By "most recent" I mean debut, and that doesn't count variants like BOTW Link or Zelda.

But I was thinking about this and struggling to come up with an answer. I think I'm probably forgetting somebody who transcends their game, but that's why I'm asking. What say you?

It depends on how you define iconic. Is it recognizability at first glance? If so the Among Us spacemen are 100% it. If it's impact within their genre, Harrier du Bois/Kim Kitsuragi count. If you mean mainstream impact among casuals, it's Sans.

Outside of Amogus, probably Cuphead in the more traditional 'iconic' sense? Like he feels like he occupies a similar space Mega Man used to when it comes to at least recognizing him as a video game character.

it is 100% amogus it is literally the only one that has become its own meme. there are memes on Reddit of things that look like amogus.

as well, AOC played it (with Canadas NDP leader among others!). It was *the thing* for part of the pandemic.

And the cat from Stray isn't the only orange tabby in a recent game, for that matter. The Saints Row reboot has Snickerdoodle, who's one of the Saints lieutenants, and she has a name and character.

Pikachu counts solely based on the one everybody knows, because people recognize him instantly. The same is true for the "space guys from Among Us" in that regard. What makes a character iconic is instant recognition from at least one of name, design, notable quote, or story event. Mainstream impact matters also because of this. If people - and I don't mean just this board - talk about them, that counts.

Also, I've literally never heard of some of the suggestions in this topic. A character can't be "iconic" if people haven't heard of them because they're too niche.

Really pleased that Mae keeps popping up in cool places and for cool reasons, he said. Seeing a giant bootleg version of a character you drew in your apartment years back used as a giant representation of resistance and survival during a time of reactionary violence and increased danger is really something. We support the message and the implied threat of axe violence.

That and the video made me laugh. Good find.

Steve is from, like, 2009.

There's something to be said for people like Zagreus, Dragonborn, Handsome Jack...

Truth is, the cultural milieu is just different for gaming nowadays. It's why I named Aloy earlier - she's got the same sort of flagship energy as Kratos. But with gaming history already set as it is, that's why recent "icons" are more those with memetic status, as opposed to just being iconic characters from iconic games.

come on guys, amogus is from 2018 and gained popularity in 2020. biggest? yes. most recent? no.

I would submit both Zagreus Hades and Lady D Resident Evil as more recent entries into iconic gaming canon. Don't underestimate horny.
