I shared a car with my older sister although I never really drove it. Didn't get my own car until college when my parents bought a 96 camry from my mom's friend's mom who couldn't drive anymore.

I bought my first car when I was like 19. It was a piece of shit that cost 500$ and couldn't go faster than about 50~. That said, for what it cost it did the job for a good while.

The idea of my parents buying me one, at least back then, is hilarious.

1994 Ford Escort GT. My parents got it for my oldest sister as a 16th birthday gift, then it got passed down to my next sister, then finally to me.

That thing was surprisingly fun as hell to drive. Had a Miata engine in it IIRC, though it was FWD.

You cant get your licence until youre 17 where I grew up. By that point I had already been living completely independently of my parents for over a year. They never bought me a car, and I didnt have one until I was in my twenties because I was broke.

Funnily enough, I don't have one now because I'm loaded.

Didn't get my license until 21, but I got a heavily used '05 Chrysler Town and Country from my uncle.

It had many issues and I frequently had to take it in to the mechanic. After about a year, I sold it and bought a 2015 Ford Escape from my mom for half off. Still driving that Ford to this day, it's been serving me well so far.

When I turned 16 I got my grandmothers 77 thunderbird that had been sitting in a freestanding garage somewhere, after one of her friends died and left her an 80s Oldsmobile.

This was in 2001/2.

Started with a '00 Chrysler Seabring that my mother handed down to me my junior year of high school, drove it from 2007-2012. The first thing below came with the car, the others happened around '11/'12 (not in order)

  • It came with a bad serpentine belt so the thing would shut down at random intersections or in slow traffic and be hell to start back up
  • The driver's side window came offtrack so if I had it all the way up the top would actually hit the top of the chassis
  • The wind yanked the same door open hard one day and snapped the door stop (the thing that keeps the door from opening too much) and would prevent the door from closing unless it was moved
  • I...kind of drove it through a flood in mid-2012 where it started steaming at the top of a hill after the flood. Still worked, though I drove it through water practically up to the bottom of the doors
  • It had a sputtering issue that might've come from the above, not sure
  • The CD player shit the bed one day and would be really uncooperative when inserting/ejecting CDs, often requiring like 30 attempts. At that point I gave up on it once I got what was in it out and just used the radio

It was eventually sold to a cousin for $500 in 2012 when I bought my mother's '07 Jetta (the car she bought when I was in high school) for $4,000. He totaled the Seabring but he's doing much better nowadays. Actually just traded the Jetta in back at the start of May for the '23 Camry I drive now.
