God, even if we're after the wave from a few years ago, there's still too fucking many. Even the first episode of a show is just, "I Reincarnated." I mean, sure. There are great isekai (Konosuba) or even solid/good ones (Ascendance of a Bookworm), but goddamn. These shows have to work extra hard to even stand out, much less not just "exist" at this point.

There's plenty of non-isekai to enjoy!

I know. If nothing else, the "finding a show to watch" phase is helping me take a chainsaw to an almost neverending list of shows. Can't find those Lull In The Seas and Space Battleship Yamatos if I don't suffer through 50 different Land of Leadales first episodes first. I suppose.

*Note: Lull in the Sea and Yamato are not Isekai. Just saying picking a show and seeing, "I'm just a normal guy or girl doing normal guy or girl things" is old, even by anime standards at this point. It really makes me appreciate when shows actually TRY being creative."

It's possible the anime will redeem it some by making it easier to follow.

Well, I was talking about trying to bypass all the sameness and find something unique, and then Sonny Boy happened. Not sure if this is going to end up being good. Psychological and weird think pieces are like that, but I'll be damned if it isn't different.

Sonny Boy is the worst isekai I've seen.

Dead Mount Death Play just came out. From the Baccano/Durarara writer. It's about a powerful person from a fantasy world who gets reincarnated on Earth. Highly entertaining series.

This is like the 4th time I've been reminded of Re:Creators and have gone to see if they've released it physically yet and NO DICE.

What's wrong with 2000s anime? That's when Baccano came out...

2000s anime look ugly with a few exceptions. Most of them end up looking like Death Note. But once in a while you get something like Eureka 7 and TTGL.

Death Note is ugly....?

Yeah Death Note is ugly. The manga looks great. The anime has a sort of lifeless flatness to it. It's hard to explain but it felt like every studio used the same artist or went to the same art school or tracing. Like if you plucked Light and dumped him in Gundam SEED or Elfen Lied he would not look out of place. Closest analogy is the PS360 grey and brown shooter aesthetic.

Early 00's anime looked relatively bad until they actually got good with all the new digital technology. (Until around '05 or '06?) There's still plenty of great shows, but that whole era really stands out for subpar visuals.

Also after 17 years, EDs are returning to the One Piece anime. I assume when OP25 debuts in 2 weeks. I wonder if they cut those back down to 1:30 or if they stay at 2:30 and just have less in each episode XD

Thankfully people seem to think the Rurouni Kenshin remake is super mediocre now that it's airing, so I don't have to hit that button much anymore.

ah really? I haven't watched the 3rd ep yet but I liked the second, it felt very comfy watching it... seems a little early to write things off so soon.

That did remind me that the netflix Junji Ito series from back in January was apparently really atrocious so maybe we still need to temper our expectations here. I still haven't gotten around to watching the Hanging Balloons episode yet but it was the highest-rated one (on imdb, at least)

Really? All I've seen is people saying it's better than the original, but it's covering a weaker part of the series anyway since the Tokyo arc is no one's favorite.

Uzumaki is 4 episodes and they've been working on it since 2019. I don't think you'll have to worry about its animation quality.

idk man I remember the high quality episodes of the original Kenshin being really good. I don't see this adaptation rising to the occasion. The first episode had a very bland direction to me. But we'll see when it gets to the Saito fight.

Ryza is comfy, filled with thighs, well-paced and FILLED WITH THIGHS.

I finally watched Summer Time Rendering. I enjoyed it quite a bit! It had a lot of elements I enjoy in fiction. That included fantastical things like the time loops and the supernatural threat, but also mundane things like someone returning home to a small town and reconnecting with everyone in the aftermath of a tragedy. I liked all of the characters. Ushio was my favorite, but Shinpei and Hizuru were good too. In the beginning I was hopeful that this would become one of my all-time favorites... and, sadly, it didn't quite reach that level. I thought Shide was a lame villain who took way too much focus, that was the main negative. He wasn't bad enough to ruin the show or anything, but he definitely dragged it down. Still, it was a thoroughly enjoyable anime, and I'm glad that I finally watched it.

With some tweaking to tone down the jarring fanservice elements, and an ending that is just plain shorter, STR could be an all-timer. Still great though.

Yeah, some of the fanservice stuff felt really out of place. In a serious supernatural mystery/thriller, one of the early plot points was... the color of a girls panties, and another one was Hizuru's breast size. I expect certain amount of anime bullshit from shows, but it really didn't fit in here! Luckily it was toned down considerably after the beginning.

It's a good show through and through. Found it pretty consistent, personally. Shide isn't great though, you're right about that.

Started reading the Solo Leveling book whilst on a plane yesterday because I had nothing else to do. This does not feel particularly well written? It feels like I could write better than this. I'm not sure the order things came out but did the manga release first and then the book piggybacked off that so they didn't care on quality or something.

It's not awful, it's just very basic I guess. Or maybe it's because I don't read a ton anymore and what I do read is far higher quality (Terry Pratchett is my favorite author) so the quality difference is noticeable.

I'm finally getting around to finishing shows from Winter 2023! I'm a few seasons behind, but hopefully I'll start catching up now.

Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible wasn't terrible. It just really didn't have a whole lot going for it. Kubo herself was pretty good, and the art was surprisingly pretty at times. I also enjoyed a lot of the cute moments between her and Shiraishi. I'm a sucker for characters blushing around each other. Still, this was nowhere near the best at being that kind of anime (the Ice Guy anime, also from Winter 2023, was the peak show for cute blushing moments). Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible was, sadly, held back by its central concept. No one except Kubo ever notices Shiraishi, not even when he's right in front of them. The show kept desperately trying to find ways to make that idea poignant or interesting or funny, and it failed every single time. Shiraishi wound up being one of the most milquetoast characters I've ever seen. The show never sold me on what Kubo saw in him. Shiraishi was so boring. No matter what cute thing Kubo did, he barely reacted to anything.

Kubo was the one carrying this show. She just wasn't good enough to carry it very far. I didn't like how she never even realized that she had a crush on Shiraishi, so a lot of their interactions were just the two of them fumbling around the edges of kinda-sorta flirting. Girl, you're leaving your house early to walk to school with him and finding excuses to get closer to him while hoping he notices your new shampoo scent. Admit to yourself that you like him, you dork. I was genuinely shocked when I finally realized they were in high school because the way they acted felt a lot closer to inexperienced middle schoolers.

Like I said, I didn't hate it. I actually appreciated how Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible was a light and easy watch. It just had a lot of meh elements that held it back.

No, the novel came first. It's one of many dime-a-dozen light novels that tend to be written in a very basic way. What catapulted it into stardom was the manhwa version, which has exceptional art.

well putting snobbiness aside, LN tend to get very rushed minimal/low effort translations too. Like with Danmachi I've noticed a lot of basic errors slipping in from where the translators/editors didn't really proofread things too closely and gave it a pass after just skimming it to see that the word processor didn't show any red squiggly lines underneath words. As well as some things that even I, someone who doesn't know any Japanese at all could tell was mistranslated.
