Or ruin it like The Witcher

I'm really new to it. Watched Dark, was in love with it, went right to 1899 afterwards and loved season 1 of that, too. Loved the setting, the multicultural cast and how they interacted and couldn't interact, and it had one hell of a mystery. Similarly to Dark, I felt things were going to batshit crazy in S2 & 3. Now we'll never get to know, but at least we're getting more WITCHER.

This. Over the last decade I've wasted too much time already on series with long silent sequences of characters trying to be as vague as possible like they have some deep scheme or mysterious background going on, while in the end they're almost always just everyday people who have no idea what the fuck they're doing.

Pretty dumb move to get the people who made Dark to make a show and not at least give them two seasons to build an audience. Its not like Dark had a huge following with s1. Or you know, they could advertise their fucking shows.

There's still a chance Mindhunter might come back. It was never technically cancelled. David Fincher just couldn't stand TV work scheduling and instead of postponing the season he released the actors and crew from their contracts. He said he'd come back to it if he is able to.

I'm hoping Bo and Jantje are able to go to another network and continue 1899 that way. It's planned for only 3 seasons anyway. But time will tell with that one, no clue what their contract is.

Right? The problem here is they need so many viewers to get additional seasons since Netflix is heavy with the axe that reluctant viewers then hurt the ratings.

Make no mistake; I'm not blaming the viewers. This death spiral is just an issue if you get a reputation for being quick to cancel as Netflix has gotten. The content shuffle benefit from a lot of new shows by not holding too long onto old ones eventually starts to eat its own tail if nobody commits to watching any of their shows because they foresee it's swift demise.

Do you know what Netflix considers good or bad viewer ratings? Iirc 1899 had 80mil viewers and was charting in multiple countries and all that. I thought it did well and between that and with Dark preceding it, I didn't even consider 1899 getting the axe.

Nobody does. This is made worse by the fact that we barely have visibility of real viewership. Like a Nieslon program got instituted last year but that is still really new and really doesn't have the same value traditional TV ratings have since the primary users of Neilson ratings are advertisers, who want third-party viewership figures. Something less important for streaming services that have either no advertising or advertising with very different contracts.

So not only do we not know what Netflix bases it's decisions on (which I'm guessing involves engagement metrics beyond just volume of minutes streamed) but we really aren't even sure of what the viewership really is.

One other thing to consider, is that we are still facing some of the tail end of the industry wide production delays caused by COVID. Shows take a while to go from agreement to produce to airing on television in general. Then suddenly everything got pushed back because COVID. Finally things air years after the deal and even if it does well it's weird delayed production schedule could make filming additonal seasons tricky. And maybe one show didn't get specifically hit by the issues, but maybe Netflix had other popular shows that did so they are moving things around and reallocating resources and so the show gets screwed anyway.

All in all, the last couple of years have been serious chaos for show production and there are so so many factors that go into the renewal of even seemingly popular shows that it makes renewal decisions functionally opaque.

You REALLY got to push through those early episodes of 1899 to get anywhere with that series. You have to pretty much be sick in bed and unable to reach the remote. That's how painfully awful it is. But halfway in the show does pick up. Not a lot. And even then, there's nothing really groundbreaking in the plot. It's just another "we're stuck in a VR sim" show.

No on really knows, but we do know that Netflix started getting axe hungry with its success of Stranger Things season 1. That was the start of all these Netflix shows that barely got 1 season off getting canceled because they couldn't perform as well as Stranger Things. Basically, Stranger Things was such a success it literally equated Netflix to getting a shit ton of new subscribers, something no other Netflix show could ever replicate. Not even Squid Games (which I believe is still Netflix most viewed show, though I could be wrong) equated to more subscribers.

First 15 minutes is not enough to understand the story, you didn't even see the main point of the plot. First 15 minutes is just characters being introduced

The main point of thr show doesn't even happen i think until the end of the first episode

That is like turning on Infinity War but getting bored before Thanos gets to earth
