Quick searches lead me to see...

Switch since 3/31/2023 - 125,600,000
Nintendo DS overall - 154,020,000
Playstation 2 overall - 155-158 million

If it's got another year of sales to itself, and if they do a price drop with the launch of the Switch 2, I think it'll clear the PS2.

The fact that Nintendo pulled the plug on the DS when it was feasibly within like six months of beating the PS2 tells me they don't care, meaning they likely won't take that into consideration when determining how long to extend the life of the Switch. I'm not optimistic.

The being said, if PS2 > Switch > DS happens, given the insanely small window, it would make me think they are for some reason doing it on purpose.
Or that they wanted to beat their own record, and they don't acknowledge other companies as being competition.

Technically its currently PS2>DS>Switch>Game Boy>PS4.

Anyway I went with Switch>PS2 but it will be very tight. A price cut (which they have not done yet) could potentially put them over I think. Switch looks like it will be at 140 million by the end of this year, which theoretically gives it a year to keep selling before its successor comes out. Of course if the successor is 2025 it definitely does it.

Isn't this because that figure counts Game Boy Color as a new model rather than a brand new console?

Yeah but those revisions always count as the same, DSi is DS, PS4 Pro is PS4 and so on. GBC was never considered its own system.

So similar to how PS4 was second best selling console once it was clear of Wii while ignoring the handhelds.

I predict it will finish with more sales than it has now.

I'll laugh if literally from the time you made this post, a brand new Switch is never sold again.

Nintendo knew I only bought one Switch, but I asked them if I could count it as two. They said only if I request it the right way.

So I said 1-2-Switch.

I think Nintendo can do it.

Main two points:

**Tears of the Kingdom lived up to the hype and sold over eighteen million copies since May.
**The Mario movie was a huge hit, and now this winter we have both SMRPG being remade and Mario Wonder coming out. That game with Princess Peach is next year too, which may reach new demographics.

Smaller-scale, we also see Pikmin 4 outselling all other Pikmin games combined in Japan.

These are software arguments for selling hardware that's 6+ years old to people who don't already have it so this won't magically mean new records...but Nintendo has some interesting momentum going on with no new system announced yet.

Just saw this for an update:

https://www.gematsu.com/2023/08/switch-worldwide-sales-top-129-53-million-the-legend-of-zelda-tears-of-the-kingdom-tops-18-51-million#:~:
text=Nintendo%20Switch%20has%20sold%20129.53,in%20its%20latest%20earnings%20release.

[link gap thanks to GameFAQs]

Switch worldwide sales top 129.53 million, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom tops 18.51 million

"A total of 3.91 million Switch hardware and 52.2 million software were sold during the three months ended June 30, 2023."

Seven more quarters at this rate (March 31st in 2025) to beat the DS and be in that 155-158-million range I saw for the PS2...those are probably high hopes to keep it selling that steadily. No new movie releases coming soon that I'm aware of either, plus LoZ:TotK already got probably more than half of its sales done unless it comfortably outsells BotW. We'll have to see what they do to push hardware sales going forward...

...but also, now there are two Mario games coming up on the holiday season, and these are the first major Mario game releases since the Mario movie came out -- a new platformer and remaking an old RPG. Princess Peach also gets her own game next year. There's a synergy with the movie there that could help sell hardware. This previous quarter sold 860,000 more units than the quarter before it too, so it's got some upward momentum. Last, while the next Nintendo system is likely to be announced within a year, the Switch will still be on sale for well over seven quarters from now so it doesn't have to keep this increased rate up like I mentioned earlier.

Think we got a race on our hands.

Spring is typically a smaller quarter for Switch sales, though that's not the case this time thanks to Tears of the Kingdom. Fall is typically their biggest quarter, thanks to Christmas - they did 8 million last year, for example, and 11 million the previous two years.

This holiday will likely tell us whether or not it happens. It will almost certainly be its last holiday season. By which I mean, as a current gen console. Even if it is still produced through the 2024 holiday season, sales will be almost negligible next to the successor's, especially if it's backwards compatible.
