Baking the Wondertart is my favorite Cuphead song that I've heard for sure, but also from what I know it's the least Cuphead song on either soundtrack so that may be why lol. Staff Roll is my third favorite video game song of all time though, so... yeah Wondertart stood no chance. The Void of Space is a decent song, but man that synth that plays for the entire first 40 seconds is not good. And it comes back later. Great. Memories in the Mist is a nice song that I wish changed up more, but it's pleasant enough so it gets my vote. Unused Song 2 is kinda crazy good for what it is, but it's not a favorite. It's Pizza Time! is a song I was addicted to around the time of the game's release, and while I'm not quite as big on it now it's still a 9.25/10. This song is insane, and I think all I wish it did differently was fill out the backing a little more in the section between 2:59 and 3:13, just feels a little too empty.

The highest-rated song to show up in VGMC since I first joined! It doesn't feel like my personal nom though - I found it through cako's submission for the Supra 2020 Awards, and I think it has a good number of fans. It's got PMD vibes, JRPG forest vibes, a well-known indie composer behind it, and...the ascending-arpeggio-played-by-harplike-instrument uses a lot of the same notes as the one in Fangs Bared At God! I still wonder why it doesn't get talked about more, it's in my top 5 VGM ever. I had to emotionally distance myself from it today as I often do, or else it can really mess up my mental state. I had never realized or noticed cup head had anything like this until vgmc noms. I love all the post-tonal and odd time stuff halfway thru. I've said a lot that even though being a live jazz vibraphonist/pianist used to be my main gig, it actually left me with very mixed feelings on jazz. and especially sour about stuff that's too traditional. mostly my taste in jazz is more modern and "out there" stuff, but this was a lot crazier than what I was expecting for something meant to convey this period! and the vibraphone bits are good and I still think its cool that the composer of this game is ALSO a vibraphonist since jazz vibraphonists are actually very rare, and is still my fav instrument to play and fav "real instrument" timbre. he certainly comes from a different school of thought on jazz from me, but I can tell his stuff is very genuine and skilled at providing exactly what he's trying to do, and this track in particular shows he's not afraid to push the boundaries of this stuff (his non-vgm stuff shows that even more clearly)

super mario 64 is definitely one of the most popular games that I actually rank very high. but I just like collectathons as a whole and sm64 approaches it in this dirty 90s way that I love. I've said before that collectathons are the genre of game that has the least correlation with my music taste---I can think of plenty of metroidvanias and mystlikes I'm deep in love with the music to. but collectathon music standing out to me in a positive way is a lot less common. sm64 tho? the music definitely had an influence in why I felt the game felt cool. mostly it's the 90s synth tones, including the oddly contrastng welcoming way the dx epiano just provided a bit of comfort in these often desolate spaces the game has. this track is sorta the culmination of that. it makes me feel happy. what a nice way to cap off this great game

I could gush all day about how perfect sakimoto's tonality sense is and this track isn't really an exception to that. but it also has the push of just making sounds I've never heard any other genesis ost make (and I have heard every one of them). unfiltered when played back from emulator like this there's lots of piercing high frequencies but I love them. both these organic alien flesh sounds And these hard metallic sounds. convey what this game is well. Epic Space Void Adventures into the vast mystery of the one part of the song that sounds like some specific tangerine dream song I forgot what it is

I can't wait to finally play the new zelda game Tears of the Kingdom today!! (proof that these votes have been made quite in advance) but really this sounds eerily like botw in the best way

Match 1 might be my favorite round 1 match in the contest.

Baking the Wondertart: Absolutely insane song. The violin to the vibes solos is a great way to start off. Then we've got crazy jazz band stuff playing very untraditional jazz band things. The ending with the organ is very cool as well. I like this song a lot.

Staff Roll: Very nice song with a nice melody and a great "end of a journey" vibe to it. This is a song that's good but not great to me though. Since I consider Wondertart great, it gets my vote.

The Void of Space: Not really a fan of the instrumentation of this one, especially the lead instrument that sounds like it's trying to be an e-guitar, but sounds very very fake. Melody is okay though.

Memories in the Mist: This one's quite nice. The main arpeggiated harp part is very relaxing and there's little details in the mix that make me appreciate it more, like the little piano elements and the heartfelt cello parts. Solid song.

Unused Song 2: Another very relaxing song. Dean Evans is really good at what he does, and this one's no exception. Good background loop, and the lead instruments throughout play some really cool things. Great song.

It's Pizza Time!: I like some of the e-guitar parts in this. But that's about it unfortunately. I'm still yet to hear a Pizza Tower song that I like. This focusing on a 2-phrase melody that repeats ad nauseam at varying tempos isn't something that I look for in music. I can see why some people like it, but it's not for me.

Pretty good day, despite the couple that I didn't like as much.

Wondertart is like, way better than any other Cuphead song I've heard. Doesn't have that old-timey feel I'm not so fond of. Pretty good stuff! Tough first match. Would probably like Wondertart better without nostalgia.

Void is nice for its presumed age, but it's from an era I don't care for that much. Memories of the Mist is nicer, but a bit low energy. Close match.

Unused Song 2 is nice in its way, just not really my style. Pizza Time's a lot more fun.

the flintstones on the box cover look so weird to me i don't get it. also i expected the song to just be the meme song because siiva but it was actually pretty good?!

holy shit Pizza Tower is ugly I am never going to play that game it is painful to look at. The song opens up pretty cool but then stalls for 30 seconds. Every phrase is repeated maybe 2 times too often.

holy fuck holy fucking fuck this song is just so cool. the mix of playful jazz and the menace of the orchestra. this is such an interesting, frenetic, high energy piece full of danger and delight. the move from section to section, the way the instruments POP. i really love the music in cuphead in general, but i love how maddigan isn't afraid to throw convention out the window and just go balls to the wall.

i feel like im too harsh on mario sometimes. it isn't a franchise i hate, or even dislike. it's just what the fuck is there to say. he's not the little guy. he doesn't need some white knights. but holy shit am i here for staff roll from sm64. even i am not completely immune to nostalgia. this song is so HAPPY. not nauseating or overly saccharine to my tastes. just so cute! what a strong and memorable melody... i think i still prefer wondertart for being more daring and interesting, but this was a tough match. my mind always imagines marios "thank you so much for a playing my game" line at the end. no, thank you, mareo.

these cool chime-y sounds in the intro make me happy. the heroic melody that lifts from around the 1:10 mark is nice too.

im happy to hear someone else get botw vibes from memories in the mist. i always thought that the little sounds in the intro (and sprinkled throughout) remind me of some of the tracks on that album. i love the mystery, the thought of trekking through the woods, your arms wet with mist and vision obscured .... sooo moody i love it.

speaking of moody ... here is fred [flinstone] ascending into the aether to become a god, as one commenter puts it. i feel like floating in space, or probably underwater. underwater might be more fitting, as dean evans is the absolute CHAD behind waterworld - diving. absolutely beautiful.

i like wario land 4 it is a very good game. fun and expressive pixel artwork and a brevity of unique power ups at your disposal oh wait we are talking about pizza time. this song has a lot of stuff i enjoy. time motifs are fun, and the HELLO THERE brings back memories of the aforementioned wl4. this song kind of loses me shortly after the 2 minute mark though. feels like a bit drags on too long. the big exceptions being the transistion parts with those TIME MOTIFS. the ending also feels a little anticlimactic for some reason? idk it just doesn't hit right.
