I wasn't aware "thoughts and prayers" was an atheist invention and not a way for the self-proclaimed religious to pretend to care without doing anything.

There's no real reason to respond to KanWan. He's not seriously engaging in any debate and it would be very hard for passive onlookers to believe he is.

What's scary is there are many genuine like his type that run around talking crazy. They think the nonesense they believe is facts and science and have not a clue what facts and science actually mean. My sister for example calls science a religion and believes in the illuminati.

There's a good possibility he's just that gone given the state of education in America.

But your right though. Not worth my time trying to convince someone that far gone.

I am generally annoyed that the church has gotten a free pass to abuse children for hundreds of years now pretty much.

And while religion is dying along with its elderly protection in high positions its still going to be a while before most of them are gone.

I know it can seem crazy to believe gods and magic are real - but don't make the mistake of attributing it to stupidity or mental illness.

Most religious people were groomed to believe from their church and family, they are made to fear Hell through psychological manipulation if they stop believing, and they also fear losing family and community if they leave the faith in many cases.

It's not mental illness, it's more often they are victims of trauma and abuse.

Just because I can take the topic back 100 posts, people using the Bible as a source for Jesus' beliefs and not just the gospels drives me up a wall. There's 45 books in the protestant Bible, more in the catholic Bible. 5 are the Torah, 4 are the gospels, and the rest are fanfiction, many of which are from Paul, included in the anthology by the council of Rome in 382, 3 centuries after the subject matter. That's more time than from now to the American revolution. By that point anything that could be purported to be attributable to Jesus was watered down and lost to the sands of time, the same way we have false quotes attributed to Lincoln.

Whar do you mean by their function? The function of a moral code is inherent to its nature as a moral code. We want to do good, so we follow a moral code that tells us what it is good

It's not a one size fits all thing. Christians still hold way, way too much institutional power and sway in the US, but it's much more socially OK to criticize them. Other religions don't have as much power, but socially criticizing them is often more likely to be seen by some people as phobic due to the same exact issue. I don't think coddling is the right word, but people walk on eggshells around certain issues because they don't want to be put in the same box as actual bigots.

I think Americans have faith in faith. Or at least a huge portion. And that what you were brought up as is unquestionable. Alternatives to that are not trusted. Even if they won't admit it.
