Blastoise was my guy.

The fake dragon-wannabe annoyed me with his 1 billion forms and his love that my favorite pokemon did not get.

Now, I have accepted it, and as a dragon enthusiast, sure, I understand why people like Charizard (the fire-breathing lizard, not dragon). While Blastoise will only be added in through updates in future titles, and Charizard gets to serve in so many vital roles (final boss pokemon of both the last game and of the anime) that does not mean I have to hate Chari-lard.

Sure, I have to see Charizard beat Blastoise in the anime through some ungodly means, but it's all good. Sure, I see Blastoise treated as a joke in the last big pokemon movie, but I'm not mad.

As far as flying lizards go (not dragon), he's a nifty guy. He's a good secondary mascot, only behind the yellow rat himself.

Dragon is kind of a broad term for a lot of different fantastical animals from different cultures. Most dragons are originally more inspired by snakes, and then combined with aspects of other animals (lions, bats) or magic.

Yeah, I feel for the Venusaur fans too. I think, at least before gen 6 started to buff Charizard by giving him two Megas, and then gen 8 gave him a form I hear ain't bad, Venusaur was the technical best of the original Kanto starters?

Could be wrong there, of course.

I'm not sure about best, but being a grass type, it had positives against the 1st 3 gym leaders you come across.

• Super effective against ground/rock
• Super effective against water
• Resists electric

In addition:

• Neutral against Erika
• Neutral against Koga
• Super effective against Giovanni
• Decent against the Elite Four

Not to mention being tankier than Charizard and without a 4X weakness, having better Special, and access to the Toxic + Leech Seed combo that was ridiculously broken in Gen 1 because the games were held together with duct tape and prayer. Could also take advantage of Grass being all special moves back then and use Growth + Razor Leaf for consistent strong hits off a base 100 stat.

I was such a cool kid I looked at the cool as shit dragon on the box art and said "I see, that's the one they want me to like. I'll be a fan of the flower dinosaur instead to spite them!"

Venusaur is probably the best Gen 1 starter because the game otherwise has shit grass options.

I still think Blastoise has it worse.

Venusaur was always the best out of the 3 competitively outside of maybe gen 6 + 7 when Mega Charizard Y existed, and even then it had a very strong mega in its own right with Thick Fat neutralizing 2 of its weaknesses + getting even more bulkier than it already was.

Charizard was bad competitively for a long while, but then it got it's Mega Charizard Y form and jumped up to being one of the best non-legendaries in the game. Charizard X was also great due to its typing + being able to utilize Dragon Dance.

Blastoise on the other hand could never take off. It was outclassed by several water types from the very beginning, and even getting Mega form didn't really do anything to help it out, unlike Venusaur + Charizard who got amazing Mega forms.

Not so much anymore since an item that ignores hazards exists now (heavy duty boots). Now it's bane is Mega evolution not being a thing anymore (outside of maybe in Showdown) in the gen 8 + 9 games

I used to be a h8r when I was a little kid bc it's so easy to kill one by just dipping its tail in water

I guess another thing going against Blastoise is that there is a million fucking Water types compared to Grass and Fire, so it has way more competition

Charizard has had a bit of a resurgence in gens 2 and 3 somewhat recently. Gen 2 Belly Drum Charizard enables offense teams, which is amazing. Gen 3 he's a a more offensive Moltres (or, rather, Moltres who has surprise offense) who has made noticeable shifts in the meta.

Like, what tournaments are happening with a gen 4, for instance?

There's Smogon Premiere League, which is a drafted league where the managers build a team of players to play in each gen's OU.
Smogon Classic where each player competes in gens 1-5 (6-8 are played in a separate tournament) and you seek to be the best of all 5 classic gens.
Then there's various, usually rotating, "unofficial" tournaments that are generally advertised on the front page of Pokemon Showdown. Pokemon Showdown also has a rotation of "spotlight" formats to draw interest, so you can actually find a battle.

Mega X and Y were awesome.

I think Charizard's lame. I loved when they added Stealth Rock and he got flushed right down the toilet for a few years.
I'm really not that invested in the franchise anymore but I still had to groan a bit when I saw him get two megas, priority over the other two in Gen 8 and lazily being used as the final hurdle for that game's final boss and now also for Ash's adventure in the show.

Venusaur was my favorite. Blastoise is pretty cool too but I'd still go with Venusaur for the status/healing options. Especially Leech Seed. I never got to try out that Chlorophyll double speed thing but that sounded fun.

I've always liked Charizard. The problem isn't Charizard. It's how hard TPC/Gamefreak like to shove Charizard down our throats and give it favoritism compared to other Pokemon, especially the other Kanto starters.
