Consoles take years to design and release. So this shouldn't be news to anyone.

You guys realize that an "in-development Switch model" can mean literally anything, right? And it may not be interesting either, such as a minor invisible-to-the-consumer's-eye revision of the existing SKUs or something uninteresting like a "Switch with 4G"

Fucking lol both companies keep slipping out these secret insider details week after week but overall this entire legal saga basically revealed M$ has absolutely not changed at all since the early silicon valley days contrary to their whole "pro-consumer" PR branding.

Not surprised tho.

Switch has been out more than 6 years. They are definitely well into development of its successor by now.

Microsoft is acquiring Activision-Blizzard and there's been a huge legal case attempting to pause and/or outright stop it. Sony's been actively involved in the lawsuit. As the proceedings have been going on, a lot of "confidential" information has been coming out as they think the action would jeopardize the PlayStation brand and the industry as a whole.

This snippet (alongside other bits and pieces of unrelated) news and leaks confirms that a new Switch console is on the horizon and that MS is interested in bringing COD (a franchise they would theoretically own) to the platform, giving the implication that MS is perhaps singling out the PlayStation brand.

How is the existence of a Switch successor even newsworthy? We know there will be one at some point, ergo it's obviously in development.

Like we all know Sony's already working on the PS6 and Microsoft's working on the XSS/XSX successor as well.

They're already working on it yes but according to the docs they're estimated to be pretty far away still, 2026.

Nintendo being slightly less stingy and using Hall-effect sensors instead of aluminum-on-graphite, would solve the problem.

ITT: an "in development Switch model" does NOT mean V2, Lite, or OLED. It is a very different Switch that is the Switch's Successor regardless of Nintendo and industry analyst stating that the Switch broke the "traditional hardware cycle."

We already know the Switch is towards the end of its cycle, component manufacturers are more actively focusing on whatever the successor is, and we know the exact SoC it'll use.

The big question is if it'll be a straightforward successor or if Nintendo has some other kind of branding or hardware/control gimmick to differentiate it.

I think it will be like the iPhone models. If it was something like a "straightforward successor," it would be named as such. Similar to how they stated games such as Sonic Forces would be releasing on the "NX."

You don't know that, and so far Nintendo hasn't made any indication that they are deviating form their current strategy which is make stupid amounts of $$$$ margins by selling 2015-era hardware in 2023.

Just to clarify with this on the day Microsoft announced the acquisition of Activision they immediately went to Nintendo to sign a deal to get Call of Duty on there. This was later signed. It's probably pretty likely this was more about the successor than the Switch itself.

They also approached Sony but Sony don't want to make any agreements unless a list of demands like no COD on Game Pass, all Activision games are multiplat etc. are met so those discussions went nowhere.

It being called the Wii U is what confused a lot of people. They should literally just call it the "Nintendo switch 2" or call it "super Nintendo switch". I vote the SNS personally.
