Vietnam has banned the upcoming Barbie film over a scene featuring a map depicting contested Chinese territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Vietnam is among a number of countries that contest China's claim to almost all of the South China Sea.

The film about the famous doll, which has already taken over social media, is due to release in cinemas on 21 July.

It is unclear which scene depicts what a senior official called the "offensive image" of China's nine-dash line.

The nine-dash line is used in Chinese maps of the South China Sea to show its territorial claims.

China claiming all the waters within the red striped area, which largely seems to have next to no association with mainland China.

It's not just Trump, a lot of people across the board were fear mongering insane nonsense about how it would steal our freedoms!
Hell, given how close 2016 was, Hillary's support of it vs Trump's opposition could have been one of the many individual issues that could have swung it.

China pays a ton of money to have movies have parts take place in China, and they are a huge market when they are finished, or atleast thats how it worked before covid with things like the first Walberg Transformers movie. And if you take money from China I am fairly certain the contracts require you to make them look like the good guy. I remember watching a pretty indepth video on it a few years ago.

I was hoping it would be banned because Harley Quinn does nude scenes, but it's a Barbie movie so that could end up being really weird and iffy too.

The TPP would have been good for us but trump and even a lot of progressives ruined that. Now all these countries are running to China.

The difference between all these claims is China is the one not deferring to international organizations to resolve the disputes and is claiming insane amounts of territory well outside their exclusive economic zone.
