I hate Shrek and I hate how that song is affiliated with that movie. Watch the music video. Is shrek in it at all? No. It's the mystery men. An actual good movie

I'm sorry you guys had to hear me vent like that but my girlfriend is sick of me ranting about how much I hate shrek and I needed to get that off my chest

I think All Star is a quintessential turn of the millennium song along side Avril Lavigne's Skater Boy and The Backstreet Boy's I want it that Way.

BSB, now that's a quality band. I want it that way is a classic but it's kinda like Radiohead's Creep or Modest Mouse's Float On in the sense that it's a great song but it's overplayed and they have dozens of other songs that are just as good if not better. Their newest album, DNA, is wall to wall bangers.

One of my problems with shrek specifically has to do with your opinion that all star is a quintessential turn of the century tune. Shrek's humor and music selection is basically just pandering to the lowest common denominator. 'You people love Ricky Martin and The Matrix! Let's have some bullet time references that'll be dated next year and throw in a livin la vida loca dance number! The LCD will love that!'

I dunno: Shrek isn't my favorite movie but I miss the days when movies could just be simple comedies without worrying about which side of the partisan divide they were on. You could say that's 'lowest common denominator'...but I think the 'common' has significant value. There were some clever jokes in with the fart jokes, and Eddie Murphy was at his best there. Are a couple 2000-era references that big of a problem?

The Beatles...I can see not loving them, but I can't really seeing hating them...unless you enjoy hating popular things as you said.

Early Beatles kinda sucked, but I'm not sure how you can hate on Sgt. Peppers or their other late albums

Also, TC, do you hate all popular things on principle or do got just happen to hate most popular things?

That's kind of my point: they have such a varied body of work over the years it would be hard to find something you couldn't tolerate, if not like.

I do love me some peak Smash Mouth, although Walkin' on the Sun would be my more typical go-to.

This kind of, Shrek is great but I also started to get tired of hearing about it years ago when the "Shrek is life" memes and stuff started becoming popular, the movies are great and still hold up but I understand disliking it by association with obnoxious people.

I don't hate all popular things at all. Those are just two random examples. I'm by no means a contrarian. In fact most of the things I like are wildly popular.

My specific hatred for the Beatles is mostly based on the fact that people act so appalled that I dislike them, while acknowledging that most of their early work is inane drivel. Like 'they're the greatest band of all time, just ignore the first third of their discography'. Imo the later stuff isn't that much less inane. Hey Jude is like three minutes of nananas and people love it for some reason. I have a conspiracy theory that no one actually likes the Beatles, just boomers with superiority complexes berated their children into thinking they were God's gift to music and that opinion has been past down much like how abuse gets passed down generations. I'm being facetious obviously but yeah.

I mostly always hated Mike meyers. His humor is basically just playing various one note characters in the same movie and Scottish accent=funny. Also a lot of the jokes are really dated. I actually much prefer Shrek memes to the movies themselves

You could just enjoy the song and ignore the association with Shrek, because it wasn't written for that movie, and there's nothing specifically in the song itself that refers to it.

Personally, I'm more annoyed by "Holding Out for a Hero" being in Shrek 2, because that's an actual cover version I find worse than the original.

The Beatles...I can see not loving them, but I can't really seeing hating them...unless you enjoy hating popular things as you said.

If you're apathetic about the music, the fact that the band is overpraised to the moon and back (and also potentially overplayed) can make you kind of resent it by proxy. So something you'd otherwise be neutral about becomes something you dislike because other people won't shut up about it. That's not strictly hating something because it's popular, but its popularity does influence your opinion.

(Incidentally, this is why I've reached the point of disliking both Chrono Trigger and Earthbound, after years of the Internet endlessly sucking their digital cocks.)

Some people might also dislike Beatles songs because they find Lennon to be an utterly repugnant human being, and it colors how they perceive everything he was involved with. I've personally noticed I don't mind some of Paul, George, or even Ringo's solo stuff post-Beatles, but I either dislike or am apathetic about nearly every song they did together as a group (Yesterday is about the only song I kind of like... and maybe I Saw Her Standing There. Twist and Shout wasn't too bad, but that was just a cover).

I mean, fuck - I like most Monkees songs better than I like Beatles songs.

Hey Jude is like three minutes of nananas and people love it for some reason.

It makes it easier to sing along with in large groups, and that tends to manipulate people emotionally.

It's the same reason why large crowds tend to love Sweet Caroline BAH BAH BAH! SO GOOD! SO GOOD!.

I actually like the monkees better than the Beatles too lol. And yeah it's partially the popularity angle. I just find them incredibly mediocre so everyone forcefully telling me that they're the greatest but can't explain why because music taste is subjective is just irritating. 'OH but they inspired so many other bands'. I mean AIDS inspired Philadelphia but that doesn't mean that AIDS is good. And yes, John being a pretentious POS has a good bit to do with it. I do like George's solo stuff, Paul has amazing talent and I like some of his songs a lot but him writing one of the top three worst Christmas songs of all time and then converting to Judaism is the musical equivalent of farting in an elevator

I don't affiliate all star with shrek but others do. Mystery Men is such an underrated movie with an all star cast, and shrek is just.... shrek

I get that - I was mostly saying people don't usually get to "hate" for something like the Beatles without reacting to over the top fans...which sounds like what happened for you. For my part I can put up with inane lyrics if they come with catchy tunes, so the early stuff (and Jude/etc) work better for me than some...but I can see getting turned off by those. But their later/more modern rock has some good variety IMO.

Lennon-haters have an excuse also.

I don't hate Chrono Trigger, but I do get tired of other people liking it more than I do...if I were the sort to react to that I might flip. As is I think it's an alright, kinda cute, steady old-school RPG...but not anything that's deeply engaging.

Well now that's just plain wrong. It's not as good for independent listening because the whole song didn't get covered and any recordings of it are broken up by what's happening on-screen (which is just awkward when there's no screen), but the cover is definitely an improvement over the original.

I do like George's solo stuff

I like a couple of his 80s songs. But the main reason why he's essentially my favorite Beatle is because he was a huge Monty Python fan, and created a studio to distribute their films solely because he wanted to see Life of Brian. Which eventually led to the existence of Time Bandits.

And which, through somewhat circular means, also led to the creation of this song... which might be one of my top two favorite songs written by a Beatle:

I don't love a ton of Paul's stuff, but Live and Let Die is awesome... and he wrote my other top two favorite song written by a Beatle:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnFknaD9eWY

As an aside, I'm going to point out now that, as far as I can tell, there's only one Lennon-written song that I like at all - and it's this one:

Do you see what I did there? It's true, though. Fuck John.
