Social media exists. That's why. MJ was globally famous without any of that. He was an anomaly that will never happen at that same kind of scale again

As an European, I just have to ask......Do they actually play freaking Taylor Swift songs in night clubs in the US? Nothing against Swift, but teenie bopper stuff isn't exactly what I would describe as club music.

You can't really understate the cultural phenomenon Michael Jackson was globally in the 80s and early 90s. He was probably the biggest celebrity ever up to that point and I don't think anyone's come close to surpassing him.

Ever heard of this thing called 'Halloween'?
It is simply not possible to live in a western country and not hear 'Thriller' at minimum a dozen times in October. Fuck off

so you're saying taylor swift is bigger because she can leverage social media properly

I think social media and the internet makes the concept of being a massive celebrity significantly tougher personally. People don't even listen to the same radio anymore.

Taylor Swifts fans are mainly girls of various ages. Michaels Jackson fans were both men and women of various ages. Taylor Swift has a handful of really catchy songs and is a really good business woman utilizing social media to keep herself popular.

Michael Jackson is on another level.

I remember when he released a new Music video it was appointment television everywhere that had it available. Everyone knew when and where it was debuting. The man was mobbed everywhere he went. I don't think any celebrity can be at that level he reached. It's not a slam on Swift or any current celebrity. I think the world has changed. We have so much more access to celebrities now. Granted most of it is curated PR bullshit, it's still more than you would back then. The lack of access created a mystique that's hard to match for celeb's now.

Overall comparing the middle of a career to a complete one is never going to be a fair comparison.

But I think some people in this topic are really ignorant to how popular Swift actually is.

Her tickets for her Eras tour went on sale last week in Australia. There were constant articles about it. Constant news stories on TV about it. My wife and I have been to every tour since Fearless. Easy to get multiple tickets for every previous tour.

This was different. I have never had such a hard time trying to buy something. I was unable to get a ticket at all. My wife was only able to get nosebleed seats. People in my office were trying. People everywhere seemed to be trying. About half the people we know werencompletely unsuccessful. Getting a PS5 at launch was piss easy in comparison. She added two new stadium shows and it still wasn't enough. People were paying premium rip off prices where it's bundled with other shit like hotels just so they could go.

I have outright never seen anything like it. It's not just here either. Apparently it's a competition between millions to get a ticket for her Singapore shows. Thousands of people who failed getting tickets in the US are rocking up to the carpark and listening to the show from there. A Canadian politician got upset the tour isn't going to Canada due to the tourism it brings.

There very much is an argument that MJ was unique for his era and can't be replicated. But Swift is very much the phenomenon for today. This is our generations top megastar and those same things are going to be said about her in the future.

It's not a bad album, but imo it was very "safe" and formulaic. The songs were catchy, yes, but idk that they had real staying power.
Personally I think Red was her strongest album but I do prefer her songs before she went full pop

so taylor has 3x as many listeners...sounds like that settles the argument

Lol it doesn't

Taylor wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for Michael tbh

He changed the entire game of pop music. Hes literally the guy that made albums a viable release strategy again.

He crossed music over the racial barriers and made it possible to completely reinvent yourself as an artist and remain relevant.

He dominated very type of career a musician could even have. Band, solo act, promotional, dancing, philanthropy... all of it

Maybe I'm just wording it poorly. All those songs are OK every now and then but get real old real quick for me. Good, but safe generic pop

Red, Sparks Fly, The Last Time, Love Story, Mine were much more lyrically complex and instrument heavy and walked the perfect line of country and pop.
