Board 8 > What music contest would you prefer part 2: Mega Man, Pokemon, Smash, or Sonic?

Sorry to zelda and mario and dk and ff and castlevania and ys and tales and kh and touhou and kirby and dq and square and trails and atelier and pso and bemani and megaten fans. The first topic was more of a brainstorm and to gauge interest levels, these series had the most support (MM received a ton of write-ins) so I've narrowed it down to 4 to choose between, giving MM a fair shot.

Please feel free to rank them in preferential order so I get a better sense of what has wider appeal.

Smash > Mega Man > Sonic >> Pokmon

Mega Man is the only one of the four that I have any real affinity for at all.

Sonic would be fun enough but that series has as many meme tracks as it does anything else, and I always personally feel like the quality of a contest here is inversely proportional to the amount of meme content that's included. Smash Bros gets most of its best stuff from other series, and that's fine, but it'd feel like an uber-discount VGMC to me. Pokemon, outside of a few standout tracks that immediately come to mind, has never been a series in which I've felt like the OST was a particular strength.

This is why it could become a good contest if the bracket size was large enough. Because then there would be a proportionally lower amount of "the usuals" than most contests, leaving more room for everything else (including the obscure spinoff stuff). On a smaller bracket then Pokemon would be extremely boring though.

A couple of additional questions: if MM/Poke/Sonic win, would you rather music solely from the video games be allowed, or any from the franchise as a whole (ie anime, movies etc)? Or even fan arrangements? And for Smash, would you prefer only arrangements made specifically for Smash, or would you include all songs that appear in the game even if they're unaltered from their original form?

The bracket would be no bigger than 128, maybe 64 if interest seemed lower but 128 was a good size for FF I think.

smash should absolutely be only "smash" music, not any music that was in a smash game

smash has genre diversity, but its ultimately only 5 games. I think all the others would be a lot more dynamic.

To answer your question, please only include music from their games. For Smash, please exclude music placed into Smash unaltered.

I love Mega Man & Sonic music, so I'd be excited about them. I'm less familiar with Pokemon, but I'd be interested in hearing any particularly deep cuts and would try to follow along to vote anyway. I don't know that I've ever liked any Smash-exclusive songs... I'd stick around for the first round to give it a chance, but I'm skeptical that I'd enjoy it. (Though lots of other people would and my music tastes are rarely compatible with anyone, so I have a suspicion that it would be the best option anyway.)

It easily has the smallest pool so the results are probably going to be the most obvious. Ult Gangplank Galleon, Brawl Bramble Blast and Meta Knight's Revenge, Melee Mother 2, etc. Things are going to be a lot less predictable with the games that have thousands of songs to choose from.

I mean I think every series here has obvious favorites

Eh, the VGMC audience has different tastes than the board at large. I guess it would depend on the overlap.

A Smash contest sounds insanely boring lol. Also I vouch for the entire series being eligible. With Pokmon especially there's worlds of content to pick from.

really don't like the idea of pokemon or smash of these since they would be thoroughly unsatisfying, being heavily biased towards songs from specific entries at present (and in smash's case just being too... i dunno, i don't think a contest of arrangements is very healthy)

mega man would be also a bit... well, i mean, if you don't think about how it'd play out it seems interesting, but if you do you'd basically have to concede it's most likely to just see something like mm2 wily coming out on top over, let's say a handful of mmx songs and then the rest

sonic is all over the place in a pretty good way i think so i guess it gets my pick here

I have been tracking the preferential ballots! Of course NFUN has put a stop to this now (and made the overall tally very tight), and he's also one of the few who haven't put Smash at 1st or 4th.

I don't mind official music of other media, but fan stuff just makes it something completely different for me. And for Smash I also would prefer just unaltered tracks, but I don't think it's a dealbreaker to make it all fair game.

Would not be opposed to any, but with Mega Man I would most likely be spectating heavily.

I'm okay with official work from other media, but not okay with fan remixes or Smash songs that are just ports despite my personal Smash playlist including a lot of songs that are ports lol

God there's so many good Mega Man songs. It's the only one that could realistically fill a 128-song bracket with mostly bangers
