Yeah at first I thought it was an announcement it was coming to the SNES library on Switch, but then the light came out and swirled around the screen, and I was like "no.... REMAKE?!" and it totally was!

For some reason I didn't even think about the SNES Library, my mind immediately jumped to remake/sequel. As you can see I'm prone to setting myself up for disappointment but it paid off this time!

This is the first time a Nintendo direct actually gave me some excitement in a very long time. Looks fucking awesome

A bit extreme, but I was just going to bring up the topic of localization. We know some things will be different; it's just a matter of how much. Some enemy names will be gone, probably Yo'ster's Isle as well.

I really just hope that Peach's little secret remains in the game.

That's actually my #1 hope. The original game is still around, but I imagine the appeal of an old SNES game is limited for the younger generations.

I was actually just recently looking for streams or reacts to the game; there really aren't many. This will definitely change that.

It is, however, a game that has aged excellently (Paper Mario made a few refinements to the battle system, but the first game's still holds up very well), which makes it a prime candidate for giving it some shiny graphics and a modern rerelease. I probably won't pick it up because I can just play it on the Wii VC whenever I want, but I expect it'll do pretty well and hopefully convince Nintendo to do a little more with the Mario RPG idea than whatever they've been trying to do with Paper Mario.

Never played it. Might be worth a look.

100 jumps*

I gave up on my last playthrough. My highest count was 30 or 40-something.

I can't imagine doing 100 Super Jumps with even the slightest big of controller lag.

Naw, culex is a burger now and princess valentine has been replaced with a burrito due to too much sex appeal.

Worse yet, the timing changes at different periods of the Super Jumps. You have to find the proper distance from the enemy's hitbox, then a shorter distance above it, and then a shorter distance. So if you have either controller lag, mental lag, or a depth perception issue, then the whole thing becomes a mess.

So here's hoping they adjust how Super Jump works a wee bit for accessibility reasons.

Meanwhile, I'm curious what models of Link and Samus will appear during their respective cameos. xD

Nope, Valentina is definitely in it, but they removed the jiggle physics. It was a blink-and-you-miss it appearance in the trailer.

I heart this game, I will pay a reasonable amount for a remake.

I do wish they would let you pay less if you own the original somehow....I hate paying full price for games just for graphics upgrades. Prob wait till it's on sale because of that. I still have the original.

While I get the sentiment, that's unfortunately not really possible with games that old. With modern ones, sure, since you can detect if the game is already on the system (Super Luigi U did this, being cheaper to download as DLC if you already owned NSMBU than to purchase standalone), but there's pretty much no way to reliably verify who has what SNES carts.

The site existing doesn't mean the site was a thing back then. Just like it exists now but is basically NOT a thing, and hasn't been since shortly after the Gamespot merger Ceejus said would never happen.

Sure it does. If "it wasn't a thing" means "it didn't exist," the statement is wrong. If "it wasn't a thing" means "nobody cared that it existed," the statement is correct. The semantics of that phrase dictate everything about how correct the statement is.

From what I remember, you're also right. 30 jumps nets you a hat for Mario, and 100 jumps grants you the suit. It's been so long though, I might be mistaken.

30 gets you the Attack Scarf, which is Mario exclusive. IIRC, it boosts all stats (including giving the biggest speed boost in the game) and protects against instant death attacks. It's a really good accessory, especially for the speed boost.

100 gets you the Super Suit, which can be equipped by anyone. It's basically the Attack Scarf, but better - it boosts all stats (by as much or more than the Attack Scarf), completely protects against status effects, provides elemental guard, and protects against instant death. It's almost unarguably the best accessory in the game - only the Quartz Charm could contend for that title.

I wonder if they're keeping Ted Woolsey's script or if they're rewriting it. I assume rewriting, but the Woolsey script is a big part of what made the original so memorable.

I never played this as a kid. Looking forward to it!

I'm not sure how much of the charm came from him, and how much was in there originally. That said, I hope the Booster arc (from the tower to the wedding) is done justice since it's a prime example of a RPG's midway point done well. Like it made the game feel non-linear despite there being one way to go, because there were multiple points where you had more than one way to handle a situation, with only one of them really being skill-based.
