Both of their predecessors were amongst my all time favorite. Was massively disappointed by both games.

I tolerated delays and waited pretty eagerly for Shovel Knight's King Knight campaign, only to not enjoy it at all and drop the game like a rock.

I'm a bit disappointed I didn't finish Elden Ring but I did get a solid 20 hours of intense play time.

If on PC, get a good friend and co-op it with the Seamless Co-Op mod. Has turned Elden Ring from a game I'd never play into one of my favorites for me and my wife.

For me, my biggest disappointment is Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness

FFXV. I really don't want go go into this one. Just so...mediocre.

Forspoken. I still love it, but it did not live up to expectations.

Resident Evil 3 Remake. After the magic that was RE2 Remake, this was just a letdown.

Shenmue 2-3. They were just...not as good as I remember and kinda bad.

I'm sure that if I looked back I could find a few more, but this early in the morning I can't think of any. That being said, I've found that most of the disappointments I've played after I've bought into the hype were very recent.

Also, ME3 at launch. I have a lot more respect for it nowadays. Them not brining back the multi-player for MELE was a crime , both from a fan perspective and a "they could have made so much money" perspective <_<

I found Smash Ultimate to also be underwhelming, for a final series release. Though I think I just grew out of my interest in fighting games by the time it came out. The game itself isn't fundamentally bad, I just felt no desire to go back to it after 2 weeks with it

To be fair, it's gotten much btter since then. Especially if you play on PC or next gen consoles.

Unless your gripes were unrelated to bugs and performance issues?

I haven't been hyped for over a decade, but the last one i was disappointed is SFxT.

Victoria 3, sadly. Victoria 2 kept me glued in for days while I haven't touched Vicky 3 since launch.

Oh, I found Bad Company 2 to be disappointing as well, though I only played for the campaign.

saga frontier 2, i actually really liked the first one because the combat system was good with the dopamine hits (sparking techs)

I hate that we'll never get another Bad Company because of it. They took out all the unique stuff from the first one and then folded the rest into the main series afterwards so they've said they don't what to do to make another BC that stands out from the main games.

I'm struggling to think of a game I had considerable hype for that let me down right out of the gate.

Fallout 3 eventually let me down in a big way, but I really enjoyed it for awhile, and would probably still enjoy select bits of it if I ever got around to replaying it.

Final Fantasy XIII probably holds the record for least amount of time I've put into a game I paid full price for, but I can't say I was super hyped for it.

Farcry 3 was my first foray into the series. I thought the story was contrived but the gameplay was fun enough. I enjoyed doing stealthy captures with the bow.

Feel like they over promised and really under delivered in regards to gameplay and world interactivity. I might go back to it one day tho.

also, xenosaga. the combat felt really bad in that game.

GTA IV. Loved the III series and was ready to see it go to new levels. Bought it at full price on release only to see a scaled back experience that was also trying to be some serious story. Also had a "been there done that" kind of feeling playing it.

The game itself is...fine. Mechanically it's nothing to write home about but does the job well enough. A solid 7/10 game. But following 2 it's a fucking travesty. They set out, with 2, to make a game that set the benchmark for systemic interaction the way that Crysis set the benchmark for graphics. Then they decided that was way too hard so they chopped all of it out for the sequel, except for the scaled back fire propagation. And in the 15 years since 2 came out we still have not gotten a game that touches what it does. Instead we got the open world slurry of today which Farcry 3 was one of the biggest founders of.

Plague Tale: Innocence. Rats very quickly became too mechanical to really be eery or scary, and I wanted to chuck the little brother into a bin for most of the game.

The Outer Worlds, I was excited for "Fallout in Space" but I found myself completely disengaged from the game, I don't know what it was but I just found myself leaving the game without even beating it. While I spend hundreds of hours in both Fallout 4 and Skyrim (and still play then every so often)

The Outer Worlds had a small amount of content overall, in comparison to even something like New Vegas.

I remember getting a large amount of quests to do, finishing those then getting to the city type planet, getting about 20 quests and finishing those and then I realized I was actually done with the game.

It just felt like when the game was really ramping up, it abruptly halted

To be honest though, Bethesda did learn some lessons from Fallout 3, and while they didn't really learn much from NV in the strictest sense, they at least did their best to imitate it. 4's Main Quest structure is almost a carbon copy of NV: Act 1, hunt down the mysterious gunman who wronged you; Act 2, get courted by the 'good' factions while planning to infiltrate the 'bad' faction and subsequently get courted by them too; Act 3, solidify your faction choice and take on the remaining factions. They even copied the freebie 4th faction you can fall back on if you screw things up with the big 3. Companions in 4 also much more closely resemble NV than 3, and while they're still a step down overall from Boone, Cass, Veronica and co, 4's companions remain one of the game's brighter points.

It was also clear (at least to me) that they responded to certain criticisms concerning Fallout 3's worldbuilding. FO3's purifier plot has little to no relevance to the actual game world; meanwhile in 4 you can't travel a hundred feet in any direction without finding someone obsessing over Synths. The 'DC got hit harder' justification for Fallout 3 looking like the apocalypse happened yesterday fell apart hard under scrutiny, so they wisely had Boston's big nuke land well outside city center; this not only let them leave most of the city still standing without having to make excuses, it let you explore a chunk of the map that far more plausibly represented how a direct nuclear strike would ravage the landscape.

...however, these finer points tend to get lost under the general dumbing-down of the RPG elements and dialogue, and I can't really blame people for not noticing or particularly caring about the more subtle improvements 4 made over 3.

Brink

Cyberpunk and Elden Ring were supposed to revolutionize the gaming industry. The latter was really good...but not Skyrim level good.
