Hell naw. I could easily afford to pay if I really wanted to eat Subway that much.

And they're only picking one "Subway" for the prize; the rest are SOL. What cheapskates.

i looked at the rules, and if there's some stipulation that you need to keep your name changed for x period of time, or indefinitely, then it's not stated there

https://www.subwaynamechange.com/rules

but this is what you get

ONE (1) PRIZE: A check or prepaid card for $750 to reimburse winner for the cost of winner legally changing first name to Subway and $50,000 worth of Subway gift cards that may be used to buy Subway food for the rest of winners life, fulfilled at one time. Approximate Retail Value (ARV): $50,750.

so it's "well we think you only need $50,000 for a lifetime of our food" when it's like "one thing every week" or something

If we assume $10/meal for easy math and another 50 years of life, that works out to 100 meals per year. While not strictly a guarantee of Subway whenever you want it for the rest of your life, that's still Subway 2-3 times a week, and I don't think I'd want more than that.

Though, saying that, Subway is just being cheap. 50 years of 700 $10 meals per year instead (twice per day) would cost ~$350,000, which is a trivial difference for a company of Subway's size and would easily be made up by the extra publicity this campaign will offer. That approach would, however, end up costing more in the long run because of inflation, but even so it wouldn't be a problem.

The sub I like is expensive, not to mention the other stuff I get on it and with it. I think its about $20 each time I go If I went everyday, Id only have enough for just under 7 years While I dont think Id go everyday, Id like to have the option to go everyday for more than 7 if I changed my name for it But Im guessing it might be different for the average person That said, Im not sure Id call someone who changed their name to subway the average person, so

Wouldn't you have to pay taxes on that? And what if you lose the gift cards?

If it was actually free subway for life, I would consider it. Already a subway meal that cost me $6-7 a few years ago costs 12-15 now. With inflation I wouldn't have to worry about food.

You would have to pay taxes on it if given it all at once like they do, would be better if they sent you gift cards each year or something.

Since it's gift cards they would work with promotional deals as well, like buy one get one free, or 5$ specials etc...so in theory you could get more that way.

Factoring in inflation etc, it would probably only be Subway for life, even eating only a few subs a week, if you are already past retirement age. Also probably only people that desperate for food and some why to survive on $1000 a month would be willing to do this deal.

If you were retired with no income other than SSI, you could in theory split the 50k over 3 years, so 16.6k a year, minus 13k= only 2.6k taxable a year (at 10%), so only about $260 a year or $800 total.

Not a horrid deal for someone in that situation and there are a ton of people in that situation.

That being said it costs anywhere from $100-250 to change your name (depends on the state), so to change it, and then change it back it could be about $500, and only 1 person who changes their name wins. Quite likely more than 100 people will try, which means more then $50,000 will be spent changing names........you would be better off having everyone just put in the money it costs to change your name into a pool, draw one person at random and then win it all (or better yet, have 1 person win per 100 people who enter). You have a 1% chance to win 50k for just a $500 enterance fee.

Subway doesn't directly profit from the name changes, but it's publicity for a cheap (for them) amount. Most importantly you almost definately would have a better chance with a pool of money and if done right it wouldn't be taxed as well (could be considered a gift from the other people, which means no taxing as long as you have not exceeded the gift limit (250k or something like that).

Basically this doesn't make sense for anyone to do at all, unless there was a maximum of 100 people who could enter and you were determined to win BEFORE changing your name (so only the winner changes their name at all).

And I say this from Canada, because impossibly Subway is actually worse here. You get even less choices.
