Nothing wrong with grabbing coffee or ice cream or something small like that for a first date imo. If anything, Id rather not feel like Im being taken advantage of for a free meal at somewhere pricey.

Coffee would also be a hard no for me.

While I personally wouldn't do an ice cream date I'd probably do some sort of similar low key kind of first date, like coffee. I think ice cream would be the sort of childish and fun type of activity with someone you already have a rapport with.

Depends. It's currently sitting over 100 degrees where I live, so coffee can go fuck itself. I would be way more receptive to ice cream.

You dodged a bullet, and count your blessings she outed herself early as someone looking for a meal ticket or a clapping seal to impress her.

It's a first date. Absolutely no reason to go to somewhere spending a lot of money or anything extravagant on a first date.

I think it kind of just depends. If it's someone I've only exchanged a few sentences with on a dating app then I'd spring for something cheap and low-key like coffee or ice cream. If it's someone I've actually spent a bit more time actually talking to then I'd opt for the nice dinner.

Anyone who doesn't like going for some ice cream is not worth being acquainted with let alone becoming friends or even dating. The point of a first date is to break the ice (no pun intended), not rehearse a honeymoon.

Or maybe theyre just looking for something different to you? No need to be insulting.

I wouldn't suggest going for ice cream myself as a first date since some people might be more strict about their dietary preferences and not want to indulge in "junk food".

I don't think her refusal was coming from that direction though and was definitely more about feeling entitled to more.

Honestly, that whole exchange is odd to me. This feels more like she just wasn't feeling him and was waiting for an excuse to bail.

It doesn't have to be all or nothing though. I was on dating apps last year and all of my first dates were dinner dates. But it was casual dinner. Places like BJ's restaurant & brewhouse, Cheesecake Factory, Chili's, El Torito, etc. More expensive than coffee, but nothing breaking the bank.

Avoid anybody that uses the term "vibe"

First dates should be cheap and simple.

I'm not dictating where you should or should not go. In the end, you do you and whatever makes you happy.

For me however, I want nothing to do with a woman who has the attitude of, "impress me jester" on the first date. In the TCs case, if a coffee date or ice cream date isnt enough for this woman, my position would be, "thank you", saved us both some time. Especially when this woman most likely isn't going to be the type to volunteer to pay for her own date activities.

It's a first date, not an anniversary or something. A woman coming to a first date with an expectation of "you need to spend a certain amount on me, do certain things for me, or the date" is a bullet I'm happy to dodge early.

Ice cream sounds like an ideal date to me. Get a cool treat at an ice cream shop, then go out for dessert at a different ice cream shop. If any guy took me on a first date like that, I'd marry him right then and there.

I prefer something lowkey, so coffee or ice cream would be perfect. A date to me is more about getting to know who the other person is than what you're doing

No worries. I'm not saying that you, or anyone else in this topic, are trying to dictate where someone should have a first date. I just noticed that a lot of guys mention expensive restaurants when they explain why they don't do dinner on the first date. Like the past above yours (#41) jokingly mentions $400 a plate. But I don't think that kind of thing is the norm.

I would think the person offering ice cream was just looking for a friend, and she was absolutely right saying no if shes not looking for a buddy.
