The story and the acting is just like a group of kids playing secret agent during recess

Also the masks are super obvious, but I keep spotting random background characters that look like they're wearing masks or am I just seeing things?

Lol I recently found out that apparently fans of the show hated it because apparently they had jon Voight play the main character of the show and become a straight up villain twist betrayal and Tom cruise was the young hot new actor who they were peddling as the new mission impossible.

It would be like... if they made an Indiana Jones with the intent of passing the torch from Jones to a new younger guy, like maybe his son from a previous lover or something.

Just think that's funny because no one has heard of the show or its characters and everyone associates mission impossible with Tom cruise. Even when they tried to have Jeremy Renner take over it didn't work

I read that the only actor they could get from the original cast to show up at the premier, walked out because of how bad the movie treated the source material.

Yeah not unexpected considering.

To be fair the movies didn't start getting good until the 4th one. 3rd had a great performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman but also what felt like the longest Tom cruise running scene in history, I still remember nodding off during that part.

Then it had this weird resurgence where they became really good.

Haven't seen it in many many years, but I liked it as a kid/young teen. It has a certain feel to it that I like. Maybe it was Brian DePalma's direction. I remember seeing 2 and not caring for it at all because it was so different. Didn't see any more, but I hear so many good things. I'm sure I'll see them someday.

It took me like 3-5 watches before i even understood what was going on. The writing and pacing is garbage, didn't bother with any of the sequels

The N64 game was tolerable but even there the writing sucked ass (and i remember one of the "official" guidebooks was just as badly written, with a bunch of outright lies and references to stuff that was never in the game)

That's because what you're seeing on screen is Ethan putting together what actually happened. Jon Vought's character was lying.

That "feel" was the director's obsession with skewed camera angles, literally what felt like every scene besides the action had the camera slanted sideways while characters were talking to seem offkilter, was so weird to me as a teen. Don't know if it looks better now or worse.

Am I the only person here who still remembers that the first Mission Impossible movie was directed by Brian De Palma and that the theme song was made by U2?

that and Anthony Hopkins as the IMF director in the second movie.

Man alot has changed from the first two movies to the insane stuff in the later sequels.

the sequels now have two computer hackers that screw around with security which is redundant. Luther does a better job while Benji is a bit slow and the gadgets like the gloves break down because of Benji.

I really enjoyed the first Mission Impossible movie. It still holds up today, it's stupid fun.

I like the lady with the glasses, Luther is the best character in the series and the part where Tom Cruise goes "they're dead, they're DEAD!" is hilariously hammy.

Oh yeah I remember that. And since it's DePalma, there's probably many Hitchcock influenced shots as well.

It genuinely was quite a controversy at the time, haha. I remember people in DreamWatch magazine trying to rationalise that maybe Jim Phelps was a code name.

As a fan of the original series who watched the hell out of it, I love MI1. It's such a great movie on every level and if you can't enjoy it because it's not like the 60's series, you're stupid.

That's reminiscent of James bond. Goldeneye came out around the same time and also did a mole being a former agent who is disillusioned and just wants money. Except they didn't make it 007 himself, but rather his friend instead.

I feel like it'd moreso be like if a movie focused on a young, peppy hotshot who's out on his first mission with the Star Trek crew, letting the audience view the characters through an audience surrogate, until something goes massively wrong that destroys the Enterprise and most of the people on it. About half of the movie is this new character getting in Star Trek-esque mishaps on an alien planet ala Beyond, making contact with the locals in the hopes of getting a ride offworld or sending a message, until he finds another escape pod where he finds Kirk.

Then it turns out that Kirk rigged the Enterprise to explode, killing the entire crew including all of the important named characters who were supposedly his friends once upon a time, and to that end he sabotaged most of the escape pods so that no-one else could escape. The new main character got lucky, but now he's a loose end and Kirk needs him to die. The movie ends in a one-on-one battle between Kirk and the new guy, and the new guy wins.

The later movies are about the new guy and his own found family on their own spaceship. The set dressing is there, Vulcans and Klingons and an Enterprise and the uniforms, but it's Ryan Gosling as Timothy Renoir, a self-assured spaceship captain who Learns A Little More Every Day, and a cast of all-star replacements.
