Oh dude, they have to put that in as a joke somewhere. Have link walk into one of the towns, you hear the music as he walks through the entrance with a stoic look on his face. The camera is focused on him form the a front semi close up angle. Then it turns to a wide side from his back and it has some random villager singing the song.

Mario's story is even worse/ non existent than Zelda and it still made bank.

A story isn't required to make a movie. Look at Avatar.

It would be crazy if they didn't make one, but they have to be careful with Zelda. If they go with cartoony Wind Waker or Link's Awakening Remake art style, they can do whatever they want and probably be okay.

But if they go with OOT, TP, SS, or BotW/TotK style they might want to tone down the slapstick.

Illumination has never made a good movie.

I really think Id want a Legend of Zelda film to be live action as opposed to animated, with a more serious tone (not completely serious mind you) than Mario.

I can't wait to hear about how this fits into the timeline

Give us a Zelda HBO series with passionate creators and a good budget and it'll be incredible. OoT already has the framework for a decent runtime, even if it's only a season as a kid and maybe 2 seasons as an adult.

Wind Waker was pretty bad for some of us, lol. I also never liked it, but I bought Twilight Princess and loved it.

They made the movie. It had really good designs, a solid voice cast, great references and faithfulness to the aesthetic of the games...Generally, it was made by people who know and love Mario, and it shows.

If it had been bad, people would say so. Video game movies are usually bad, and only very recently have they started to get good.

For every movie they made, their marketing budget was always higher than their actual production budget. They know how to sell their movies and always make good ROI, but that doesn't mean they make good movies.

Nintendo cares about the ROI much more than their Rotten Tomatoes score. Illumination's Mario was exactly what Nintendo wanted and if a company gets in Nintendo's good books they're going to stick around.

You're correct in that none of that means they make good movies. However, they also make good movies.

The only reason I think Mario is their best film because it's the only one I feel was made out of actual passion and love for the source material, it got the right spirit but lets not kid ourselves that's basically "references the movie". If you were to actually judge the movie on its own merits at being a competent flick, Despicable Me 1 is the only one I can consider standing out the best and it's an average movie.

For a LoZ movie, I can see Dreamworks or Sony Pictures (with the right team like they did with Puss in Boots The Last Wish and Spiderverse) being a better fit.

I don't think Illumination's other movies are made with any less passion than Mario is. They're all good looking films with a lot of attention to detail.

But you care about Mario already so you like it more. That's okay. Good source material made up for Illumination's weaknesses.

But dunno how long they can just rely on that though. Eventually the newness of it is gonna wear off. Then again I guess these movies are primarily for kids so it doesn't really matter.

Yeah I already said I have a bias for Mario. If I were to personally rate the Mario movie, I would give it a 8.5/10. If I were to rate it based on its own merits as a film though, I would agree with the critics of a 5/10.

I take care of my niece and nephews quite often, hence why that's the only reason I've seen every Illumination movie and almost all of them are great cute flicks to watch with family or friends that want something safe and fun. The issue with me is that I'm a bit of a cinephile, especially with animated movies, where I watched too many good movies aimed at kids/families to ever lie to myself that Illumination films are even close to their Caliber.

I really liked The Lorax. That and Depicable Me are both above average in my book.

Mario, I think is about the same level as the two Sing movies. They're all fun and they deliver on their premise but there's not much else.

I don't know if I'd say it shows "passion" for Mario. Just referencing a bunch of stuff from the games doesn't cut it. It's nice that they remembered some of the "deep cuts" but they didn't really do anything interesting with it. Also I was expecting it to be filled with references and Easter eggs but there weren't that many, and almost all of them were in the trailers too. Overall I wasn't disappointed but I wasn't impressed either.

Overall that's how I feel about Illumination. Their movies aren't bad but they're never great. They look nice but are bland and generic.

I don't think I have ever actually seen an entire illumination studios movie, mostly because I hate how those fucking minions are on every product and TV commercial to the point where I don't even care if the movies they are in are good. The pure over-saturation makes me hate them.

Their animation/humor style was alright for the Mario movie but I can't see it fitting Zelda. Hell, I think Illumination for anything other than Mario stuff and Donkey Kong wouldn't fit. Can you imagine Illumination doing a Metroid movie? Ugh.

To ride off the success of current Zelda they could've gone with a more serious animation studio like Studio Ghibli or something.

True, but I think I heard them say they wanted to branch out eventually.

Ironically, the Zelda game with the best story (Wind Waker) also happens to be the most cartoonish visually.
