RD Rolf is still really bad, he can't double or 2HKO anything until he gains a ton of levels and at best he's never anything but Shinon offensively with less durability, and Shinon is already a very superfluous unit in the long run whose only real merits beyond the first half of part 3 are that he's solid filler in part 4 without having needed much training and the Double Bow existing. There's only one Double Bow and Rolf needs to be fed a million kills over better units just to be a very slightly inferior version of what Shinon does naturally. Rolf sucks.

Growth units are only fun for me when the game gives you, like, an actual setup to expedite their growth in game that feels satisfying.

Feeding dozens of pirates to Fir in FE6 and gaining over a dozen levels in her join chapter.

Throwing a bunch of birds at Astrid in PoR.

When it's something like Wendy, Fiona, or Sophia, where not only do you not get that but the chapters they join in are actively antagonistic towards them, it just feels bad.

Caeldori's paralogue feels so satisfying for that reason. She starts out with a Swordcatcher and is already oneshotting Heroes and Sorcerers 10 levels higher than her as a base Sky Knight.

There's something about in-universe characters explaining gameplay gimmicks that always feels super hokey to me. I legitimately prefer "Ryoma will patiently wait 25 turns" over this example here.

So, you know, not a surprise. Not super impressed with Fates. This one is more tragic to me though!

I actually REALLY like the guts of Fates! I love the changes to pairup, I love the class variety, love the enormous amount of unique and niche weapons, class changing both mechanically and with the more focused options is MILES better than Awakening. In fact as far as playing the game goes (not factoring maps), its better than Awakening on all fronts. The only questionable thing for me there is that the weapon mastery situation is kind of out of line with the unique and varied weapon options for the various classes.

Also I just really, really don't like My Castle. At all.

Birthright has the most consistent, if a bit bland story. The maps are inoffensive, but nothing stands out. Its chock full of gimmicks but theyre all inoffensive, mostly just buffa and stuff to make it easier when it doesnt ready need it. It just feels like better Awakening. Kids stuff is dumb plot wise but again the mechanics are better.

Conquest crushes it mapwise. Much more interesting, gimmicks that work, not everything hits but mostly its a success. Some legit memorable winners for the series. Plot is atrocious, no way around it. Characters a lot more varied, some bad sole great, compared the the mostly stable mid quality of Birthright. The story though legitimately harms the game. I was questioning whether it was bad enough to knock the game below Birthright, and I was actually leaning there for a bit, but I decided the Birthright story being fine wasnt enough to keep it over Conquest.

I dont want to talk about Revelations.

No seriously..I went into this with the expectation that it couldnt POSSIBLY be as bad as people said, there was NOW WAY. And while it was the weakest for a good while, I started getting some mechanical hope with some decent middle chapters and a return of the replicant mechanic for a map, I thought it was turning up a bit.

But dear fucking LORD everything after that was hell. On. Earth.

This game is actively antagonistic to human decency. The devs actually hate you, they hate me, they hate life. No human being could have enjoyed this. I would rather have been at work than play some of those maps. I managed to make some of my own fun with some funky class stuff, actually got into crafting and cooking and stuff, but theres just no other way to put it: this is one of the worst games Ive ever played, forget FE.

Conquest has a shot at being my favorite FE. When I played it, I thought it really made Awakening's changes shine, such as Pair Up, weapons, skills, and class changes. Now, I think it's just alright. The calculations are a bit too much for me these days. I tried doing Conquest again with characters I didn't use my first time and it's really rough. Makes me wonder if I'm kinda "slotted" to use certain characters, especially on Hard.

Story was always a wash for me. I really only like the Jugdral games, the Tellius games, and the Fodlan games in terms of storytelling. If anything, I'll take Fates Conquest story over bland stuff like FE1 or FE2. At least it's funny and memorable.

I've been tempted to buy Revelation before the e-shop closes for good in March or whenever. The main reason I haven't is because I'm someone who found nothing redeeming in Conquest except for the music, and that's supposed to be the good one. Sounds like the only reason to do that is because Revelation and Birthright are the only main games in the series that I haven't played and I might as well complete the series.

There's a distinct possibility I regret playing it at all. I don't feel like it contributed to my opinion of Fates proper, much less my opinion on the franchise. It brought me nothing.

I would nab Birthright, though.

I think the reason it offends me so is that it represents everything wrong with how they did Fates. There's no reason to give it any props for any characters or core gameplay mechanics because all of those things are in the main two games but better there. There's is nothing Revelations adds at all other than just a raw increase in roster size.

I DREAM of a world where Fates was one linear video game. That game, assuming the story was cleaned up enough, probably sits at 5 or 6.

The Fates character ranking was a good read. It's funny, even if I don't agree with a lot of the placements, I don't necessarily disagree with the writeups. Like, I agree with what you say about Velouria, but that doesn't mean she leaves the top 15.

The only ones really standing out to me as a disagree are Ryouma, who I really do like a lot, and Xander, who I really do dislike quite a bit.

Treehouse had more than a few changes for Fates that legitimately upset me. Granted, the game came out at/near the peak of the LOCALIZATION OUTRAGE ERA, which I myself was admittedly and somewhat shamefully susceptible to - to the point that I opted to play the fan translation for Birthright instead of the official release. I've cooled down on a lot of the stuff they changed but some things like those Kana rejections and the infamous "..." support still bother me.

I'm a pretty big proponent of localizations changes when necessary, and as an example in Fates, the Soleil romance changes were very appreciated. A lot of the other changes I've heard about in Fates are head-scratchers though.

It's just silly that Kana is the only pedo-ish romance that got changed. Like why that one and none of the others???

Still ultra funny tho.

Glad you appreciated it! I definitely get disliking Xander and liking Ryouma. This was also partly based on going through every single support, particularly for the less story important characters, so the ones who had a little more variety in those benefited pretty heavily.

3DS era Treehouse was definitely getting a bit nutty. Adding doge memes to Zelda was probably the last straw, lol.

I do like some of the localization changes done in Fire Emblem games over the years. Like the conversation about the Black Knight throwing the match to Ike was really cool. It was also made up by the localization team. In Japanese, the Black Knight lost because he was just a possessed suit of armor at the time due to Warp Powder shenanigans. So this is a straight up change to the story. I've wondered for a long time if a hypothetical remake would change it back how it was in Japanese.

The localization being so bad frustrates me because I remember people thinking Tomato was so arrogant for thinking his Mother 3 translation is anywhere near Treehouse quality, only for them to go out and release this garbage. Granted, the original version of Fates was complete garbage too, but they somehow managed to take something that bad and made it worse.

Reviewing my list because I thought Echoes seemed wierd where it was, but....no, I think that's right for me.

I was not very kind to the 3DS era, lol. Even a game like Birthright which I didn't have much bad to say about and I liked the core of a lot was still an uphill climb. Just goes to show that something mid can often be less interesting than something with unique issues.

Maybe I'll need to revisit Echoes some day because I played it before I was in the groove, but I was really put off by random forced random encounters and really didn't like the dungeon crawling stuff at all, plus the maps are so lame.

Granted, I'll take those lame maps over Revelations late game hell.

The man that has somehow managed to be the main character of the game that launched the franchise in the west, yet simultaneously is the most forgotten lord in all of mainline FE.

Yay it's Eliwood, who makes you think every playthrough is the one where he'll finally be Eligood, but then he ends up being Elibad and you remember Hector is the only Lord in this game who doesn't suck and even he's nothing special

I haven't played quite all the games, but Eliwood's definitely the most boring lord from the ones I have played.

It's not gonna take much for him to surpass Roy for me.

Dude should have just STAYED in Smash Melee.

Either way is better than going full Corrin, though.
