Yeah Shiraishi is hella boring. The animation is definitely nice, but when it got delayed after 6 episodes I saw no reason to pick it up again. Especially since great stuff like Dangers of My Heart was airing in Spring.

As someone who's an active fan of Maximum the Hormone even outside of anime/manga, as soon as I saw the chapter title I literally said out loud "no fuckin way"

Huh. Soul Eater is a lot goofier than I remember. Soul's attitude, Black Star's bravado, and Kid's OCD were as fun as expected, but the slap stick was a bit much, and Spirit was obnoxious. I made it to Kid's first day and the bro scene, which is really all I was looking forward to, so I decided to just cut the rewatch there. Shame I didn't make it to Excalibur, but oh well.

Decided to jump to New Game, and I love it so much. Just finished episode 6, and there's quite a bit more fanservice than I remember; which is saying something, as I expected Ko to spend not an insignificant amount of screentime with no pants on.

MC has an ability that makes him beloved by all, especially the cute girls that are magically attracted to him. I just dropped it after episode 4, but I don't think it's any more objectionable than any other isekai/isekai-adjacent fantasy series

She was in the first episode. she is the doctor in Season 1 that is doing Yuji's autopsy

Speaking of JJK, they finally animated the most iconic panel in the series and it was kind of a miss on the exact panel (I... think it is impossible to be as good as the manga there though tbh, it was still cool) but the scene as a whole beyond the one moment was incredible.

I honestly don't rememeber anything that happens in JJK until the Shibuya arc. My eyes completely glazed over during the flashback stuff when I was reading it.

To clarify I mean back when he first left, not now. I haven't read in months.

I actually didn't care much for the backstory either on my weekly reads. Shibuya is what got me really into the series. The anime has really made it a lot better than I remembered.

Still, now that I have an appreciation for it, it now makes me realize the (big manga spoilers) Kenjaku twist really undermines a lot of what's been building up with Geto. On first read I didn't care about him much at all, so I thought the it was cool, but now I think it's actually kinda compelling as is and might feel like a cheap bait and switch later.

I briefly have access to Netflix again, so I'm going to watch at least some of the Ghibli movies. Previously, I'd only seen Kiki's Delivery Service and When Marnie Was There.

Today I watched Howl's Moving Castle. It had an interesting setting and beautiful animation. I also enjoyed all the unique people who found their way to the castle and the kind of quasi-family they created there. Sophie in particular was a great character. As for the overall story, it was okay. I was definitely invested in Sophie's curse. Anything to do with Howl himself was much less interesting, but it was still fine. The war never felt like it got the focus it deserved, so it was hard to care about that big picture stuff. Regardless of any complaints, though, I'm glad I watched this.

I finished up Sonny Boy. It's fine, even if they didn't spend as much time answering the "What the fuck is going on here" question rather than doing what just having fun with the concept.

Now onto re-watch phase. Gonna bust through the rest of Quintuplets and CotE (the seasons I missed), plus maybe a few others series.

I loved HMC when I saw it, but that was like 15 years ago, so I dunno if I'd care for it as much nowadays.

Something about the themes of Howl's Moving Castle really didn't sit well with me and I can't remember what it was anymore. Definitely my least favorite Ghibli work I've seen though. (I've only seen like 6 or so of their films, to be clear)

I've seen all of Ghibli's films (except the new one), and I'd definitely put HMC in their bottom five. The plot's a complete mess, and everything's just so dark and un-fun.

Today I watched Castle in the Sky. It's definitely my favorite out of the four Ghibli movies I've seen so far. It had a fun, adventurous vibe throughout, plus lots of good characters. The two mains were great. I liked the quirky pirates too except for the one scene where they all tried to flirt with a little girl, which was thankfully short and played for laughs. The setting was great with the airship technology combined with some more fantastical elements. More than anything, though, I loved how well-paced the plot was. It set everything up really well, never had a dull moment, and built to a lot of satisfying, epic moments. There are still several Ghibli movies left for me to watch on Netflix, but it'll be hard to top this one!

I don't think I've ever anticipated a Shounen anime adaptation more than to whenever they get around to Gash Bell 2 in like....2 years or so.

Any reason to think it'll be better than the new Shaman King anime?

I don't care for Shaman King for one, lol. I could never get into that show even back in the day.

Though as far as an actual situational difference in the source material, Zatch Bell 2 is being self published as a monthly seinen by the creator's own company. It's been an absolute blast so far as a fan of the original.

But really I can't speak for the new Shaman King, I didn't watch a second of it. That property means absolutely nothing to me personally.

Continuing through the Ghibli movies, I watched Whisper of the Heart today. I don't think it managed to unseat Castle in the Sky as my current favorite, but I still really loved this movie. It was a sweet story about a young girl finding herself. I liked all the characters, and I appreciated how they all felt like realistic early-teens. They were more mature than one might expect at times, but it was also clear that they were still fumbling to figure out other things in their lives. Also, for a movie without any magic, it sure had a lot of magical moments. Shizuku was always finding beautiful scenery or whimsical things. That scene where the guy played the violin and she sang was amazing. I enjoyed her character arc a lot, too. I really related with the whole amateur writer bookworm angle. My only minor complaint from the whole movie was the guy proposing at the end. Take it slower, dude! You haven't even gone on an official date yet. Scene would've been so much better if he just said he loved her without the proposal, imho.

I was also shocked when I realized that this movie was the origin of the whole "lofi girl" meme. That was a neat thing to catch.

That's one I still need to watch.

It kind of bothers me when the world building and scope is the thing that's only praised about one piece. I get why, cause there's nothing else like this, but the front half was popular for sheer storytelling man.

Yeah honestly the more people talk about how One Piece has become such a huge monumental entity, the more I'm just reminded bout how actually reading it is way worse than it used to be.

Like there's cool stuff right now because it's non Straw Hat stuff (and the SH stuff being the thing that's the least interesting to follow is probably the biggest problem I have with OP right now), but I still tend to put reading chapters off for days, even weeks sometimes, because I know reading it is to almost feel like work.

It didn't used to be like this.

Man I don't think I've been this excited for new chapters since Marineford.

I get super excited whenever I see a new chapter to read and will literally stop what I'm doing to read it.

I would also say the great world building is a product of the great storytelling that is being done. Like we are getting some great storytelling with Garp right now and I thought Egghead stuff was also a really good story with everything happening there.

I'm mostly raggin on part 2 in general. These chapters are very exciting to me but usually I'd be the person who prefers the actual meat of the arcs instead of what's in between. These cutaways mostly feel like set up to me. They're good, but I want to see Egghead get going.
