Borrowing the Fluttershy account so I can upload an image; two more songs for now, will be back later this afternoon with the rest:

=========================================

#216: Spiriitbox - We Live in a Strange World (2:48)
https://open.spotify.com/track/4y8iYaEWA7MrMiyNFqidtR?si=217bdbbc8134439d

Nominator: BlackDra90n [?/30]

Initial Score: 52.32
Revised Score: 70.00
Final Score: 71.50

(First Reaction: I think I'll pass on writing anything here for now. I can't find anything of value that I want to say and I think this is the type of song that might click more on a different day.)

One of those songs where I'm having a hard time pinning down how I feel about it. The lyrics aren't exactly what I want, but they're not far removed from what I want either:

You let the bastards grind you down
Collapse a vein so you don't drown

Certainly not the bleakest lyric of the topic, but it's definitelly heavy and evocative. The music is also rather difficult; the song starts off so incredibly slow that it honestly bores me, but the first chorus has a rather pleasing "ocean" vibe to it. Second verse is boring again, but then the song goes HARD starting at the second chorus and I rather dig it... and then it ends really abruptly which slightly sours me on the experience. It's very much a ""love it AND hate it" song.

....Eh, let's go with 70 points, I'm feeling generous tonight and I meant it when I said I really dug everything starting at the second chorus. ...Well that's not how I put it, but whatever.

[Final Thoughts: Yeah, I think I really like this.]

#215: The Dear Hunter - A Beginning (6:19):
https://open.spotify.com/track/6qqpEU3upuqi6x8EXqaav4?si=30eb462d38934066

Nominator: NBIceman [8/22 Remaining]

Initial Score: 68.24
Revised Score: 68.46
Final Score: 60.00 [Upgraded to 62.476] [Upgraded to 64.511] [Upgraded to "something"] ["Something" set to 67.122] [67.122 reset to "something"] ["Something"" set to 71.56]

(First Reaction: Good song, but I still can't really focus on it. Hopefully, taking each song as its own thing on the second listen, I'll stop being stupid and properly appreciate the songs.

...on the plus side, I thoroughly enjoyed the album, even if it's not remotely on the level I'm meant to.)

!
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/0/7/2/AAXIRqAAEHcg.jpg

[Final Thoughts: I still like this, but I'm moving it down to the Neo Clump. There are just so many songs that I like and I'm not sure I'd actually take this over anything that's managed to be ranked above the Neo Clump.]

[Later: Of course, this meme isn't entirely accurate (nor was it meant to be):

While there was an angry lynch mob out to kill Hunter, he apparently kills himself during this track??

The boy finds Ms Leading dead in the church, so he burns it down with her inside like a funeral pyre. The pimp/priest calls the townsfolk to find the boy. Somehow the Boy gets to TPP and kills him (Casey did not elaborate on the specifics of how.) The boy then kills himself.

Which doesn't entirely come through... there was a line in the previous song about killing himself, but it was spoken of as a more <i>metaphorical</i> death instead of this "somehow he managed to murder/suicide his archenemy in the middle of a lynch mob??" scenario that apparently happens here? And after two entire albums of the Pimp Priest's manipulations, he's just kinda killed off-stage between songs?

...Alright, I guess allegedly that will be relevant in Act VI, though I'm not sure where they go. Main character, main villain, and love interest ar e all dead. This song seems pretty final: Love interest is dead, in a fit of rage he torches the villain's place of operations & kill them in a dramatic murder/suicide; as he passes away, he asks for absolution from the spirits of all those who've died.

...why is there even a <i>hypothetical</i> Act VI? And... like I know my Simpsons meme is sarcastic, but honestly, I kinda think letting the lynch mob kill him makes more sense than suicide (unless "suicide by mob justice" was the method of suicide since Casey hasn't specified a method of death)? Just speaking thematically, being burned at the stake follows from earlier events: He burned the remains of his beloved, he burned the church,, and he ends up burned to death himself by ignorant fools who would never know the truth of his story.

Also, going back to Act IV, let's not forget the crowd's demands that Hunter "love [them] all in spite of what [they'll] do to [him]". We've kinda been building up to the crowd murdering him for a while. But the crowd doesn't seem to do ANYTHING? "Love us in spite of what we'll do, which is apparently fail to stop you from murdering your enemy even when hes standing right next to us & while we're trying to kill you, you kinda have time to go off and choose your own method of dying, we're just really terrible at this whole 'murder' thing??" doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

Eh, whatever. I do like this song a bit more than the other songs trapped in the Neo Clump, so I'm going to give it a bit of a boost even if I disagree with Casey's description of what happens here.

{Slightly Later: Oh yeah, I did forget Hunter's son & neglected to think of Mr. Usher. I suppose there's still some characters left, but I'm not sure about continuing after losing both Hunter & Pimp Priest].

[Later Still: And a couple more points.]

[The Latest: I suddenly like this outro... very dramatic build and then aquatic style fade out. This drowning pleases me. I don't know what score I wish to give it, but I do not wish to eliminate it yet, so I'll just set it aside with a null value & revisit it later.]

[Later: Okay, I like this song quite a bit, but I think I'm okay with letting it drop now. We're hitting a spot where I'd say I like everything left at least as much as this.]

[Later: Or I could change my mind and put this back to a null value. I could do that too.]

[Later: Okay, officially moving this up a tier and giving it a new value.]

Six more songs to end the day, featuring double drops from Xtlm & NFUN, and writeups so short that I can coincidentally get all six into one post:

===================

#214: maximum the hormone - koi no sperma (5.57):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUeRiPyjFH4

Nominator: Xtlm [4/13 Remaining]

Initial Score: 56.17
Revised Score: 55.79
Final Score: 58.80 [Upgraded to 71.58]

(First Reaction: I don't know. The song has a fun energy and it's catchy as all hell, but I really don't want to listen to these lyrics and the mandatory metal porition of the song is rather off-putting. I guess I like the song, but wow, metal screaming "SPERM! SPERM! SPERM!" makes a pretty good case for dropping this song a few hundred placements.)

!Good energy and a fun punk pop-esque sound most of the time, but it's not the type of humor that appeals to me and the metal section is kinda... one-note and dull. Kinda the definitive example of the "I enjoy it, but..." tier.

[Final Thoughts: A surprisingly decent song considering the subject matter, but then the mandatory metal sections aren't exactly my jam... still, it is an oddly catchy little tune and I do kinda like it.

....but the question is "do I like it enough to jump up an entire tier" and that question is actually giving me pause. Because it is such a fun & addictive song that it would easily be at the 60 point level without the metal portion and I don't know how much those portions are dragging it down. I'm going to try the 58 point zone for now and revisit the song when the topic reaches that point.]

[Later: I think this song is fun enough that I actually quite like this song. Think I'm going to move this one up two tiers.[

[Later: While not exactly my first choice of lyrics, the song is incredibly catchy and became something I really enjoyed.]

#213: Deniz Akbulut - Autumn's Rise (2:51):
https://youtu.be/Vlk5UEXiGCo

Nominator: NFUN: [4/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 73.45
Revised Score: 73.82
Final Score: 71.61

(First Reaction: A song that is both fun and relaxing. It's one part "let's go explore a low-level jungle area!" song, with two parts "relaxing town theme" mixed in. The combination works better than I would have expected and I thoroughly enjoyed all the feelings inspirsed by this.)

!Could also work as a resort town theme in the less adventurous parts of the song. Quite neat and relaxing.

[Final Thoughts: Relaxing adventure is a new genre for me, but I think I like this style of song. Or at least this one specific song if nothing else.]

#212: Amy Grant - Lead Me On [Live] (4.11):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Snmy9mLtHcc

Nominator: Xtlm [3/13 Remaining]

Initial Score: 63.49
Revised Score: 72.00
Final Score: 70.00 [Upgraded to 70.213] [Upgraded to 72.00]

(First Reaction: A Christian pop song dealing with slavery & the Holocaust is certainly a unique thing to nominate. She has a powerful voice and the music is definitely my type of thing (I do love me my 80s pop & music that even sounds adjacent to that style of music), but the subject matter is a bit harsh... I kinda have to be in the right headspace to appreciate overtly Christian music or to deal with topics of genocide, which makes it tough to listen to or talk about. I really can't go off on any tangents, comedic bits, or roleplaying fantasies when there are lyrics involving people praying to God while being led into the gas chambers.

Still, I do like the song. It's well performed and I should listen to more challenging songs rather than just falling back on all my safe subjects. It's just rough trying to talk about it.)

!Great singing voice & fantastic performance. Definitely a song I have to be in the right mood for though... like, at this exact moment, I'm more open to more challenging songs and feel good with bumping this up a tier but there are also days where I'm just... not.

[Final Thoughts: [REDACTED]]

[Later: Yeah, let's just say I'm always going to have issues with religion & was not in a headspace conducive to discussing this track, so let's just delete that. This is a great song and rarely drops below the "really like" tier, even during times where personal issues make this sort of song a bit dicey.]

[Later: Moving this back up to where it came from, as I'm once again in the mood for it.]

#211: Ryuji Iuchi - Monkey Shot ~ Expert Stage (3:18):
https://youtu.be/Ey7YKwdFsHI

Nominator: NFUN: [3/31 Remaining]

Initial Stage: 72.06
Revised Stage: 72.06
Final Stage: 72.06

(First Reaction: I do love these types of space-like game songs; anything that feels like floating through space or distortional warps is great.

...obviously I got distracted and put the word stage instead of score up there, but the error amuses me and will stay.)

!I still really like space-type music such as this.

[Final Thoughts: Yep, this is the type of ambience I really like alright.]

[Later: Definitely one of hte most consistent songs of the topic. It creates an atmosphere that I really like and I always really like it, as dull as that response is.]

#210: Isekaijoucho - Billions of Lightyears of Loneliness (4:20):
https://youtu.be/gW6O1aLCbcE

Nominator: UF8 [10/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 63.00
Revised Score: 74.04
Final Score: 72.0603

(First Reaction: One of many songs in the "this does everything right and seems like something I should love, but I only like it" category. Waiting for the end of the world.)

!Another of those songs where I'm siginificantly more into it than the first time around. It's very much of one of those "does a lot of things I like" songs and I like it quite a bit for that tonight.

[Final Thoughts: I still really like this song. Just an all-around good sounding song that I enjoy.]

#209: Alice Glass - FAIR GAME (2:46):
https://open.spotify.com/track/0xcEqifa3OUHuM49wOdTRP?si=ee8a2bbad9c34908

Nominator: CPU [6*/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 63.66
Revised Score: 83.64
Final Score: 72.12

(First Reaction: Dark rave music. I like dark.)

!I'm way more into "dark rave" music than the first time around. This is great.

[Final Thoughts: It tackles the same themes of gaslighting, negging, and emotional manipulation like Dorian Electra's Gentleman & M'Lady, but the music actually leans into the dark & twisted vibes. I'm not quite in love with the song at the moment, but I still really like this; the darkness of the lyrics & music, alongside the venomous way she delivers them is intoxicating and this is a delightfully evil bop.]

[Final: A beautiful song, but I think this track falls here. It's emotional and moving, but everything that I really like has to go at some point this tier... also, I can't possibly compare this song with the one I'm also eliminating right now, so I'm just going to take the cheap way out and place them in a tie.]
Aww I'm glad you find it beautiful regardless! It works even better in context of the musical, but yeah, the composition and lyrics are strong enough to stand on their own, I feel like.

I'm sure it's a coincidence, but thank you for saying you had three songs remaining. I forgot to update something after your last song dropped (you can see the remaining song count as "?"), which was throwing off the count... saved me quite a bit of time by having the error pointed out like this.

====================

#208: Paolo Rustichelli - Med Groove (3:41):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Fis-URQTaM

Nominator: ZaziGuado [11/28 Remaining]

Initial Score: 71.013
Revised Score: 84.11
Final Score: 72.14

(First Reaction: This is a splendidly smooth groove and I thoroughly enjoy it. The song doesn't inspire any strong emotions or make me feel anything specific, but it's practically as high up the list as an instrumental I don't feel a personal connection with could be.)

!A fantastically mellow groove. I dig it.

[Final Thoughts: A delightfully charming & easy groove. Very enjoyable, though I feel like I'd want something that inspires a stronger emotional reaction of some kind to reach the next tier... still, very nice song, I quite like it.]

#207: ViANKIE - Nigoame (3:46):
https://youtu.be/U5uLx4lhKuI

Nominator: UF8 [9/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 78.094
Revised Score: 76.33
Final Score: 72.15

(First Reaction: I'm deducting two points from the score for the WUB WUBs around the 2:30 mark, but I really did love the song up until that point. Great song that I was really vibing with, so I think there's a decent chance it'll wind up going back up to the 80 point tier on repeated listens where I'm prepared for the song to do...that.)

!If anything, I'm more bothered by that part of the song than I was originally. Rest of the song is fairly great though.

[Final Thoughts: I do not get why this breakdown is part of the song and I don't think it fits with anything that happens before or afterwards. I really like the song, as always, but that bit completely pulls me out of the track.]

#206: M@D - The Concert (Seven Nation Army) (Radio Edit) [3:17]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNDbhjFEnTA

Nominator: paulg [8/52 Remaining]

Initial Score: 57.04
Revised Score: 58.03
Final Score: 58.03 [Upgraded to 60.00] [Upgraded to 72.16]

(First Reaction: I like this song, though I have a hard time pointing to any actual reason why. This really isn't one of my preferred genres and the lyrics are repetitive and mindless, but I find the song oddly enjoyable.)

!Not my genre or lyrical style at all, but it's really quite compelling. Somehow.

[Final Thoughts: Yeah, I don't get it. Thumping beat, repetitive lyrics, crowd of people with non-lyrical vocalizations, this is a song that feels like it should be competing for last place... and yet, this is a bop as the kids say & it's actually rather close to that 60 point level.]

[Later: I think I like this enough to add it to the Neo Clump.]

[Later: I.. think I may actually really like this? That feels really weird to admit because this song is actively doing everything wrong, but I... kinda really want to give it 70 points??]

Nominator: Dragon66116 [6/12 Remaining]

Initial Score: 66.19
Revised Score: 67.14
FInal Score: 72.18

(First Reaction: Lupe never fails to deliver, bringing yet another fantastic song.)

!Definitely an artist I should check out more songs from.

[Final Thoughts: No lyrics that I want to draw attention to, but Lupe Fiasco is great & I'm always glad to hear more from him.]

#204: Linkin Park - One Step Closer (2:37):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-SO2KqTxAc&list=PLSZnrWBCBT3ng1xEWEkXC91StoZjD8BP3&index=2

Nominator: Mega_Mana [13/38 Remaining[

Initial Score: 74.00
Revised Score: 80.00
Final Score: 72.19

(First Reaction: One of the angrier Linkin Park songs. I can't decide if I prefer the previous track on the album, Papercut, because it's sadder or if I prefer this track's anger. I'll just put the two songs in a tie and see what happens later.)

Let's move this song up an entire tier and say nothing of value about it. I'm really connecting with the lyrics, but they are a tad bit repetitive & the song feels too short... it's unfortunate when I'm really vibing with a song like this and it's only two and a half minutes long. Great song though.

[Final Thoughts: I still love the anger on this track, but there's not a lot of lyrical variety here and I'm not clicking with it as much as I was the second time around (or even the first, to be quite honest)... the rather abrupt ending also feels unsatisfying; I still really like it, in spite of how negative I'm sounding, but I'm not quite loving this song this time,]

[Later: A song that I always really like, which can be something that I love when I'm in certain mindsets.]

#203: Lana Del Rey - Dark But Just A Game (3:56)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_l0NeLJjL4I

Nominator: Dragon66116 [5/12 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 61.23
Final Score: 64.49 [Upgraded to 65.04] [Upgraded to 69.39] [Upgraded to 72.24]

(First Reaction: I still love her voice. I'd say I'm not super-into this song at first, but then, I don't think I've ever been super-into her songs on the first listen.... they tend to have a fairly modest initiral & revised ranking and then keep going up the charts. Or at least, that's how I recacll it happening with the last song. Either way, I like this and I'm going to add it to the CLUMP of 60 point songs for now.)

!Great voice combined with deep, rumbling tones in the background. I'm not really into the lyrics or story, but the song's doing a fair number of things I like & it's good at them, so I like this. Moving it up slightly above the exactly 60 point range.

[Final Thoughts: There's a good amount of pain and regret in this song, combined with a very familiar voice and some of the instrumentation that I'm looking for these days, so I like this quite a bit.]

[Later: Minor boost to reach 65 points.]

[Later: More substantial boost.]

[Later: And another substantial boost, raising it up a tier. As is standard with Lana Del Rey nominations.]

Nominator: NBIceman [7/22 Remaining]

Initial Score: 96.00
Revised Score: 89.00
Final Score: 72.25

(First Reaction: This song is really, really hitting me hard tonight. I'm a bit doubtful it's going to hold up by the third listen because this is a surprisingly emotional gutpunch and I'll be prepared for it next time, which will likely dull the effect a bit... still there are very, very few songs that make this strong of a first impression.)

!Emotional song, though it has indeed lost a bit of its punch since I know it's coming.

[Final Thoughts: Well, obviously I have a lot of father issues for *reasons*, so a very sentimental song from father to child is exactly the type of thing that can crush me on certain days. BUT... right now, while it is the sweetest song on the album and I do really like it, it's not inspiring any overwhelming feelings. Now that I'm prepared for the song and the story it's telling, it's lost a bit of that soul-crushing gutpunch factor that it had on day one. Still, a fairly high scoring song even at its lowest point.]

[Later: Let's just say now's not *exactly* the best moment for this subject matter...]

#201: Franchouchou - Saga Jihen (4:01):
https://open.spotify.com/track/1kpE2kwm7KZvYiLEl6R2le?si=b6e497259acf45b6

Nominator: Player_0 [8/33 Remaining]

Initial Score: 44.07
Revised Score: 53.70
Final Score: 62.00 [Upgraded to 67.03] [Upgraded to 68.163] [Upgraded to 70.0006] [Upgraded to 72.333]

(First Reaction: I'm not a fan of this '30s swinging style music. There's some fun with the lyrics reference to blood and hell that make it slightly dark & twisted in a fun way, but it's not enough to get over the fact that I just don't like this style of song in the first place.)

Now this song is reminding me of a track from one of the Disgaea games, but I can't remember enough to find it. It's a song that played at your base in 3, 4, or 5--definitely not Seraphina's unrequited love song,

*eventually thinks of searching for "Disgaea base theme" and going from there*

Disgaea 3 - Extreme Outlaw King:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbgxuaYn9Ho

The deeper voiced singer combined with a higher pitched background singers that keep repeating themselves, in a song referencing hell/the netherworld... not really similar songs, but enough base level similarities for my mind to get distracted and conflate the two.

I'd say the nominated song is a little better than I thought... I think the novelty of it is fairly interesting, it's performed reassonably well (though the "keep repeating one word" background singers can be a big grating), and I like the idea of the song & lyrics well enough. Song should fit in better with the low-to-mind 50's.

[Final Thoughts: This is actually something I like tonight. It's a pleasingly twisted romance of darkness & this style of music is starting to grow on me a bit.]

[Later: I'm actually pretty into this song right now. Going to move this up to the 67 point zone.]

[Later: Adding another point to this at the last minute.]

[Later: The energy of the choruses is rather infectious and I think I'll move this up.]

[And Later: Two more points.]

honestly fair, it's what holds it back from me from revisiting it much now too. granted it is closer to complextro than actual dubstep but still, very much prefer the rest of it too. also, this was definitely one of those ones that caught my attention due to how well it was covered than anything else. at the time in noms there was a cover from a member of VALIS that had drawn considerably more attention and it wasn't even close to as fitting. nowadays too there's also a cover from holoX's laplus that has hundreds of times more views and yeah it's also just night and day...

*checks* Not a bad cover, though I prefer the original version. The backing singers feel a bit off to me in the Hololive version.

First five [EDIT: Six; I am bad at counting] songs of the day, featuring a double drop from UF8 and the longest writeup of the topic... which I don't think references the song it was supposed to be talking about at any point.

#200: Hekina Ail - Os-Uchuujin (3:20):
https://youtu.be/nd_ivrvtAEI

Nominator: UF8 [8/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 65.11
Revised Score: 73.15
Final Score: 72.20 [Upgraded to 72.336]

(First Reaction: Did you post another cover of this song before? The lyrics seem awfully familiar... not that it matters, but sometimes my memories feel kinda scrambled and it's hard to keep track of what I actually remember & which memories are false. Either way, this is a pretty easy-for-me-to-like song: cute singer portraying a character with a non-human nickname (even if she's probably not literally an alien), yes, we know what I like.)

!Well, now this song doesn't seem familiar at all--not just other versions of this track, but this version itself doesn't seem familiar at all... but I seem to enjoy it more than I did, which is also confusing. This song is confusing.

[Final Thoughts: The end of the song repeats "sonna anata no koto ga suki" a bit too much (using it for 7/9 of the last lines is not my favorite idea), but I still really like it.]

[Later: Minor boost for organization.]

#199: Leslie Cheung - [I wish...] (3:54):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgUrbuq-RoI

Nominator: Handsomeboy [10/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 57.53
Revised Score: 66.37
Final Score: 63.24 [Upgraded to 66.37] [Upgraded to 69.227] [Upgraded to 70.045] [Upgraded to 71.06] [Upgraded to 71.174] [Upgraded to 71.52] [Upgraded to 72.147] [Upgraded to 72.337]

(First Reaction: I suppose "May we all be Blessed with Longevity " or something would be a bit more accurate translation for the title, but I've grown attached to my inaccurately abridged tversion, so I'm stubbornly going to use it until forced to enter a more appropriate name.

I like the lyrics about being alone and gazing at the stars, but considering the current state of society, I'm not sure I'd really wish for humanity to last as long as the stars without changing...).

!There's a haunting beauty to his voice on this track that I didn't properly appreciate the first time. The lyrics about humanity are a bit too hopeful and optimistic for my blood, but a pretty song by someone I enjoy listening to should easily get to the mid-60's range even if the lyrical content is a bit of a miss.

[Final Thoughts: Not a lot to add. I like him and I like the pain in his voice on this track, showing a different side of him compared to some of the other tracks of his that havve been nominated.]

[Later: Not sure why this one got moved down, so I'm just going to move it back up.]

[Later: A few extra points for the power of his voice.]

[Later: I really like his performance on this track, so I'm going to go ahead and add this to the next tier as well.]

[Later: Adding one more point to this song.]

[Later: Reorganization.]

[Later: Okay, so there are a few different ways things can be translated which completely redefine the song, And of particular note, I can't find whatever translation I was going with in the first place and none of the translations I'm looking at now are particularly similar to it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkbSJGdlQlM

(Different singer, but there's a good translation in the first comment)

The moon should bear no grudge,
But why does it tend to be full when people are apart?
People may have sorrow or joy, be near or far apart,
The moon may be dim or bright, wax or wane.
This has been going on since the beginning of time.
May we all be blessed with longevity
Though we are not together, let's enjoy the moon's beauty.

Which is

1: Quite poetic

2: Has absolutely nothing to do with whatever translation the First Reaction was referencing.

There's also an alternate translation here, which twists it into a more romantic song:

https://tben.wordpress.com/2014/12/07/lyrics-of-%E4%BD%86%E6%84%BF%E4%BA%BA%E9%95%BF%E4%B9%85-wishing-we-last-forever/

But why must the moon be full when we are parted?
[...]
I wish that that we will meet forever
For we share the moon even when miles apart

The first translation speaks to humanity in general, while this one feels like it's more directed towards one specific person... though this translator admits they're have a limited knowledge of Chinese and are using the first translation as a base, so it's likely they're taking some liberties. And either way, this again is not even remotely like what I read at the start--even the translations that wish longevity for humanity have absolutely no reference towards being as unchanging as the stars. So that's fun.

Either way, I'll be adding a bit more to this score. Mostly for the pain and longing in his voice, but also slightly because these translations are much more appealing. Dancing with your shadow in the pale moonlight is very pleasing & I do like lyrics about the beauty of the night.]

[Later: Adding a bit more to this to reach 72 points.]

[Later: Editing for reorganization purposes.]

(First Reaction: [A long, unrelated tangent has been moved to the end of the writeup and buried under spoiler text so that no one need bother reading it. We now return you to your regulardly scheduled writeup, already in progress:]

Aaaanywho..., this is a pretty nice traveling adventure song. People grow, mature, find renewed love for each other. All very nice. I like the female singer (Joanna Gleason), the person playing Baker feels like he's not quite as good, though he's certainly fine. Just a generally nice song that is enjoyable to listen to.

[Unrelated tangent below: I actually had to pause this song part way through as I got distracted with flashbacks to the attoricious third Chipmunks live-action film, Chipwrecked. There are definitely many, many better examples of "characters get lost or stranded somewhere and have to discover new aspects of themselves to survive", but apparently my dysfunctional mind is broken in a way that it relates everything to the Chipmunks.

And it wasn't even a good film! Even by Chipmunks standards, Chipwrecked is barely watchable. Basically the Chipmunks & Chipettes get stranded on a deserted island. The brainy male character (Simon) either eats something weird or gets infected or something and goes crazy, becoming a debonair & romantic adventurer. This makes him the troublemaker of the group and basically takes over Alvin's role; his female counterpart/love interest (Jeanette) gets injured and doesn't really contribute to anything, but Simon keeps talking about how beautiful she is, so she replaces Brittany as the beautiful character.

Blah blah blah, Alvin is forced to become responsible and learns that he can keep things in control when he has to & Brittany has to become the smart one, realizing that she's smarter than she knew and can be more than a pretty face. Simon doesn't really learn anything since his character development is spurred by insanity or whatever and I imagine Jeanette is probably going to have to deal with all sorts of problems--how do you deal with learning that you loved a loved one more when he was taken over by a different personality? How could the relationship ever go back to what it was before?? The answer is shut the fuck up and stop pretending any of this matters, but there's a serious furry relationship drama waiting to be told in the aftermath of this stupid film, and I feel people should know that.

...okay, no one should have to know that, but I've come too far to stop typing now! Err...where was I...

...oh right, right, right. You'll notice that only four of the six Chipmunks & Chipettes are mentioned in those paragraphs. Theodore & Eleanor might as well not even exist in the film, a point that the movie directly points out. Their caretaker/sorta-father-figure Dave is out searching for the kids, along with actor David Cross (technically reprising his role from the previous film as Ethan Hawke, I believe his name was; but there's no reason for him to be in the film at all that it might as well have been David Cross playing himself--Lord knows he hates the series and can't be bothered to actually act in it anyway,,,)

....what was I saying? Right, so Dave is talking to bored-as-fuck actor David Cross about what he imagines the Chipmunks are up to without him, juxtaposed with what's actually happening. He worries about Alvin, but Alvin's actually mature and doing well; he expects Simon to be smart, but Simon's brain damaged or whatever. And before Dave can even imagine what Theodore is doing, David Cross cuts him off--"I could barely pretend to care about the first two." (Line may not be exact, I'm certainly not rewatching the entire film just to get the direct quote).

The film has an actor--who does not want to be in the film--directly state that he can't even be bothered to pretend to care about what might be happening to the side characters. And since the side characters contribute fucking nothing to the film, it's not even really a joke! You can feel the utter contempt the scriptwriters have to even be working on the film. It is the only memorable scene in the entire thing and a rare moment of honesty--no one involved in this, from the writers to the actors, care even in the slightest.

And the damn film is still so much better than the fourth one! Do not get me started on Road Chip. 'Ooh, let's just write The Chipettes out of the film entirely and fuck it, let's basically just ditch everyone except Alvin, we didn't want to write scenes for the other two anyway, OoOoOhHhhHHHhH~!'

.........I was supposed to be talking about a song, wasn't I?
)

!...After a couple months at this "only able to type one or two sentences" limitation, it is particularly jarring to look back upon the time when I had full use of my wrists & used my typing ability on that. Song is good; not quite something I like enough for the 60 point level, but definitely in the high 50's which is nothing to sneeze at.

[Final Thoughts: Song is good, whatever, I have a completely unrelated rage-filled tangent to finish. Spoilers for the live-action Chipmunk films because that's WHAT WE ARE DOING WITH OUR LIVES NOW.

Alright, you know what, I don't care about the crippling pain I will suffer from typing these deranged paragraphs. I don't even care that I don't remember the film clearly enough to have a valid opinion anymore. The Road Chip is absolute fucking garbage and I will literally destroy myself dying on this hill.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alvin_and_the_Chipmunks:_The_Road_Chip

The film grossed $234 million worldwide against a $90 million budget and received generally negative reviews from critics, although it was considered a slight improvement over its predecessor.

BY WHO? Give me the names of these vile abominations that dare be wrong about the ranking order of the live-action Chipmunk films! (The correct order is Squeakquel > the first film > Chipwrecked > Road Chip. I will accept people ranking Chipwrecked over the original because it has the Chipettes, even if the film and soundtrack are garbage.)

I... seriously, just look at some of this Road Chip nonsense:

The Chipmunks drug three squirrels and dress them up in their clothes to fool their hard-of-seeing neighbor Ms. Price, who was asked to look after them. The Chipmunks travel on a plane, but Theodore lets out a monkey, which then lets out several animals which cause an emergency landing and frustrates unscrupulous Air Marshal James Suggs, who is revealed to resent the Chipmunks because his girlfriend dumped him on Christmas for being so into them at the time, effectively eliminating his shot of becoming an FBI agent, so he puts them on the No Fly List

The film is pain. The description of the film is also pain. It is misery and suffering all the way down.

Any~way, forget that. I'll forgive the plot being trash. I'll forgive the lack of continuity (Dave has a new girlfriend and there's not even a throwaway line about what happened to his old love interest [in so far as I can recall; I'm not rewatching this], but she never had a personality or reason to exist in the series to begin with). What I will not forgive is Dave basically abandoning the Chipettes.

The short version: While Dave never officially adopted the Chipmunks or the Chipettes, he clearly takes on a father figure role in all of their lives. The actor playing Dave, Jason Lee, clearly never gave a fuck about any of the characters or in making the slightest effort towards his acting (though he was less... openly antagonistic towards the franchise as David Cross, if only barely) -BUT- his character takes on a caregiver role. All the animal characters are clearly children--the exact age is ambiguous as they're often treated as very young & needing constant babysitters, but also went to high school so ????--and Dave letting the Chipettes move in to his house at the end of the Squeakquel was... well, it was meant to be sweet, hypothetically.

But the Chipettes are written out of Road Chip with a throw away line about them being judges on American Idol. There's no goodbye, no acknowledgement of Dave's role in his lives, or anything. They're just gone. This is a group of orphaned children that he took in and they just vanish from his life off-camera before the film even begins! And at no point does Dave show even the slightest interest in what's happening to them. Not in a "Jason Lee is a talentless hack who lacks enough imagination to work with CGI characters" way where he's incapable of showing affection to his adopted children, that is just something you have to deal with if you're going to watch any of the quadrilogy, but in a "the script literally does not give the slightest fuck about any of this way".

And yes, the Chipettes are also children. There's a big deal at the end of Road Chip with Dave legally adopting the Chipmunks. If they're young enough to be adopted, and the Chipettes are in the same grade as them, that means the girls are young enough too. And he just... let them go. Off-camera. I'm bitter beause they wrote the Chipettes out of the film, yes ; I'm also bitter for how half-assed the write-off was ; but I'm also actually angry at how the script effectively just has Dave abandon them. Even if he hadn't adopted them, they were living with him. If you're the only adult caring for a group of orphans, you don't let them move all the way across the country without ever checking in on them, Dave. You fucking ass.

Do I have unresolved parental issues? Yes, clearly. But Dave is still a fucking ass as of this movie's opening sequence and the whole stupid film can fuck off.

....Anyhow, you nominated a song! Good for you!]

[A few hours later: No, I'm not done attacking Road Chip yet.

I can understand them writing off the Chipettes because there's just too many characters to deal with. Writing for three singing animals is difficult, writing for six is probably a nightmare--especially when forced to work within the constraints of a live-action movie. So... I still wouldn't be happy about removing them, but I get it.

Also, having them live with the Chipmunks does create the unfortunate scenario where they are simultaneously love interests and siblings. So getting them away from Dave to avoid the incest implications, fine. I'm disappointed that you are removing the best characters/singers in the series, but I at least get the idea of why the writers would want to do something. What angers me is the half-assed and lazy way they do it, the complete lack of emotion from Dave, and the way the entire thing is a slap in a face to the story they were even *trying* to tell.

LAZY: The best you could come up with is they work on American Idol? That's it? Putting aside that American Idol wasn't exactly in its prime when the movie came out making this a dead-end career move for the girls, there's also no reason given (that I am aware of) that Dave couldn't move to keep the family together. Again, they're kids and you are their caretaker, Dave. When they have to move across the country, you could just go with them?

And why are they written off off-camera? And why is Dave incapable of showing the slightest bit of care towards them? It would be so easy to just open the film with them moving out for their careers. Have Dave say goodbye, have him promise to come help if they need anything, and establish that the fuckwad at least *hypothetically* cares about what happens to them. It's still lazy, but taking five minutes to show that the characters care about each other would at least be SOMETHING.

Unrelated Sidenote Inside Of An Unrelated Sidenote: Also, this stupid film opens with the Chipmunks throwing a going away party for Dave/celebration of the Chipettes moving on with their careers. While they're already gone. If your children are throwing million dollar parties in honor of people who aren't around, it's probably a sign they're not handling their absence very well, Dave. It's almost like completely abandoning half your children is having an effect on the leftovers you *allegedly* care about, Dave, you utterly emotionless fuckwad.

STORY: Alright, so the actual plot of this dreck. The Chipmunks think Dave is going to marry a single mother; her child is a bully that hates the Chipmunks, so bully (whose named I can't be bothered to remember and shall now be called Bully) & Alvin eam-up to destroy Dave/Mother's relationship. Blah blah blah, eventually the kids all learn their issues are with parental abandonment. Bully's father left him at an early age, the Chipmunks are worried Dave will leave them, and IN THEORY we reflect on how traumatic parental abandonment is to children--even abandonment that only exists in their imaginations.

(The movie is absolute trash and fails at everything, but let's just pretend the writers were able to make the point they seemed to be trying to)

And yeah, abandonment really sucks. SURE BE HORRIBLE IF THE MAIN CHARACTER ABANDONED CHILDREN, RIGHT? WOW, JUST LOOK HOW TRAUMATIC IT IS FOR THE OTHER CHILDREN TO EVEN THINK ABOUT THAT HAPPENING TO THEM. YEP, GOOD THING YOU DIDN'T JUST DITCH SEVERAL CHILDREN YOU DIDN'T CARE ABOUT, RIGHT, DAVE? BOY, IT SURE WOULD BE HORRIBLE IF THAT TRAUMA WE BUILT THIS ENTIRE MOVIE AROUND WERE INFLICTED ON A GROUP OF GIRLS BECAUSE NO ONE GAVE A SHIT ABOUT THEM, RIGHT?

...okay, I think I'm actually done this time.]

[Later: (still not actually talking about Chipmunks, because of course she isn't)

Wait, wait, wait, wait, Jason Lee was Syndrome in The Incredibles? You're telling me this man can actually voice act when he wants? Considering how terrible he was as the voice of Underdog, I just assumed he wasn't any good at voice acting. Huh. So perhaps a talented director can get a good performance out of him. ...I don't know how to process this. I thought Underdog was bad in part because he couldn't do the job correctly (no shame; not all actors can shift to voice-acting roles, nor should they. It's a different job), but apparently he could do the job correctly and just didn't. I do not know if this is his fault or the director's.

...or it could just be because Jason Lee's voice does not fit a talking dog superhero anyway. And since he did the narration for the film as well, it made the entire film feel like "My Name is Earl" only furry & created by people who were on pretty much all of the drugs.

(I am making Underdog's live-action film sound much better than it actually was)

....Anyway, so, Jason Lee. Is he a decent actor? Like, anyone actually watch much of My Name Is Earl or any of his other roles where he is a human intreracting with other humans? I know a lot of people loved that show, but is it a case of "it is a good show that just happens to have Jason Lee in it" or is he... like... talented? I'm trying to work out exactly how much I should hate him for his performance and how much is just the film series itself being terrible, which would absolve him from some of the blame.

"Raetsel takes her father issues out on Jason Lee for literally no reason" will continue after this message from our sponsors

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUa5AFVxKZM

We now return you to whatever this nonsense is

Did I ever point out that Jason Lee wasn't really in Squeakquel? Dave gets injured very early on and is replaced by... I don't know or care, actually, but he was so much better than Jason Lee. He at least seemed to be trying to act alongside his imginary co-stars unlike Jason Lee. FACT: Squeakquel was the best Chipmunks film & it was all the better because Jason Lee wasn't there.

Why, oh why, did we have to bring him back for the third and fourth films? ...Probably because no one remembers who not-Dave was. I can't name the actor or the character. Or anything he actually did in the film other than fart. Which is somehow still better than Jason Lee managed in the three Chipmunks films he was in.

...AAAANYWHO, let's go ahead and move this song up to the next tier. I like it.]

[Later: I'm starting to really like this song. I'm... skeptical that it'll ever have a writeup about the actual song, but I do like it! Enough to move it up another tier at least. Incidentally, this is the obviously the other song that's competing with that Playing Pool in Outer Space song for longest writeup. And yeah, I'm pretty sure this one holds the title! Which is something!

{Well, it's a bit hard to be sure which is longer without copying them into a program that will count & properly determine it, but this one is definitely longer if you discount that Playing Pool had an entirely unrelated writeup copied & pasted in full--this is entirely new... "content"? Feels too incoherent to count as content, but I lack a better term for it.}

(My Mega Man song ranking actually gave points based on how long I'd ramble during each writeup, which would have propelled this song to the top of the charts! I don't do that anymore because it was stupid, but in another timeline this incoherent rambling would have had a tangible effect on things. And then we'd wind up in an infinite loop where talking about getting extra points for talking about extra points was itself giving extra points. But we don't live in that universe.)]

#197: Spiritbox - The Summit (3:57):

Nominator: BlackDra90n [2/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 76.00
Revised Score: 73.04
Final Score: 72.46

(First Reaction: Clean vocals, darker yet more subdued instruments, and lyrics that I naturally gravitate to--"the venom is what keeps me alive" is a good example of that type of 'depressive, but not "let's kill ourselves" soul-crushing misery' lyric that I look for. A very well done song.)

[Final Thoughts: Another song where the main writeup section was completely blank. USUALLY there's a note when we did that intentionally, so the silence here may have been accidental... hard to say, considering how many were deliberately left blank.

Aaanywho, the song does seem to repeat the chorus a bit more often than I might like... but I'm particularly fond of the "The venom is what keeps me alive" lyric from said chorus, so that's hardly a dealbreaker. And while I know the song has literally nothing to do with the Marvel character Venom, I'm having some fun intentionally misreading the lyric to have my fun picturing any of the female symbiote users swinging around the city while this song plays. I make my own fun.]

#196: Neil Diamond - Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show (3:31):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pCxPNuokfM

Nominator: Dragon66116 [4/12 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 69.40
Final Score: 72.4902

(First Reaction: A song that I'm sure I've heard several times growing up, but never actually paid any attention to until now. The first verse feels incredibly familiar, but the rest of the song isn't ringing any specific bells (other than a general "yes, this is Neil Diamond, alright") so I'm obviously not that familiar with it. And I've spent a lot of time getting sidetracked reading articles about this song, as no one seems to agree if this song was written to make fun of evangelical preachers or to honor them:

Wikipedia believes it's a celebration:

Some evangelical groups in the American South encouraged the boycotting of this song and of Diamond as they thought that this song denigrated and insulted evangelists and the evangelical movement. When Diamond explained in an interview that it was, contrary to their understanding of it, a celebration of Gospel music and the evangelical style of preaching and worship, the controversy subsided.

While other articles feel that Neil was lying about that:

https://shebloggedbynight.com/2012/the-laughing-devil-in-his-sneer-brother-loves-travelling-salvation-show/

Neils original concept for BLTSS was to skewer evangelical preachers who he felt were phonies, and they were taking those people, really taking them. This must have shown through a little, as Diamond faced a potential boycott in 1969 from offended Southern evangelicals. Afterward, Neil began to mention in interviews that he had attended service in a Harlem church and changed his mind, deciding the preachers offered hope and were in reality doing something positive for all those people. With no changes to the song itself, he switched its meaning from pointed satire to celebration, which makes one question just how pointed the originally-intended satire was to begin with.

Though, ultimately, it doesn't really matter; as that article admits, if it was satire, the fact that it can be reframed as a tribute without changing a single word means that it's not exactly a hard hitting critique even if it were trying to be one. And with Neil's penchant for changing stories and saying the exact opposite of things at varying times, trying to work out what he meant by anything is an utter fool's errand. Would that I have learned that lesson an hour ago and actually made progress on the ranking itself instead of this unhelpful tangent... ah well.

(Also, I find it midly interesting that the evangelical community would come after this song which has only nice things to say, while Phil Collins/Genesis' "Jesus He Knows Me" was briefly hailed as Phil finding Jesus... while the song blatantly features the Preacher scamming everyone & cheating on his wife with a girlfriend and another man.

...and let's not even get into how "One Toke Over the Line" was declared a modern spiritual.)

Right, right, Brother Love--the song, not the wrestling manager--it's good? Neil Diamond has a way of perfectly setting a scene and the spoken sermon is non-objectionable. But I've spent way, way too long on this one song so I'm going to just drop it into the CLUMP of 60 point songs and revisit it another day.)

!Neil Diamond is someone I could stand to listen to more of, he's got a great voice & I don't think I've ever disliked any of his bigger hits. This song is pretty neat, don't have anything else to add since this is one of the only "first reactions" that actually said anything.

[Final Thoughts: I really like this.]

[Later:
saying the exact opposite of things at varying times, trying to work out what [they] meant by anything is an utter fool's errand

Nominator: UF8 [7/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 50.13
Revised Score: 63.00
Final Score: 62.04 [Upgraded to 62.764] [Upgraded to 64.08] [Upgraded to 70.12] [Upgraded to 70.869] [Upgraded to 72.335] [Upgraded to 72.53]

(First Reaction: Nice, but relatively forgettable song that I don't think stood out in any particular respects. It's fine and I suppose I'd say I liked it (I certainly didn't not like it), but... ehhhhhh.... )

Ooh, I like this song today. It's got this "modern pop song" energy that I'm suddenly into. It's catchy and he has this oddly approachable vibe to his performance... like he's talented, but not so famous that he can't connect with his fans on an individual level. Like he's just generally a nice person, you know?

...Okay, I don't really get that either, but I choose to believe he's a good person and hope not to learn anything to the contrary. The point is this is a nice, fun song that I enjoy and--while there aren't any particular moments I want to highlight as being great--it's just an enjoyable, easy listen from start to finish.

[Final Thoughts: Standard "I like this" response.]

[Later: It does have a pleasingly nice vibe to his voice, so I'm going to give this a *minor* boost... not an entire point, but enough that it moves up a few places.]

[Later: A bit more of a boost to reach 64 points. I do find his performance oddly pleasing these days.]

[Later: And now I really like him!]

[Later: Moving this up someways.]

[Later: And up to 72 points as well.]

[Later: And another kinda small-ish boost for a bit.]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTczCpIaLAU

Nominator: ZaziGuado [10/28 Remaining]

Initial Score: 66.278
Revised Score: 70.0004
Final Score: 72.6894

(First Reaction: Isn't this a remix from the dancing game rather than the original P4? This feels a lot snazzier than it did last time I played through Persona 4... not that it really matters.)

!Snazziest song in the topic, giving it a few extra points to move it up a tier.

[Final Thoughts: I'm still not sure if you meant to post the Persona 4 Dancing remix or not, but I prefer this version anyway. It doesn't bring to mind anything specific, but it's incredibly stylish and cool, so I really like it. Pretty neat sax playing here as well, which is always a plus.]

====================

-definitely an improvement over the original song-

#193: Souls of Mischief - 93 'Til Infinity [Music Video Version] (3:35):
https://youtu.be/fXJc2NYwHjw

Nominator: Mega_Mana [12/38 Remaining[

Initial Score: 56.64
Revised Score: 57.09
Final Score: 60.00 [[Upgraded to 61.00000004] [Upgraded to 61.78] [Upgraded to 62.135] [Upgraded to 64.327] [Upgraded to 66.327] [Upgraded to 68.47] [Upgraded to 72.69]

(First Reaction: The chill vibe is quite nice and it does the job of being a very tame & easy rap song to get into, but I don't find any aspect of the song especially gripping. Without a real hook or a lyric to get fixated on, it's just nice--something I feel positive towards, but not positive enough to really glomp onto.)

!I really enjoy the backing track on this song & the general vibe, but the chorus basically just repeats one line over and over & I still can't find any particular lyrics that I'm especially drawn to. It's a good song and I like it, but... yeah.

[Final Thoughts: It's arguably worth noting that this the music video version of the song that was nominated is slightly abridged and cuts out a minute thirteen from the full song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBz___JDeog

Though that link censors the word bitch, so it's also not exactly complete either... but the sound quality on any uncensored link I can find is inferior, soo... shrug emoji?

Oddly, I don't have a real opinion on the extra verse that was removed. It's fine? I don't mind listening to it, but I don't think the song is any worse without it. Its existence or non-existence has no tangible effect on anything.

Aaaanywho...., the backing track on this song is so great that I'm going to go ahead and move this up to the "like" tier.

[Later: Chill enough for an extra point to get above the Clump, I suppose.]

[Later: Minor boost to the higher end of the 61 point zone.]

[Later: Very minor boost to reach 62 points.]

[Later: And two extra points to get it into the top half.]

[Later: Moving on up, two points at a time.

Also, while it doesn't have any impact on anything, I'm not as into this particular pool table. There's never a good look at it, as someone's always bopping around in front of the camera and obstructing the view. It also has a very subdued color palette so the table doesn't really "pop" on camera during its brief appearances. I appreciate using the video to keep the joke going, but in terms of "pool table video quality" this might be the lowest scoring of pool tables thus far?]

[Later: ...Sure, two more points. One of these days I need to either eliminate this or give it a more substantial increase, but for now, two points again.]

[Later: Okay, now I feel like giving this a substantial boost into the next tier.]

============================

-the pool table was probably a coincidence, but I am obligated to comment on it anyway-

Nominator: @TunnelScene [8/27 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 73.19
Final Score: 72.71

(First Reaction: I'm not entirely sure why I like this.

*five minutes later*

I still can't think of anything to add here.)

!There's a stronger emotional connection I feel with this song than usual for her music, making this easily one of her best songs & a standout that I really like. I'm still not entirely positive why it's so much stronger, but I suppose I don't need to know why..

[Final Thoughts: Definitely one of the hardest hitting tracks I've heard from her, even if I can't really explain the connection I'm feeling towards it.]

[Later: I am trying to find something here, but I don't really have anything. It feels like her voice is more powerful and resonant here, but that could just be my imagination and I can't find any specific aspect or lyric I'm drawn to. It's one of those where I really like it and lack anything more concrete to say than "really like".]

Final Score: 55.0000002 [Upgraded to 55.03] [Upgraded to 60.00] [Upgraded to 63.7002] [Upgraded to 65.531] [Upgraded to 72.84]

(First Reaction:

From an interview:

"[Take Your Medicine] is not about antidepressants, but about the more general experience of facing the sources of one's depression and adjusting brain chemistry without medication:"

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/6/9/4/AAXIRqAAEH12.jpg

Jokes aside, I do generally like the song and its message--perhaps I'm more willing to listen to this message than i was with certain other songs dealing with similar topics--but I could really live without the "We found beautiful babies sleeping in our ribs" refrain.)

!Metaphorical medicine and memes about it aside, I like the soft and subdued sound of the song.

[Final Thoughts: It's a good song with a generally good message (i'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and not accuse him of criticizing people that do need medication), but some of the metaphors aren't really clicking with me and I'm enjoying most of the "Kinda Like" tier a bit more than this. Though it is a good song.]

[Later: Minor boost so that I don't have another bunch of tied songs.]

[Later: And a very substantial boost to the 60 point Neo Clump. I like this tonight.]

[Later: I think I feel like adding a few extra points to this.]

[Still Later: And a couple more points.]

[Later: And a very substantial increase to the next tier. I find myself really liking this one as of late.]

her character actually is an "uchuujin denpa idol vtuber" so yeah alien etc, it was indeed one of the ones i shared in the post-ranking last time (you can probably tell by now that i rushed the heck out of nominating stuff considering i didn't check stuff like this). Still honestly probably the actual perfect character to cover the song from the denpa onna anime, especially with her unique voice traits (she actually inhaled helium to achieve that both for songs and streams, honestly mental)

speaking of perfect people to cover various songs, takamasa's rumor cover was probably another thing i already shared since it has extremely stood out to me among covers of said song for quite a long while now. sadly he's never gotten many fans despite his clear talent, though i also like to believe it isn't because he's an unapproachable person otherwise. he's just not super active and i think maybe somewhat depressed usually from what i remember of his rare fanbox posts

I absolutely meant to post the dancing remix, though I'm surprised I opted for that version and not my favorite version of the track:

This version leans into the jazz influences and gives different instruments their own solos. Honestly that entire album this remix is from is cool as hell.

I wouldn't say he is criticizing people who need medication. The singer, and band as a whole, are very holistic in their approach to life so it makes sense to me that he would direct his efforts to combating depression and whatnot by using the power of the mind. I find the song encouraging, like trying to inspire you to take control of your own mental being and avoid self-pity and wallowing in the sadness of everything. I can use that in tandem with the medicine I'm on.

I'll add it to the post topic list; I know I should probably listen to it now while the other version is clearer in my mind, but I suspect it's a different style than anything else that's been added and will likely be a breath of fresh air while going through all the other new songs.

And that's definitely fair! I'm far more into wallowing at the moment, but I appreciate how much songs like this help other people & I do really like it. It's definitely one of the higher scoring inspirational songs.

Huh, I just assumed she was using some program to alter her voice. That is impressive! And, like I've said, I don't mind repeat songs--that one was just confusing me because some days the lyrics seemed incredibly familiar and other times they didn't, so I couldn't tell if I'd heard it already or not.

(Especially at a topic like this one that asked for so many songs from people... I'm honestly amazed anyone took the time to find so many songs and would be hard pressed to select two hours worth of music.)

Song added to post-topic list.

Well, it could have been worse. I could have actually gone into my father issues instead of taking it out on Jason Lee, which at least had the potential to be humorous. (If it's any consolation typing all that up did help me realize some things that I've been suppressing which is probably good?)

And I wouldn't suggest watching any of them, unless you already had a heavy bias in favor of the Chipmunks (which you don't or you'd already have watched them); I will say Squeakquel's soundtrack is easily the best Chipmunk album, but that's only of interest if you wanted to hear Chipmunk music in the first place. They're not objectively good, but they have a special place in my heart anyway.

Two songs to start the day:

====================

#190: Celine Dion - Its All Coming Back to Me Now (7:36):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsWG2Gry1fw

Nominator: rwlh [7/24 Remaining]

Initial Score: 59.93
Revised Score: 65.33
Final Score: 72.999

(First Reaction: Personally, I prefer the duet between Marion Raven & Meat Loaf. This is a great song no matter who performs it, but there's pain and tragedy in Meat Loaf's voice that I don't really get from Celine Dion.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IgIiZo9AGs

On an unrelated note, I keep typo'ing Meat Loaf's name... thus far I've called him "Meta Loaf" twice and "Metal Loaf" once and honestly, if there isn't someone doing metal remixes of Meat Loaf songs under that name, then I don't know what humanity is doing as a species.)

!I was a bit too harsh on this song for not being the version I wanted to hear. While I'll always prefer the other version, this one's still pretty great and a classic pop ballad for a reason.

[Final Thoughts: I wish all of "Bat Out of Hell III" were available on Spotify. Having to go to YouTube to listen to the album is mildly annoying... though again, I'm talking about the version of hte song that wasn't nominated.

Her performance is hitting me harder than usual this afternoon. I've always liked the lyrics, but this time I'm also able to get into her performance of the lyrics, which is something I was definitely missing the first two times.]

#189: Air - You Make It Easy (4:02):
https://youtu.be/DGm6ts8yQWM

Nominator: Metalmind [13/25 Remaining]

Initial Score: 67.18
Revised Score: 68.18
Final Score: 70.01 [Upgraded to something] [Something set to 73.00]

(First Reaction: Hey, it's what I considered the second best song from this album when it came up on Rank the Tracks! Apparently. I don't really remember it, wasn't much a fan of this album. Didn't strongly dislike it, but I ranked the album at 16/25, so... kinda around the middle of the list.

Actually, I rather like this specific song from the album at least. It's a simple, relaxing love song that I'm rather close to resonating with. Just being held and understood by someone... it's a nice thought, isn't it?)

!A good song. Very mellow and relaxing with pleasing lyrics... I like it; not quite enough to say "I really like this" and jump it up a tier, but it's definitely on the higher end of the "I like this" tier group.

[Final Thoughts: Adding a few extra points to move this into the really like tier, regardless of what the Revised Score section said. What can I say,,sometimes I'm a sucker for songs about being held.]

[Later: So sweet that I don't want to eliminate this yet... moving this aside for a while.]

[Later: Definitely the sweet and comforting lyrics that I like when I want something sweet & comforting. A very nice song and one that's better than I gave it credit for when ranking the album.]

Last eight songs of the day, divided into three posts as I underestimated how large some of the writeups were:

==================

#188: Taylor Swift - this is me trying (3:15):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bdLTPNrlEg

Nominator: Dragon66116 [3/12 Remaining]

Initial Score: 70.00
Revised Score: 73.99
FInal Score: 70.84 [Upgraded to 73.06]

(First Reaction: Taylor Swift is another of those artists that is consistently a treat to see nominated. This track brings the level of sorrow and regret that I'm into these days, along with a bit of hope in that she's at least trying. It's nice.)

!"It's hard to be at a party when I feel like an open wound" is another good example of the type of pain that I'm attached to in lyrics these days.

[Final Thoughts: Artist I like singing lyrics I like in a style I like. Easy way to the 70 points tier.]

[Later: A few more points. Not quite at the Revised Score level, but much closer to it.]

#187: zts - Going my subway -get used- (6:29):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mttuqJyJBy0

Nominator: DoctorJimmy [4/24 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 73.00
Final Score: 73.12

(First Reaction: I really have no explanation for why this is getting added to the CLUMP, but apparently it is.)

!I really like this. I continue to not have an explanation for why.

[Final Thoughts : This song is... bright and happy, but in a way that pleases me instead of damning it to a sub-60 point score like most things that are described as bright.]

============================

==============================

#186: April March - Chick Habit (2:09):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjCl0DRsKHU

Nominator: Snake [9/32 Remaining]

Initial Score: 73.42 [upgraded to 80.00]
Revised Score: 73.42
Final Score: 73.13

(First Reaction: Everything about this is wonderful. From her voice, to the clever way she translated the song into English, to the hilarity of the second verse, to how the song is so delightfully catchy and charming that I actually don't mind the repetition (it probably helps that the song's barely over two minutes long). Simply wonderful all around.

...and with a writeup like that, I think I'm going to go ahead and bump this song up a whole tier. If you get that level of praise and don't even reach the 80 point tier, what hope does any other song have?)

!Clever and fun, but I think Past Raetsel was a bit hasty jumping this song up an entire tier... going to move it back down where it started and see how it feels against other songs at that level.

[Final Thoughts: Original link died. I think this is the closest version remaining; the full version of the song includes the French verses as well, while this upload seems to fade out at around the same time as the nominated version did... so close enough? Probably. Either way, I really like this song.

(I could use the version with French lyrics if I felt it was an improvement, but I don't have a strong enough opinion for or against making the switch to do so)]

#185: Motoaki Takenouchi - COLLAPSED DISCIPLINE ~ Type H [5:38]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvGrlZd4ClU

Nominator: @TunnelScene [7/27 Remaining]

Initial Score: 50.30
Revised Score: 60.00
Final Score: 73.00 [Upgraded to 73.14]

(First Reaction: On the one paw this is probably the most unique song in the entire topic and I have to give it a lot of credit for that. On the other, the most pronounced effect is this methodical "tapping" back-and-forth between each ear, like someone holding a microphone against your ear and then tapping it for a loud burst of noise, then switching ears and repeating it, over and over.. It's weird and uncomfortable, but more in a "this is kinda painful, please stop doing that" way than a fun sort of uncomfortable. What's sad is that I think I liked the song playing underneath the tapping, which was very aquatic and interesting.

This is the type of song that could wind up just about anywhere... but I'm leaning slightly towards the like column for novelty, even if I kinda have a headache and need a break after listening to it.)

Eh, let's go ahead and boot this up an entire tier. I wish the back-and-forth tapping were removed from this song, but "exploring an alien ocean and then everything explodes and you die, why did you crash into the ocean anyway, you know there's water on Earth right???" is certainly an experience and I'm giving 60 points to E-X-P-E-R-I-E-N-C-E's, and no I don't know why I wrote experiences differently all three times.

...also conveniently I was planning on taking a break and eating dinner after ranking this song, which works brilliantly because I always need a break after all the tap-tap-tapping against the thing that can charitably be called my "brain" that this song does.

[Final Thoughts: It's amusing for me to see which state of mind I was in during certain writeups... I almost never make a conscious decision between saying hand, paw, or hoof & just go with what feels natural to me at the time.

[At topics like these where I'm explictly not restraining myself, that is. I try to keep that sort of thing contained to somewhat appropriate venues.]

Anyway, I'm actually quite pleased by the bubbly nature of this track tonight. It is nicely aquatic in ways that I enjoy and the tapping seems inconsequential to me tonight.... I wonder if I'm more sensitive to this sort of sound during some of the furrier headspaces? Probably not, but it's hard to say.]

[Later: There's definitely a very alien feel to this track; I know I did reference this as being an "alien ocean", but I don't think I ever quite drew enough attention to how alien it truly feels. I really like this. Minor boost for reorganization purposes.]

Honestly, I want to leave the writeup there.

*almost falls asleep while trying to think of the next sentence*

Okay, trying to "think" isn't exactly working, so I guess we just go for some stream of consciousness gibberish for a while. No going back or thinking ahead, just typing. TYPING MODE, ACTIVATE!

*curls up into a ball and goes to sleep, meow*

...Fine...but I'm at least going to turn on some totally unrelated background music as a distraction.

[Currently Listening To: Rod Stewart - My Heart Can't Tell Me No]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtNKowPiB2w

Fun Fact: The song lyric is "My heart can't tell <i>you</i> no" and I'm not sure why the title is wrong? Wikipedia just says it was incorrectly called that on some releases, but I would have expected Sir Roderick Stewart's people to put forth the effort to know what the song's title was. And if that's not the title, then why hasn't it been corrected on the official YouTube channel or anything? For being an "incorrect" title, they certainly seem to insist on using it at every possibly opportunity.

(...This is not a writeup in which I start talking about unrelated songs to fill space; though the end results certainly appear to be identical...)

APOCALLIPSIS

....

http://mountaincomics.com/comic/five-part-special-part-1/

Aaanywho..., the issue is that there's no telling what I'm going to find inspirational and what's going to irk me instead. I can definitely enjoy inspirational messages from any source, but sometimes I find it in the strangest places. The most motivational comic I've ever read was an SMBC comic about how terrible the author is at inspiring people:

https://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/motivation-3

Can't tell you why. Perhaps the self-deprecating irony softens the message; perhaps my tendency to gravitate to blunt messages leaves me drawn to the pure directness of the message. Who knows?

I also find a certain other song in this ranking to be inspirational, but I won't say the name yet... I'll tell you that it's the dumbest possible selection for inspiration and I imagine some people can predict the song from that piece of information, but I won't confirm or deny anything yet.

But also, sometimes sincere & honest attempts at optimism and motivation work too! Like The Beatles' "Here Comes The Sun"! I love that song! I tend to hate the light and this type of optimism, but it radiates so much joy that I unironically love it. So it's not as though "I only like optimism when it's ironic" or "my mind is so fundamentally broken that I can only find inspiration in things that no one else ever could". There's just no telling how I'll react to a song like the nominated one until directly confronted with it.

In this case, I find myself mildly bothered by the happiness. I have no issues with it being delivered by zombies (honestly a fictional band is probably one of the better ways to get my attention), but it's just... not working for me. I find the song's attempt at motivation to be more eye-rolling than anything else and while it's a fine pop song, I don't see it being anything better than fine.

[Final Thoughts: "Cute optimism" is something I have to be in the mood for. Conveniently enough, I am in the mood for it as of the time this is being typed up.]

[Later: This pleases me. Take another 8 points.]

[Later: I also find a certain other song in this ranking to be inspirational, but I won't say the name yet... I'll tell you that it's the dumbest possible selection for inspiration and I imagine some people can predict the song from that piece of information, but I won't confirm or deny anything yet.

Obviously that was written when this song was going to be eliminated before Surfin' Bird, but this received a lot of extra points and Surfin' Bird didn't, so now that makes no sense. ...I mean, even more so than usual.

Anyway, I'm giving this song one more point.]

[Later: *sighs* This is adorable enough that I have to give it a lot of points, isn't it?]

Nominator: NBIceman [6/22 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 67.44
Final Score: 73.20

(First Reaction:

After sending his wife and child away from the City, Hunter once again visits an opium den and begins to hallucinate.

*faceplant*

The timing of this song is just... so absurd. We go from him making a deal with a (probably metaphorical) devil to take down the Priest, to an emotionally powerful song of him sending his wife & infant away in hopes of protecting them, to "fuck it, I'mma just gonna hit up this opium den and come back to the plot in a few minutes".

...in context of The Boy always making the wrong decision, I guess it works, but this... like two tracks ago (The Haves Have Naught) got me really interested to see where the story was going, it was followed by probably their most emotionally powerful song in Light, and then we literally throw everything away to fuck around at an opium den for a five minute interlude that has good lyrics & music but completely drives the train off the rails. And I can't figure out how I feel about this because I know I do like this song, but I want to give it a ridiculously low score and complain about it because I'm not ready to give points to this.

....fine, take exactly 60 points, go be in that clump of tied songs for now. I'll probably have a more reasonable take on this song when it's judged entirely on its own merits instead of interrupting the story.)

(First Reaction: It's not a particular fun type of obsession to explore and the lyrics are a bit on the redundant side, but the song is a pleasantly awkward mix of new techniques & incredibly old fashioned that is enjoyable. Definitely a group I'd like to hear more from, even if this particular track doesn't get an especially great score.)

This song is so superior to the songs that were ranked around it originally that I think I'm going to go wild and add 30 points to its score & jump it up several tiers! Ah, what a wondrous song. Combining old and new into a genre unlike anything else nominated, along with a wonderful dose of pain and craziness. Marvelous performances by everyone on this track.

...actually, let's raise the score again and go to 90 points.

[Final Thoughts: That is a massive increase in score between the first and second listen. I do really like this, but again, I think I may have overcorrected a bit... or a lot. When you're going through a large number of songs you don't feel strongly about & find something you really enjoy, you feel as though you love it because it's just that far above everything else you've been listening to all week.]

#181: Linkin Park - Crawling (3:28):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kb49V5bAERc&list=PLSZnrWBCBT3ng1xEWEkXC91StoZjD8BP3&index=5

Nominator: Mega_Mana [11/38 Remaining[

Initial Score: 73.87
Revised Score: 77.46
Final Score: 73.60

(First Reaction: Hey, it's the infamous meme song! Thanks to all the memeing, it's a bit hard for CRAWLING IN MY SKIN to elicit anything other than laughter these days, which makes it a bit hard to really connect with the song... still, it's a group I like and the lyrics are the type of thing I'd like if they weren't reduced to a joke over the years, so I do like it a fair amount.

Also, for better or worse, a song that inspires laughter (however unintentionally so) does prevent the album from becoming too serious. [I should probably clarify that I'm not laughing at the song, exactly, but all the memories that it brings back.])

I remember pretty much everyone making fun of this song when it came out. I didn't know anything about the band or the song, but I still knew the chorus by heart because it was practically omnipresent. I also recall a "Linkin Park Lyrics Generator" that would almost always give you the line "My pants are like my soul, they are black" which I still quote to this day.

Either way, I should have been intrigued by the lyrics, but considering the endless ridicule the song & band were subjected to, I kinda knew to stay far away from the song. I didn't really listen to music much at all anyway and I really didn't need to subject myself to the endless bullying that would come from listening to something like this. I'm rather glad things have calmed down over the decades... that a song like this can be nominated and that I'm actually *allowed* to listen to it is something that would have been completely unthinkable at one point.

So, this song has a lot of baggage attached to it. Memories of old friends, old hangouts, secret shames, so many rather cruel jokes... for being a song that I never really listened to, it is inexorably tied to a specific time & place. I cannot separate the flashbacks from the song enough to judge the song fairly; I'm not convinced I can judge the song at all. Still... it's definitely got lyrics I enjoy and it's nice to finally be able to listen to it. I'd question how past me would have reacted to the song, but it's an irrelevant question, as there's absolutely no way they could have listened to it in the first place. *shrugs* Still, neat that we live in a timeline that allows this conversation to occur.

[Final Thoughts: I really like it and its lyrics, but the memories make it hard to judge it based on any criteria.]

Half day today; I really need to get in at least two listens to the album from this week's "Rank the Tracks" today if I'm going to rank it, so that's taking priority. There'll also be a half day on February 1st.

For now, five songs featuring a double drop from Jesse's nominations:

==========================================

#180: Yumekawa Kanau - IDSMILE (3:02):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SUKz70bsFo

Nominator: UF8 [6/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 66.195
Revised Score: 90.00
Final Score: 73.68

(First Reaction: I like this song, but even at only three minutes long it feels like it's been almost arbitrarily extended to reach a minimum song length. I know it isn't repetitive at all, but with the short verses & seemingly rather simple nature of the song, it feels like you could cut half the song off and not really miss out on much.

...which is overly harsh considering the decent score it has & this feels like the type of song that'll wind up moving up a tier later, but I'm going to stick with that as the first reaction.)

!...I'm being too generous with 90+ points this time around, but this song's emotions are stabbing me in the heart and I wish to surround this song with other hard-hitting tracks and see how it compares.

[Final Thoughts:

I dress up with all the things I love
Thats right, as always
This is an identity Ill never yield

It's not the most complicated verse, but there is something there... this song can resonate with me quite strongly, some days. Unfortunately, I'm not quite feeling it strongly enough to keep it up at the highest tier, but I do really like this and can love it when I'm in certain headspaces.]

#179: A.A. Bondy - The Twist (4:19):
https://open.spotify.com/track/1B9kOwznNIsfhU2ljSbskk?si=y5yXH-ngSzCT4P5oJU5l7A

Nominator: Jesse Custer [9/29 Remaining]

Initial Score: 73.60
Revised Score: 73.70
Final Score: 73.707

(First Reaction: I'm not going to pretend I understand any of these metaphors, but the song has darkness and I don't need context to know this song is doing a lot that I really enjoy.)

!Still nothing relevant to add here. Song goes completely over my head, but the dark & somber vibe with references to suicide and ghosts is definitely something that appeals to me quite a bit.

[Final Thoughts: ...Nope, still don't get this song, but really dig the vibes it gives.]

#178: Counting Crows - Miami (5:01:
https://open.spotify.com/track/7GDgfn9D2NjtSgc9IH1w3Q?si=i2ByfwtgR_SJuLq1cbusKA

Nominator: Jesse Custer [8/29 Remaining]

Initial Score: 62.00
Revised Score: 96.47
Final Score: 73.78

(First Reaction: "Too dumb to save" sums things up rather well, I think.)

!I may be adding too many songs to the highest tier, but whatever. I'm in love with that line right now and want to put the song in the high 90's, so I will.

[Final Thoughts:

She don't receive my calls
Says I'm too dumb to
Too dumb to fight
Too dumb to save

I do love those lines and this is a pretty good song and it has a really good, early 2000's pop sound... but while I really like the song, I do think I was being a bit hasty adding so many songs to the highest tier & have moved it back down a ways. Still reasonably far above where it started though.]

[Later: The quoted lyrics are up there as some of my absolute favorites from the topic, but the song doesn't really lean into that type of misery as much as I'd like.]

[EDIT: And yes, I know this version of the song is the uncensored version. I do prefer the line trailing off as just "I'm too dumb to..." because "too dumb to fuck" doesn't quite work for my purposes, but it's not really something worth getting a censored link for.]

Nominator: Player_0 [6/33 Remaining]

Initial Score: 64.00
Revised Score: 80.00
Final Score: 73.872

(First Reaction: If you think I can be easily manipulated by fictional characters singing tributes to their loved ones, you'd be right.)

!I am way too easily manipulated. It's cute and simple, but in a way that I connect with... at the moment, anyway.

[Final Thoughts: Particularly the lyrics to the dubbed version of the song:

Every moment I had with you filled my heart with the deepest of emotions
Through all my tears and all my fears
You held me near

I've mentioned that I can be easily manipulated by lines about being held, yes? These lyrics push some very specific buttons of mine... I'm still having trouble deciding exactly how many points I want to give this, but I think this is vaguely between the first two scores and somewhere in the "really like" zone.]

[Later: Yeah, let's just say that songs about fathers are *probably* not what you want my thoughts on at this exact moment. Emotions are still spiking a bit.

...also, like 99% of the lyrics aren't relevant, but my reaction to this song tonight was to quote Keith Urban's line "Take your memories, I don't need 'em" from "You'll Think Of Me":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuqLjkX-fTo

Far too blatantly about the end of a romantic relationship to work for anything I need right now, but that one specific lyric is perfect.]

#176: Dorian Electra, Sega Bodega - Barbie Boy (2:48):
https://open.spotify.com/track/4De1jeFZD6rnQ6USCrh6jT?si=9e7ca3c1fea649fa

Nominator: Bane [9*/38 Remaining]

Initial Score: 70.00
Revised Score: 70.00
Final Score: 72.48 [Upgraded to 73.90]

(First Reaction: Surprisingly catchy for something that repeats itself so often. While the song is enjoyable enough that it would probably get into the 60 point zone on its own, it's elevated several placements by the inclusion of the bridge:

Plastic is perfect but plastic will melt in the sun
You keep me and use me and throw me away when you're done
You say that you need me but treat me like I'm just a toy
But till then you know that I will be your Barbie boy

Adding layers of dysfunction to the relationship and allowing a few intrepretations. While you can read it as a fairly generic 'obsessed with someone' type line, I find a lot of self-loathing contained here; the character knows that the other person is no good and will destroy them, but it's all they deserve in the first place. That depressive vibe (which could very well just me my pessimism distorting things, as it usually does) is enough that I'm going to jump this an entire tier and place it with the ever-growing Extractly 70 Point songs. They're starting to form a bit of a Clump themselves at this point...)

!That bridge is doing a *LOT* of heavy lifting for this song. I was surprised such a repetitive song had gotten such a high score, but that section--brief as it is--is good enough to keep the song where it is.

[Final Thoughts: I really like this one.]

[Later: An extra point and a half for now.]

==============================

#175: Kerry Elllis - I'm Not That Girl (3:47):
https://youtu.be/l09gX5pKxd0

Nominator: Snake [8/32 Remaining]

Initial Score: 73.93
Revised Score: 73.93
Final Score: 73.93

(First Reaction: A very good rendition of what might be the best song from Wicked. If this was my first time hearing these lyrics, this would probably be in the running for first place ; unfortunately, I kinda listened to Idina Menzel's version more than a few times a couple years ago, so my emotional reaction is a bit dulled from what it once was. Fantastic song that still makes it a bit emotional, but not the grandiose first place contender it once would have been.)

!It's odd that this song has nothing in common with Golden, but I honestly can't decide which track I prefer... I couldn't when they were nominated and I still can't.

[Final Thoughts: A great song, but it doesn't quite distinguish itself from Idina Menzel's version strongly enough to escape the feeling that I've listened to this song enough for a while.]

[Later: Golden was eventually moved up, though this song has stayed where it was from the beginning. Very consistent track.]

#174: Ashton Mills (Mod Slippers) - Chaos of Corruption (from RuneScape 3) (1:32):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5BI6V_cZRs

Nominator: rwlh [6/24 Remaining]

Initial Score: 70.00
Revised Score: 74.00
Final Score: 74.00

(First Reaction: I'm not as into high-chaos songs as I used to be and the song's a bit too short, but i do like the feeling of having my mind consumed by C'thulu-esque monstronsities, so this is fun.)

!Sometimes it's nice to spend a minute or two being consumed by the void of madness.

[Final Thoughts: I do like being obliterated by monstrosities beyond the comprehension of you humans.]

#173: Hisayoshi Ogura - NET WORK [2:01]:

Nominator: TunnelScene [6/27 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 65.70
Final Score: 70.20506 [Upgraded to 71.26] [Upgraded to 74.11]

(First Reaction: Short, but the choir-like vocals here are the type of non-lyric vocalizations that I find pleasing and I feel like adding this song to the Clump.)

!I'm surprised this song was only in the clump because this type of "BWOOMING" floating through space ambience is typically something I love. While I'm not quite as into it enough to move it up a whole tier, I'd say it's several points better than the exactly 60 point songs & is a good example of things I love.

[Final Thoughts: Ohh, this type of bwooming space ambiance is very much something I really like. Moving this up a tier.]

[Later: Adding one more point to this score. There aren't a lot of nominations that give me these sort of tones, so this is a fun experience that I really like.]

[Later: Good meditation type song. Adding a few more points.]

Yeah, the really experimental stuff isn't a guaranteed high score, but I still really appreciate getting them. At the very least, they're always a nice change of pace and there are still some that I wind up really liking, like that one.

Seven more songs to end the day. No double drops, but there is a second song from Snake for a total of 2 today, so kinda-sorta a double elimination (just a delayed one):

-

==============================

#172: All Them Witches - The Marriage of Coyote Woman (5:49):
https://youtu.be/09RbGsUkRIc

Nominator: Snake [7/32 Remaining]

Initial Score: 90.00
Revised Score: 86.16
Final Score: 74.22

(First Reaction: I did not know I needed more slow blues in my life, but I want this song plugged into my veins and apparently that is worth exactly 90 points??)

!Another great song, I really love the vibe and instrumentation here (and his voice is pretty good too), but like most high-scoring songs I find that I'm just not vibing as strongly with it the second time around; still great, still really high up on the list, but maybe not Top 10 any longer.

[Final Thoughts: From love, to kinda love, to really like... the song is nice and I love the atmosphere it creates, but the lyrics are a bit repetitive & the song feels a bit long as a result. That's not a terrible thing because I do love the atmosphere and it's kinda nice to just give the track room to breathe & enjoy the ambiance.]

#171: DEMONDICE - (Intro) Good Morning, America & American Saikoro (3:39):
https://open.spotify.com/track/1IQaREtDNIQ8eMjrrnPCwd?si=aa3ff3b169b94b6d

Nominator: Murphiroth [4/32 Remaining]

Initial Score: 52.08
Revised Score: 52.08
Final Score: 74.221

(First Reaction: It's a fine song (especially with the Intro added to it), but there aren't any specific lyrics or moments that really stand out. I originally had both songs separated and below the 50 point mark, but I do kinda enjoy having them together--the intro does its job of setting the scene and hyping me up for the actual song, even if said actual song is possibly the lowest scoring on the entire album.)

The track is definitely a lot catchier than expected. The chorus is probably permanently stuck in my head and that should probably be worth bonus points, but I'm not finding any lyrics I really enjoy or much reason to take this song over anything she's done besides "Hellbento". Giving the song the spoken word intro does help a bit (I'm still a sucker for those), but not really enough I'm afraid.

[Final Thoughts: Oh yeah, I really like this. Not sure how it was so low on the list the first two times around, but I got really excited when I saw it was time to listen to this again and had the chorus stuck in my head instantly.]

#170: Dorian Electra - Gentleman (1:42):
https://open.spotify.com/track/5stwYWdRRFmLQ25IbX8kK1?si=da776c228c0742bd

Nominator: Bane [8*/38 Remaining]

Initial Score: 50.80
Revised Score: 52.34
Final Score: 53.06 [Upgraded to 60.00] [Upgraded to 60.579] ]Upgraded to 65.33] [Upgraded to 70.087] [Upgraded to 72.156] [Upgraded to 74.16] [Upgraded to 74.225]

(First Reaction: The second verse is great and twisted in a very pleasing way:

I pick you up
I put you down
I say the perfect thing then I make you spin around
Yeah, I'm lightin' you up

Gaslighting, emotional manipulation, it makes the subject of the song into a fun, twisted, manipulator. But the rest of the song lets it down; the chorus repeats too many times and the song holds itself back to make sure you know this guy is lame--it's "the lighter side of neckbeards" and the sound is intentionally lame & weak; it works thematically, but something that's intentionally kinda lame is still kinda lame.)

It's a bit catchier than I gave it credit for, but still feels a bit more tame than I'd like and I mean that in a few different ways: The instruments are weaker (though it is intentional) than I care for and the villainy is too downplayed to be much fun, resulting in the rare song where I actively wish it went harder. It's also really short... in theory, because it's meant to be paired with M'Lady, but that track would only drag this one down even further.

[Final Thoughts: It's a decent concept for a song, but it's a bit too short and M'Lady fails to capitalize on this song's strengths. There's a few good lines, but like with the last place song, it's hard to pull off intentionally lame in a masterful way & this song doesn't fully stick the landing.]

[Later: Okay, that Elvish Knight with a fedora look from the opening of the video really works for me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JM1Of_OBUjw

I still don't like pairing the song with M'Lady as the video does, but this is actually making me enjoy this song considerably more than I did before. And... yeah, I think I do actually like this song now. Or I've been manipulated into thinking I like it by the video. Don't really care which.]

[Later: The video is probably helping the score more than it should, but I'm still moving this a bit above the Clump.]

[Later: ...Yeah, that look works way too well for me.]

[Later:

...emotional manipulation...

I think I do actually like this song now. Or I've been manipulated into thinking I like it by the video

Well played, Electra. Well played.]

[Later: That's twice I've done the Leonardo Leonardo impression & once I mentioned Jack Donaghy LARPing... I seem to be spending a lot of time this topic doing Alec Baldwin impressions. I'm not sure what to make of that.

Anyway, take a couple more points.]

[Later: And a couple more.]

[Later: One last, mini boost for reorganization.]

!Short and sweet. Neat.

[Final Thoughts:

"La-la-la, " you sang to me
"Baby, don't you cry

And lay with me tonight."

It's very sweet and cute, though I'm slightly less drawn to the song than usual this evening.]

[Later: I suppose I like this enough to add it to the Neo Clump.]

[Later: I'm not the biggest fan of Weezer, but I don't have anything against the band & those lines are doing a lot...I think I'll also move this one above the Neo Clump.

[Softly Later: I am easily manipulated by that sort of thing... putting this back to its Initiat Score.]

[Later: I'm not sure I want to move this song up an entire tier, but I want it to be much closer to the 70 point barrier than it has been in the past.]

[Later: Adding a lot of points this time because this type of sentiment is what I want at this exact moment.]

(First Reaction: Yep, this is definitely the type of thing I like. Classic 70s music that I haven't heard before, making it nostalgic & new at the same time; sad lyrics, but not overwhelmingly so ; and a little sax playing. Neat.)

!Yep, I rather like this one.

Revised Score: 73.79
Final Score: 73.79 [Upgraded to 74.12] [Upgraded to 74.275] [Upgraded to 74.30]

(First Reaction: The rare food related song that is actually really good! It's adorable, well performed, and does a wonderful job of introducing both singers' characters. Well done.)

!Very fun song, I've been looking forward to hearing this one again for quite a while.

[Final Thoughts: Hilariously cute and dark. I've actually considered moving this one even further up the list, but as funny as it is, I don't know that the song itself is great enough that I want to listen to it on an endless loop... I do really, really like it but it feels like a bit below that "kinda love" tier.]

[Later: Funny and cute enough that I'm adding a minor boost to reorganize things.]

[Later: Minor boost to reorganize this portion of the list.]

[Moments Later: Slightly more substantial reorganization boost. It's adorable and there are a lot of fun moments in the video, but I think the character interaction and video are contributing a lot to the song... probably wouldn't be as far up if I were to ever take a hardline "only judging on music" stance.]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bOhZ4xWLvk&list=PLSZnrWBCBT3ng1xEWEkXC91StoZjD8BP3&index=12

Nominator: Mega_Mana [10/38 Remaining[

Initial Score: 67.32
Revised Score: 82.06
Final Score: 74.69

(First Reaction: The first verse is fantastic and bleak in the best possible way (everything falls apart, everything has to end, we're out of time)... but the second verse is a bit too much relationship drama-y instead of existential crisis-y, which pulls me out of it a bit. I still enjoy it a good amount, but it never comes close to hitting the highs of the first verse for the rest of the song.)

This song features a lot of the pain and despair that I look to this band for. Living a lie until everything is destroyed... quite appropriate, I'd say. Even if the song does feel like its a bit too "relationship-y", there's a lot in this song that can hit me pretty hard when I'm willing to let it. It's almost exactly the type of thing I'm looking for.

]Final Thoughts: Another song that I moved up a bit too far because it was too good for the tier it was on & seemed so much better as a result of what it was being directly compared to. Now... I think an average of the two scores should work out. This is one of the album's more restrained songs, going more for "sadness & resignation to the inevitable" instead of anger. The result is rather pleasing and the story it tells can resonate on some days; I really like this song, I just don't know that I'd say I kinda love it.]

I was really confused how you managed to get different translations. Turns out they are two entirely separate songs sharing the same name!

The song you found was based on an old Chinese poem. It expresses loneliness from being separated from his family but he is sure they will meet again one day (analogy is how the moon waxes and wanes) and wishes them well. So it isnt originally about romance, though the modern song can be interpreted that way.

As for the one I nominated I cant actually find any good interpretation. I would say its more someone close to you rather than humanity in general, and keeping memories of them alive. Which is pretty sad considering how the singer died.

Ah. That would explain things... usually I'm much more careful to try & avoid that issue. With the vtubers, if I manage to find anything about a song with the same name, I try to get a romaji version of the lyrics so I can make sure the nominated track is actually a cover of whatever I found... I should remember to always be that diligent.

[Of course, I got a neat educational lesson about the incorrect song & more information about the correct song, so not being thorough has kinda paid off actually. I'll try not to take the wrong lesson from this.]

Thank you very much for the info on both songs! The nominated song in particular seems far more emotional than whatever I'd managed to find the first time I tried to get lyrics.

I haven't listened to the song in a while (and commenting from work before I forget completely) and it definitely deals with a second person, but I never thought of it romantically. I thought about family especially parents, teachers and people trying to 'bring out the best' in you or anyone that has a passive-aggressive relationship with you. I definitely remember a stint like fifteen years back where the focus of someone pushing me away was a cousin who was making things in our relationship much worse with his attempts at being social. I'm shaking right now remembering my birthday and our trip into the city.

That's fair. I'd never try to claim my interpretations as correct (or grounded in any type of reality), it's just the feeling I got from it.

Five songs to start the day:

============================

#165: dave rodgers - Deja Vu (Classical Version) (4:13):
https://open.spotify.com/track/7aA7bCsLTvrMWM9Vmz71MK?si=610d3d760769408c

Nominator: CPU [5/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 55.20
Revised Score: 55.04
Final Score: 53.22 [Upgraded to 55.20] [Upgraded to 58.65] [Upgraded to 62.499] [Upgraded to 65.033] [Upgraded to 72.13] [Upgraded to 74.70]

(First Reaction: It's nice. "It's so hard when I try to be me" feels really close to the lyrics I love, but I'm not fully jiving with it tonight.)

I prefer the ridiculously over-the-top nature of the original version, which manages to be "fast pulsing dance music done right" in a very charming way... this slowed down, classical version is certainly a different take on the song, but I don't know that it entirely worked out.

[FInal Thoughts: I'm just not clicking with this track. It's too subdued and quiet, which keeps the lyrics from having much of an impact. It's like I know the lyrics are on point and the instrumentation is objectively good, but it's lacking enough of a punch to really push it to the next level. The instrumental outro is also way too pretty for the song's general vibe. It's still.... almost something I like, I suppose, but it's still a bit of a misfire tonally.]

[Later: Actually, I do enjoy this more than any of the songs that I'm actually eliminating at the 53 point level... going to move this back up to its Initial Score, see if it fits in better with that group.]

[Later: Adding a few extra points.]

[Later: Let's take this up a tier.[

[Later: A few extra points.]

[Later: The lyrics are fantastic, but I think this is as far as I want to take the song itself, I'm afraid.]

[Later: And officially uneliminated because that's a thing I can do.]

[Later: A couple extra points before this gets re-eliminated.]

#164: Leslie Cheung - (Sleepless Night) (3:21):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5swgE3w98s

https://open.spotify.com/track/0hR5eUCbX4FZnYeMXWiD2W?si=520752106ad5491e

Nominator: Handsomeboy [8/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 64.31
Revised Score: 74.37
Final Score: 74.37 [Upgraded to 74.702]

(First Reaction: A nice, 80's pop song with lyrics that hit the sweet spot no matter how you translate them. I actially found two translations for this song, a literal translation & a more figurative one, and I actually like both versions. Compare the more professional "Not in the mood to sleep, a battle in my mind" to the more literal "No sleep. Brain in war."

And there's something wonderful about the literal version, where the slightly broken speech makes the lyric so much more relatable.)

!This feels like a fantastic song, but the audio quality on the link feels a bit lacking... but it turns out there's a high quality version on Spotify and the song feels much clearer & more powerful. It's enough of an improvement that I'm adding 10 points and moving the song up a tier.

[Final Thoughts: Always nice to hear more from him. I really like this track.]

[Later: Minor organizational boost.]

============================

#163: Keisuke Ito, Yasuhiro Kawagoe, Noriko Murakami - Sheer Mountain Range (5:20):
https://youtu.be/YeFFdqwrx6c

Nominator: Haste [2/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 46.84
Revised Score: 58.64
Final Score: 75.00

(First Reaction: A classic "call to adventure" type song, but not a call I really want to answer. Let it go to cosmic voicemail, if the adventure is important, they'll leave a message. Or find a more adventurous animal to take care of it, which works for me. *goes back to sleep*)

A fun hiking song! I wouldn't say it makes me want to climb a mountain, but I would like to walk part of a trail while listening to it! It's exciting and motivating in a very approachable, low-impact way. Very "walking for beginners" and I like the sound of that. Apparently I'm more easily excited and less lazy this evening. This is an interesting contrast that would be well worth studying, but I'm afraid I don't quite feel strongly enough about this song to bounce it all the way to the highest tiers... honestly, I'm not even sure I want to move it all the way to the 60 point range yet; if it makes me feel this... bouncy again on a third listen, then I'll move it up further.

[Final Thoughts: Ooh, this song still really makes me want to run around on all fours and bark at things@ Also, apparently we use at symbols instead of exclamation points@ And also we refer to ourselves in plural, which is a thing we are doing, yes@

This is apparently a thing that is worth 75 points.]

[Later: ...I don't know which of us wrote that and I'm not having that type of reaction now, but I'll keep the score where it is anyway.]

#162: Utashiro Amane - Matsuyoi no Hana (4:11):
https://youtu.be/iwmbSqWARn0

Nominator: UF8 [5/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 54.43
Revised Score: 53.37
Final Score: 54.20 [Upgraded to 54.805] [Upgraded to 55.00] [Upgraded to 55.00000003] [Upgraded to 56.49] [Upgraded to 63.72] [Upgraded to 65.239] [Upgraded to 70.037] [Upgraded to 70.791] [Upgraded to 75.12]

(First Reaction: Another of those "generally nice songs that doesn't inspire much of a reaction" type songs.)

The lyrics do paint what should be an interesting story:

The border with the world is approaching

Came back
A village that no one knows

Confined room
Remove the old lock

Float and disappear
The image of the city and the face of someone

The sound of bells rings in the village
To meet the unmixed illusion

But I never feel as invested in that story as I should. Like, it's fine and sounds intriguing enough, but I'm not especially interested in where the story goes. The song itself inspires the same type of feelings: Interesting enough, but dot dot dot question mark.

[Final Thoughts: I kinda stand by the first reaction, as short and pointless as the reaction is. It's a fine song and I have positive feelings towards it, but it feels like it's a slight step below the 55 point tier.]

[Later; I find his voice strangely pleasing this afternoon... giving this a bit of a boost.]

[L;ater: Hmm... yes, yes, I am growing to like him a bit more. Minor boost to get above the wall.]

[l-at-er: More substantial boost as I continue liking his voice a bit more each time.]

[La ' Tor: I'm starting to like him now.]

[L @ er : And a couple more points. I'm finding his voice oddly pleasing these days.]

[L at the ER: I don't know why I'm so into him, especially in comparison to a year ago where I actively felt nothing. Still, I guess I really like this now?]

[Later, after having run out of ways to corrupt the word "Later": Adding a bit more to this song's score as I am oddly drawn to him.]

[l473r, after going back to 1337 translators: Is it weird that I recognize this song mostly for its link containing WAR in all caps? Also like that it follows it with n0, like "just say N0 to WAR!".

...anyway, here's a few more points. I don't know why I'm starting to grow obsessed with his voice, but that's just where we are now.]

#161; Alex Winston - Velvet Elvis (3:25):

Nominator: ZaziGuado [6/28 Remaining]

Initial Score: 58.31
Revised Score: 58.31
Final Score: 58.31 [Upgraded to 68.71] [Upgraded to 69.48] [Upgraded to 70.287] [Upgraded to 75.287]

(First Reaction: Somehow, I'm surprised there are multiple songs about being in love with a picture of Elvis. Not judging, just felt like an oddly specific thing.)

!"You don't breathe, so you can't leave" is such a twisted lyric for such a lighthearted song. Fairly neat.

[Final Thoughts: Not really my first choice of thing to obsess over, but it's a fun song and she has a unique style that helps her stand out.]

[Later" And suddenly I like this a lot more than any of the first three times. Funny how that works.[

[Later: Very minor boost for now.]

[Later, that same day: I still don't want to eliminate this, so I guess I'll move this up a tier.]

[Later: Five more points! Everything's going up tonight... think it's been an hour since I heard a song that I was fine eliminating...]

And the last five, featuring a double drop from Raka:

============================

#160: RENT (Original Broadway Cast) - Light My Candle (4:05):
https://open.spotify.com/track/3kHXHXj4pUkRdIdMCtg2sL?si=4f7136c4c17346d3

Nominator: @Raka_Putra [14/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 52.00
Revised Score: 60.00
FInal Score: 63.70 [Upgraded to 63.879] [Upgraded to 68.16] [Upgraded to 69.16] [Upgraded to 71.19] [Upgraded to 75.30]

(First Reaction: The jokes are actually rather sweet and there is something fun about experiencing Roger & Mimi's meeting after listening to "Another Day" so many times, but I'm not super-into the music itself. I appreciate the story and the context, just might not be something I listen to very often.)

...Am I suddenly invested enough in Roger & Mimi to actually watch the film version of this?

......Huh. I fear I actually might be. That sounds crazy, but you know, you have been nominating songs featuring the two of them for years now so it's not entirely unexpected that I'd eventually feel "screw it, let's just see how all this ends".

*writeup on pause*

*one day later*

Four years. It's been a bit over four years since my first exposure to the Rent soundtrack, when Se7en utterly trashed "Another Day" at his unfinished 1,300 song ranking topic. It came in 1,296th place and I didn't care for the song myself either. I don't really do realistic dramas, so I was quite strongly opposed to seeing the film/play or listening to their soundtracks. It's just a more... grounded and realistic story than I'd enjoy. Or such was my understanding at the time from what reviews and summaries I'd heard.

A year and a half later, "Another Day" returned at my second ranking topic--this time in film version and with accompanying video and I suddenly liked it quite a bit. Perhaps the addition of the actors made it easier to connect with them, perhaps the added familiarity from having heard the song before made it almost nostalgic, perhaps the extremely different headspace I was in at the time left me more interested in what it was doing, probably all of the above; but as I listened to it repeatedly for ranking purposes, I actually started to kinda like it.

Then over the next two years, I found myself occasionally going back to the track. It was pretty neat and something I'd revisit occasionally, though I still didn't care to hear any more of the soundtrack. Until you made the very correct choice of nominating another "Roger & Mimi" song and I realized that... ya know, after four years of Roger & Mimi, I was oddly invested in the two of them? I'd suddenly gone from "I absolutely refuse to ever watch this" to "...well, ya know, I think I kinda want to see any other songs with the two of them in it" and, after reading some more spoilers to make sure that the two characters would actually feature in the story, finally broke down and watched the film.

...so, I mean, it took several years, but you did finally convince me to watch it! And it... wasn't bad? Still not exactly my type of thing, I think the story could have used a bit of downtime between songs in places because I could never properly process my feelings towards one track before we were into another one, and the director made some incredibly baffling decisions: He cut the (arguably) best and most emotional song of the film because it was SAD?? He replaced the ending because he thought the audience was too stupid to understand? Thankfully, the deleted song and original ending are both available legally on YouTube.

But.... there were some good songs, I got more Roger & Mimi like I wanted, and I think things largely worked in spite of the director's very best attempts to ruin it. Not a favorite musical, but still pretty neat--out of the new-to-me songs, I'd say "Take Me or Leave Me" and "Goodbye Love" are standouts; I'd probably put "Out Tonight" as third best, though I prefer the Broadway version of the song.

*coughs*

...Not that any of that really matters, but I thought you might find it interesting that this particular nomination did eventually inspire me to watch the film version.

[Final Thoughts: I prefer the film version of this track, but it's still pretty good & I like this a fair amount.]

[Later: I've had the film version of Take Me or Leave Me stuck in my head all week and I'm kinda sad that it wasn't actually nominated. I'm not sure I would have had that song win, but it certainly would have been in the conversation... though I only watched the show because this nominated track convinced me to see more of Roger & Mimi who aren't in that track, so I suppose this was the better nomination even if it didn't win? Funny how that works.]

[Later: A minor boost; not a whole point, but enough to stall the elimination for another day.]

[Another Day: Take a few extra points while I'm at it.]

[Later: One more point.]

[Later: Yeah, I'll go up a tier with this one as well.]

[Later: Eh, four more points. I'm getting way too into this soundtrack lately.]

[Later: Funny & charming, kinda makes me want to watch the film again.]

#159: Mori Calliope - Red (3:36):
https://open.spotify.com/track/3h8efEQ3MsDESpfeKX1JI4?si=a30c6484d022422b

Nominator: Murphiroth [3/32 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 67.47
FInal Score: 75.36

(First Reaction: Some nice metaphors here, but I probably shouldn't have tried to do DEMONDICE and Calliope's EPs back-to-back like this, as I'm starting to get a bit wobbly and having a hard time focusing enough to even get one sentence written per song.

Ya toss out the past, and you can strike it rich
Nobody asked, but the mask is an alright fit

Yeah yeah, kill the past and become the mask, yes, very metaphor that appeals to me-y [yes, I know, it's about abandoning her old persona to be part of Hololive but I still like the metaphor even if it's very literal for her personally], and there's something in there about the moon and I like moons, rarr, I'm so tired.

*adds song to the CLUMP*)

!Definitely a bit better now that I can evaluate it on its own, instead of marathoning a bunch of her songs at once and getting burned out.

[Final Thoughts: I really like this song tonight.]

[Later:

And now I can't get rid of all of these thorns in my head
Bring on the hemorrhaging

Besides the lyrics I already referenced, those are also nicely painful in a way I really enjoy.[

#158: the_miracle_aligner - Pumped Up Kicks 1066 A.D. Cover in Old English BARDCORE (3:59):

Nominator: Raka_Putra [13/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 56.12
Revised Score: 56.12
Final Score: 56.12 [Upgraded to 60.22] [Upgraded to 62.38] [Upgraded to 64.39] [Upgraded to 70.37] [Upgraded to 74.39] [Upgraded to 75.39]

(First Reaction: Not my favorite choice of instruments, but it's an amusing take on the song and there was some clever wordplay to preserve the meaning and feel of the song while using the old language.)

!I don't know. It elicited a genuine laugh and the chorus is quite well done, but I'm still not exactly into this style of music so it's hard to say how much I liked it.

[Final Thoughts: I do kinda like this one. The original version is hardly one of my favorite songs, but this is an amusing spin on it that preserves the track's catchy hooks with some comedic & clever spins on the lyrics. It's actually a lot nicer than I thought it would be.]

[Later: Yes, I also like this these days.]

[Later: Two more points.]

[Later: Moving further up the list,, two points at a time.]

[Later: And now a surprisingly massive jump to the next tier.]

[Later: And four more points for another rather large jump!]

]Later: And two more points. This is another of those songs that I'm starting to really get into.]

#157: Cannibal Ox - Pigeon (6:10):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKEg9K0-3Q4

Nominator: Dragon66116 [2/12 Remaining]

Initial Score: 80.00
Revised Score: 80.00
Final Score: 75.40

(First Reaction: I absolutely love the first verse when combined with the backing track; the track has this sort of.... heaviness and deepness to it, along with a slightly staticy feel that I'm all-about & Vast Aire's voice compliments this to some next-level of hypeness. Somehow Vordul Mega's verse doesn't quite resonate with me--I have nothing negative to say about him or his performance, but my mind kinda blanks out and I find it very hard to pay attention to anything he's saying--it's like my mind decides 'welp, the part we like is over, time to space-out until this thing ends' which is really not fair.)

!A bit overly harsh towards Vordul's verse, but still roughly how I feel... I'm really into the first half of the song and the crushing weight of the backing music, but I never really click with the second verse--it's still *good*, of course, I just find myself personally wanting to hear more of Vast Aire.

[Final Thoughts: I'm not feeling this track as strongly as usual, but I still really like the backing music & Vordul's voice. Would like to hear more of his work someday.]

#156: Dorian Electra - Sorry Bro (I Love You) (1:27):

Nominator: Bane [7/38 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 62.46
Final Score: 60.69 [Upgraded to 61.034] [Upgraded to 62.474] [Upgraded to 64.296] [Upgraded to 70.23] [Upgraded to 71.4644] [Upgraded to 72.062] [Upgraded to 72.1555] [Upgraded to 72.1693] [Upgraded to 76.28]

(First Reaction: All songs go to the clump. Glory to the clump. More seriously, I'll get into this later.)

!Surprisingly sweet song that also features those low tones I tend to love.

[Final Thoughts: Yeah, I like this one.]

[Later: Very minor boost.]

[Later: A very, very minor boost apparently... I think this is the first time I increased a song's score and ran into it again on the same day. I suppose I'll move it up to its Revised Score; I still don't want to eliminate it right now and I'd prefer it at least be delayed by an entire day. (NOTE: Score was slightly revised further to avoid ties)]

[Later: Adding another pair of points to this one.]

[Later: And now I really like this and feel actively bad for eliminating it... so I guess this can have the Reality TV treatment.]

[Later: Moving this one up a bit further.]

[Later that evening: And just a bit further.]

[Later; Four more points; I'm apparently not cutting this anytime soon. In spite of having already done so. *shrugs*]

Nominator: Handsomeboy [7/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 66.73
Revised Score: 75.66
Final Score: 75.66 [Upgraded to 76.30]

(First Reaction: Yes, i like pretty & sad pop ballads.

On the endless road, suddenly aware of the dimming light
Happiness is brief and will never return
...
One day thinking of returning, but it's already too late
...
Ah... the Heavens birthed me as a lonely person thus I possess a gloomy heart

Sad, wistful lyrics delivered by a powerful vocalist. Yes, this is definitely the sort of thing I like.)

!Moving this from "thing I like" to "thing I really like".status.

#154: Dave Matthews Band - #41 (6:39):
https://youtu.be/inpokiZv9vc

Nominator: Mega_Mana [9/38 Remaining]

Initial Score: 64.15
Revised Score: 72.08
Final Score: 76.8027

(First Reaction: Ah, prolonged instrumental outro focusing primarily on the sax, very nice. The rest of the song is pretty neat too--while primarily about a greedy ex-manager, the lyrics are vague enough to suit any "moving on from a failed relationship" angle which makes them easy to connect to or insert your own narrative, and Dave has a very soothing voice. Just a very nice song all around.

Which sounds like it should be worth more points, but I'm going to leave it there for the first impression.)

!The outro feels like it goes on a bit longer than it should, but I think I'm enjoying this enough to bump it up a tier.

[Final Thoughts: I think I'd have preferred a bit more vocals from him; the instrumental is great, but I actively want to hear more of his voice and spending half the song without him isn't exactly what I want the song to be doing. Still, I really like this and I'm moving it up slightly in points.]

Nominator: paulg [7/52 Remaining]

Initial Score: 69.45

Final Score: 76.98

(First Reaction: Very good song, would like to hear more from the band because this is one of those songs where I don't quite connect with it, but enjoy it enough that I think the band would have a song I loved if I took the time to find it.)

!Skimming the comments, apparently this song is unlike anything else Bastille has done? Too bad, I was honestly hoping for more like this... well, either way, I really like this track.

[Final Thoughts: Oh hey,, one of my friends is a big fan of Bastille. I hadn't recognized the name when he mentioned it, nor did any of the Bastille songs I listened to for him sound like this. I guess this track is pretty different.]

Nominator: NFUN: [2/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 77.24
Revised Score: 77.24
Final Score: 77.24

(First Reaction: A very pleasing mixture of feelings come from this song. It's kinda "mystical ruins"-y, kinda "awakening a new power"-y, kinda "epic" but in the good way and not the 'bores me to sleep way' like most things that would be described as epic. And all in under two minutes! Very impressive song.)

!I do wish the song was a minute longer or so because I really like what's here and want more of it, but it's still great.

[Final Thoughts: Yeah, I really like this and will keep it where it is. I thought about moving it down because it's not long enough for me to get the most out of the feelings, but... ehhhhhh... if I like it enough that I'm actively upset about it ending, I'll say it belongs fairly high in the "really like" tier.[

(First Reaction:

Baby it's a black hole
I need it to breathe

Blunt sadness about an incredibly dysfunctional relationship, yes, this is my type of song alright.)

!Combines a catchy beat with lyrics that are, at the very least, adjacent to a lot of my interests. Pretty good track here.

[Final Thoughts: I'm sure there's an "it was too good to be true" joke about how I've fallen out of love with this track, but I don't care to work it out right now. The lyrics are still fairly nice, but I'm thinking there are a lot of songs from the album I'd take over this these days.]

[Later: Let's briefly delay this elimination.]

[Later: I'm back to liking this one, so let's just skip the part where I slightly increase the score each day and jump it back up where it came from.]

[Later: One more point for the time being.]

[Later: And a bit of a bump to reach the next tier.]

============================

#150: Jens Lekman - Kanske Ar Jag Kar I Dig (4:43):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9hoNGZvVT8

Nominator: Jesse Custer [7/29 Remaining]

Initial Score: 74.199
Revised Score: 83.65
Final Score: 77.30

(First Reaction: The charming self-deprecating humor makes the singer instantly likable and cute, while the backing music is also charming and does a good job of accompanying him. It's sweet.)

!This particular version of the track doesn't seem to be available on Spotify in the US anymore, so I've had to substitute this YouTube link. Great performance by everyone on this track, thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.

[Final Thoughts: Going off on tangents that have nothing to do with anything, being nervous when trying to talk to someone, and having all your words come out wrong... he's oddly relatable & sweet. I don't quite think I want this up at the 80 point tier (the instrumental outro goes on a bit long, considering I'm only really here for him), but it should stay near the top of the really like level.]

#149: Zo Keating - Sun Will Set (7:57):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfdPtNf7c4Y

Nominator: rwlh [5/24 Remaining]

Initial Score: 75.09
Revised Score: 80.07
Final Score: 77.39

(First Reaction: I'm having a hard time deciding how I feel about this--it's as though it could exist anywhere in the 50 to 75 point range, but I want to spend more time with this song. The way it adds layers onto itself and some of the lower-pitched notes are wonderful & I feel this track might move up on future listens. Or it could go back down towards the 50s. I really don't know yet, but I'm very interested in listening to it a few more times to find out.)

!This continues to be one of the most mystifying songs to be nominated. Even now, I still don't know how I actually feel about it. It's quite long and definitely more classic than I usually go for, but it is enchanting and I kinda love it anyway? But not completely. I'm not remotely sure where this is going to fall, but I think I can move this up to the 80 point tier.

[Final Thoughts: A very technically impressive cello instrumental and rather emotional; I'm not quite clicking with it as strongly this time around, but it's definitely not dropping below the "really like" tier.]

#148: clipping. - Story 2 (2:14):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbU9UUwxBxA

Nominator: Ark [4/17 Remaining]

Initial Score: 71.064
Revised Score: 74.00
Final Score: 77.50

(First Reaction: I am in awe of this song. To borrow and shamelessly modify someone else's comment, this is an example of how great a story teller the artist is: Within two minutes he manages to tell a complete story, that you can visualize perfectly, while conveying the emotions of the main character. There's not a wasted moment in the track and he is a true artist.)

!An absolute masterwork in storytelling, though it almost feels more like an intense experience than a song.

[Final Thoughts: Fantastic.[

#147: Eminem - Rabbit Run (3:10):
https://youtu.be/EMTUvyAB3zE

Nominator: Kateee [5/21 Remaining]

Initial Score: 81.00
Revised Score: 87.32
Final Score: 79.00

(First Reaction: Eminem continues to be impressive with his speed, clear delivery, and ability to cram a lot of song into a surprisingly short time. It's also damn impressive how his lyrics are simultaneously incredibly specific to him and his life, yet also so generalized at times that I feel everyone can relate. I've mentioned being drawn to blunt sadness a lot in the past and it doesn't get any blunter than "my life's like one great big ball of shit", and who hasn't had to suppress things until they reached a breaking point? Also, I'm almost never able to properly put my thoughts into words, so... ya know, that part's oddly relatable too. And while he may not be a rabbit or identify as one, i have to admit, the song title and ending is... perhaps far more inspiring to a delusional freak like me than it's meant to be.)

!Every Eminem song that gets nominated for this series is great.

[Final Thoughts: A great song that is incredibly impressive lyrically that I really like, but I'm not quite in love with it at the moment.]

And I think I'll be taking two unscheduled days off. With apologies, things are a bit of a mess... I've gotten wildly carried away with moving things aside to null values in a "I'll decide how many extra points to give these later" in a sort of void. And we're kinda at the edge of the next tier? So I need to work out which of these songs are getting moved up a tier and get the ones that aren't into some sort of order to be eliminated in.

So... until I figure out what's happening to all 30 songs in the void, it'll be a bit hard to continue. Thank you for your understanding and we will hopefully resume on the 2nd.

I find this statement fascinating. I think I'm torn between knowing what you mean and disagreeing? Much of clipping.'s work focuses on sound design, experimental music, and performance art, so it's a fair characterisation... it's called "Story 2" not "Song 2" after all. But I also find it extremely musical, because my favourite thing about it is how it plays with time signatures in such an intensely structured way, which people have written about with very music-oriented language, e.g. https://www.rapanalysis.com/2016/10/clipping-rap-music-analysis/

In spite of all that, "intense experience" really does describe what I feel when I listen to clipping., especially with the subject matter being so dark. I guess this song is a lot of things.

Aww. I was wondering what PV stood for or if there were alternate versions.

I'll read through that when I have more time, though I don't think I'll be able to properly understand it yet. For all of TunnelScene's best efforts at educating me each year, I still can't really pick up on time signatures beyond a basic "songs can be at different speeds & some songs also change speed during their runtime" and "most songs are in 4/4"... any analysis of even a basic song goes well beyond that & story 2 is not a basic song.

(I mentioned somewhere before about not really having much of an education & music was very much not part of what little I was taught; there were lessons about how listening to anything other than traditional Christian hymns would damn you for eternity because music was made by Satan. And while neither I, nor my mother, actually believed that it did mean that I'd have to learn about music on my own and I... just kinda didn't.)

Aaaanywho..., I wasn't trying to critique the song exactly or say that it wasn't music and I really enjoy it. But when I listen to it, I'm drawn to the story & things like the way it illustrates panic with the way it continually escalates in tempo, simulating a heart racing/panic attack. When I remember the track, I recall the drama; the rush of emotions; the story telling; the way every aspect is very carefully created to enhance the story; its attempt to fully immerse the listener in the character's mind & experiences. I identify it primarily in terms of the story & experience & emotions, with the musical experience being secondary (or quaternary?) to everything else.

That is likely a personal failure if anything, but it certainly wasn't meant to be a knock on the song... though I do see how it comes off that way when I try to distill everything down to one sentence. My apologies & thank you for the link. [I'm noticing a trend of getting nifty links and stories the lazier and more incorrect I am. I shall continue to try not to take the wrong lesson from this.]

Songs later, I'm running *way* behind today.

Four songs to start the day/end the current tier, followed by a standings update.

========================

#146: Uma Musume Pretty Derby - Umapyoi Densetsu (4:30):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEVC3prQz0Y

Nominator: Handsomeboy [6/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 56.13
Revised Score: 57.17
Final Score: 58.529 [Upgraded to 59.529] [Upgraded to 63.27] [Upgraded to 66.337] [Upgraded to 74.30] [Upgraded to 78.334] [Placed Into Void] [Upgraded to 79.09]

(First Reaction: Horse Girl Idols, huh? I'd prefer singing cartoon ponies over anime schoolgirls with ears (we need more four legged singers to be honest), but I can work with it and the song itself ain't bad either.)

!Not my favorite song, but I must admit there is a lot of fun here.

[Final Thoughts:

Morning training is called, shooby-dooby whoa!
Drinking soda after running, exploded to die!

Again, not the best translation I've found, but funny enough to be worth quoting. (I have found better, just really wanted to quote that line anyway) Song is fun; I mean, it's a jpop song performed by a group of horse idols, and I'm exactly the right type of crazy to enjoy such a thing.]

[Later: It is quite fun, but I don't think I want to move it up... but maybe I do... ehhhh.... alright, one extra point while I think about it.]

[Later: I've had the chorus stuck in my head for a while... I think I'll go ahead and move this up a tier, yeah.]

[Later: A few extra points.[

[Later: This song will not leave my mind. I guess that's worth raising up the mid-point of the next tier? Probably?]

[Later: Infectious. Take extra points.]

[Later: I dunno... setting this to a null value for a bit.]

[Later: It is cute and fun, but this full-length extended version feels like it goes on longer than it needs to and I don't know that I'd say I love it. I do really, really like it & it's at the very high-end of this tier, but I think I'll be cutting it here.]

#145: Touche Amore - Green -(3.03)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LHcaKf7mcc

Nominator: Xtlm [2/13 Remaining]

Initial Score: 100
Revised Score: 73.50
Final Score: 78.46 [Placed Into Void] [Upgraded to 79.16]

(First Reaction: Fun metaphors with a spoken desire to be seemingly anything but human complete with far clearer & cleaner vocals than the Post Hardcore genre is typically known for? Now that's a band after my own heart. And this song is placing me in the most intriguing headspace... I've finally started watching Infinity Train recently (haven't started the fourth season yet) and listening to this makes me feel like The Cat. My inner monologue is even being voiced by Kate Mulgrew right now, which dare I say it, may be the most fascinating thing to happen to me thus far.

...Perhaps the "joke" about that unfortunate song getting a lower score for making me identify as a male cat was less of a joke than we thought it was, hmm? Or perhaps there's lingering resentment about Sylvester walking on two paws (i do enough of that in the real world, thank you very much, *paces around on all four paws to make her point; whatever point that was, as it's a fictional action inside a thought bubble INSIDE ANOTHER THOUGHT BUBBLE and you'd probably go mad trying to comprehend how that nonsense works, so it's best not to ask questions at this point*)

Well, either way, this phenomenon merits a closer inspection. Let's add this song to the perfect score list and see if this effect holds up future listens, shall we?

[Fluttershy's Note: Investigating phenomena feels more like a Janeway statement...]

Nonsense, The Cat is also fascinated by the unexpected. Also, it's still Kate Mulgrew either way, so close enough.)

!Sadly, I can't quite get myself back into that headspace; thankfully, this style of post hardcore is quite welcome and the lyrics still appeal to me highly, so I'm glad this song is here even if I'm not quite obsessed with it at the moment.

[Final Thoughts: I do really like this track and I may check out a few other tracks from this album after the ranking because I could use some more songs in this style,]

[Later: Ehhh.... also putting this in the Void for a moment. I don't know that I want to move it up, but I want to pause and think about it for a moment.]

[Later: A song that I really like and I remember the very... intriguing headspace it once inspired, but I can't quite recapture the magic and think I'll leave it here in the very high end of "really liked".

And hey, remember when Infinity Train was something that could be watched legally? Ha ha, wow this ranking has gone on for a long time.]

#144: Evita (London 2006) - Eva Beware Of The City (2:09):
https://open.spotify.com/track/3hZqdvAOEqVDdxxmjoESaV?si=fef4fefa492d4e78

Nominator: @Raka_Putra [12/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 64.00
Revised Score: 64.00
Final Score: 60.00 [Upgraded to 64.06] [Upgraded to 74.45] [Upgraded to 76.79] [Upgraded to 76.99] [Placed Into Void] [Upgraded to 79.63]

(First Reaction: I really enjoy both singers' voices on this track and this is one of the few songs that I wish were longer. I adore his warnings and the fiery rebuttals from Eva, such a marvelous contrast in song style between both singers, so gloriously wonderfully unique & so brief and ending in the middle of a note. And the follow-up song, Buenos Aires, while adequate is several steps below "Eva Beware Of The City" and lacks the duality that I loved to begin with. Ah well. This is still a great song, I just wish there were more of it.)

!Nothing else to add, I feel good about the original score and first reaction.

[Final Thoughts: I still like this, but I want to look at this as part of the Neo Clump for a bit.]

[Later: I don't know why I moved this down in the first place, but I'll be correcting that now.]

[Later: I've had this song stuck in my head so many times over the past month that I am shocked--SHOCKED--that this is somehow below the 70 point tier.]

[Later: Adding two more points to this for the moment.]

[Later: A minor boost. I do really like it, but it leaves me wanting more & the follow-up song doesn't feature the aspects I most enjoyed, so I can't even pair them together as one long song. Ah well.]

[Later: Moved aside for a while.]

[Later: I do really like this and it's incredibly memorable, but I don't quite want to move this up another tier.]

#143: Zoomlight - Detonation [8:36]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hy7dhRUyJ4A

Nominator: TunnelScene [4/27 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 64.00003
Final Score: 75.43 [Upgraded to 78.45] [Placed Into Void] [Upgraded to 79.789]

(First Reaction: This definitely feels like it's in the same vein as Dux Mix 1 from last year's topic, though this isn't as immediately captivating (Dux had deeper, heavier tones to it along with Higher Love, while Detonation feels much higher pitched) it's still adjacent to something that I love and earns a spot in the clump.)

!It's a fantastic idea and I like the general idea of what's going on here, but I never get fully entranced with it as I did with things like Dux Mix or some of bunbleman's best tracks.

[Final Thoughts: I'm liking this quite a bit tonight. Very pleasingly odd; I'm particularly fond of the beginning of the song, with the spoken words that I haven't made out much of. Very nice.]

[Later: Adding three more points to this song.]

[Later: More for the void.]

[Later: The first section is outstanding, as is the outro where the chaos and distortions are really cranked up a notch; I feel like there are some other highlights, but it's very hard to recall what they were or when they might have played. The song is very much a journey that I really like taking... but I think "really like" is the way I'd describe my feelings towards the track. Definitely at the very high end of that category, possibly the highest, but not quite something I'd describe with love.]

Metalmind jumps into the "most songs remaining" lead with 13, though Raka remains close behind at 12.

Every Time I Die's album "Radical" is the album with the most songs remaining at 4.

The remaining participant that hasn't lost a song for the longest time is sergio; his most recent eliminated song was in #357th place.

BlackDra90n: 6.67%
Haste: 6.45%
NFUN: 6.45%

While "most songs remaining" is competitive, Metalmind completely smashes the percentage chart as the only person with more than half of her nominations remaining. Congratulations!

----------------------

Hoping that is all accurate. A few songs were moved up to the next tier just a few minutes ago after I already had stats made up based on those songs being eliminated... reasonably certain I corrected all the relevant numbers this time.

-

Will be back later this afternoon with two more songs to start the next tier, so we can get back to a nice round number of songs remaining; schedule should be back to normal starting tomorrow.
