Not a fan of tutorials and all that slow handholding shit but it gets pretty good after all that. Not a fan of input-bonuses though but it's not mandatory. Def has traces of Chrono Trigger and SNES RPGs here and there.

Just finished it this morning, it was pretty good. A little easy for the most part, especially once you have those 3 attacks that can delay the enemy's turn, but it was really enjoyable and definitely scratched that JRPG itch.

Great game. I unlocked all the endings and obtained all of the achievements except the one that requires a New Game+ playthrough. Amazing soundtrack and visuals, but the combat was easy and the characters are a bit dull and boring.

Yeah it is pretty easy and straightforward but whether that's a detriment or not is left to whoever's feeling like taking on a breezy throwback RPG for once these days.

Been playing it. I only just got to Mesa Island and I'm feeling kinda mixed. The art and music are fantastic of course, and the writing is pretty good, but there's just something kinda dull about it that's hard to fully articulate. It's like it feels like it's a just series of levels in a way that similar good RPGs don't. But I don't just mean it's linear, because I don't mind linear, it's something about the pacing and the generally formulaic structure. Even though it has the exploration and side content and the story, it doesn't feel like its more than its core gameplay loop in a way that the best classic RPGs do. Like I said, I can't really explain it very well. Maybe it'll pick up later.

I played it some more yesterday for a few hours and I finally got to the Sea of Stars and HOLY SHIT I was NOT expecting that incredible transition for the journey there. I just got the Living Glass before stopping and want to play some more when I get the chance. The boss fight before it actually gave me my first KO of the game.

If you mainline it from there probably about 3 or 4 hours. If you wanna get the true ending you can add a few more depending on how many collectables you already have

Chained Echoes is a little divisive because of the Overheat mechanic. You have a bar when fighting enemies that goes up and down depending on how you fight, and if you're out of range you take more damage, but if you're in the sweet spot you do more. Many people hated the mechanic, but there's a difficult slider to make it more generous iirc.

I liked Chained Echoes a lot. It's story punched pretty hard when it wanted to, and imo more often than SoS, but I wasn't as attached the characters. CE's characters hardly had any development, but the story went to some insane places. By comparison, SoS is more of a jaunty trip that slowly ramps up the excitement.

I like both. They both do things strongly and in their own way. Neither really captures the story feel of Chrono Trigger though. Echoes is closer to Final Fantasy, and SoS is closer to Chrono Cross.

I think if I had to choose one over the over. I'd choose Sea of Stars.

I didn't mind overdrive THAT much in Chained Echoes and thought it was interesting, but it could be frustrating and lead to some "pick your poison" situations where you either heal and put yourself in the red or don't heal to not lower your defense but have lower HP.

What I REALLY didn't like though was the mech combat, and the story started going in awkward directions.

I was liking Chained Echoes quite a bit during its first part, but found myself losing interesting and slogging to finish it from the second part onward.

As for Sea of Stars, I'm still in the middle of. So far its been pretty good and will hopefully not fall off (I've gotten as far as defeating the storm captain and getting a boat)

I liked the over drive mechanic it was used in some very creative ways in Chained Echoes too. Thought most of the characters were great and had good development.

Once I beat the main story I was done with it though I really do feel like a lot of the secret battles and other things I really just left behind and should go back to someday. I almost beat one if them I think hah

I haven't played Sea of Stars, maybe someday.

See what I mean? lol. I personally liked the Overdrive mechanic because it gave battles a sense of rhythm. Though it's definitely a divisive mechanic. Thankfully if you don't like it you can just make it super generous and then almost completely ignore the mechanic; since iirc that's the kind of game that offers several optional sliders instead of a single unified difficulty slide.

So far, while I'm not done with Sea of Stars, I prefer Chained Echoes much more. I didn't mind the Overdrive feature that much. And it wasn't too hard to master it. I don't think it was explained well enough in the game, maybe?

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/7/0/AAE14lAAE3Ui.jpg

At any rate, while I 100%'d Chained Echoes, I doubt I'll do the same in Sea of Stars. It looks like it might need a NG+ to get everything done, but I'm trying not to spoil myself, so I don't know if that's true. But I started it after Googling and hearing that there was nothing really missable. That's how it should always be, in my opinion.

The only thing you need NG+ for is a trophy involving fighting bosses, and from what I understand you don't even need to complete the entire second run to unlock it.

the immortal alchemist joins the party but he days right from the start he can't help them fight the dwellers cause if he does it will bring the fleshmancer back to their dimension. So the cast are explained why he can't help and then when they fight a dweller the cast get mad he doesn't help. And forcibly use his weapon against the dweller bringing the fleshmancer back who then kills garl. It's just such a stupid chain of events only caused by the characters becoming idiots for a scene that it took me out of the plot. I'll return eventually but man did that moment bug me

  • I understand, and I felt that the Alchemist could have done a better job explaining why he couldn't help and it was odd that he didn't even scold Sera after she threw the flask. Some really awesome things start happening soon, so I hope you'll be able to get back to the game soon and can enjoy it.

He doesn't actually explain anything he just says he can't fight dwellers because of rules. He doesn't say what the rules are.

Just got the ability to fly around and went to a couple optional puzzle areas and can't figure them out on my own. One involves pushing some blocks around and the other involves raising and lowering water, and it seems like for both I'm missing something. I can't align the blocks correctly for the first one and it seems I need at least one more box for the second. I'll likely have to look up their solutions.

I figured out the water one after taking a little break. I totally didn't notice the left side of the map. Didn't figure out the other one yet, but I did find two others that I could solve. Kinda eager to finish the game so I can start looking things up, so I might just go to the final area tomorrow morning.
