Made a topic a few weeks back about it, and I know a few were interested in the news.

Puncayshun got a 1:37:34 with carpetless, to be the first ever runner to do it. The former world record, without carpetless was done by Weegee, who got a 1:37:35. As a one-minute time-saving trick, you can see that this is still far from the potential that carpetless can achieve, but someone finally was able to not choke a world-record capable run to carpetless or post-carpetless. First world record for puncay in 5 years (and I was told that record was beaten in less than 24 hours by cheese).

Puncay is a great runner, and got a 1:37 without carpetless right before the RTA-strat was discovered, so I wouldn't say this is a case of it being a Mickey Mouse record since Puncay is legit (and was the original Siglemic "rival" who originally beat Sig's World Record all them years back).

That's speedrunning in its truest form though. You're the guy for a while and then a new strat shows up and someone quickly beats you by one second.

Super Mario 64 speedrunning. If you truly don't understand:

  • speedrunning: the act of accomplishing a goal in a video-game in the fastest time possible (usually that act being beating the game under certain criteria)
  • 120 star speedrunning: Beating Super Mario 64 as fast as you can after collecting all 120 stars (no hacks/modifications to the game of course. Additionally, the most popular version to play on for SM64 is the N64 version. Technically VC is faster, but SM64 generally is more purist)
  • carpetless: a trick that skips needing to use the carpet in Rainbow Ride (last stage of the game) to get a star that typically requires said carpet. This trick saves a minute

Not up yet on YT, you'll have to go to his twitch channel (which I linked the specific video of in the previous post). He just got it a few hours ago, so very recent.

I'll try to give a deeper explanation for you fam.

In Super Mario 64, there's a star called "The Big House in the Sky." From playing SM64, you may remember this as the star you have to ride the flying carpet for a long time to get on top of a random castle-looking building in Rainbow Ride. In speedrunning, this represents an auto-scroller basically, as in, runners can't speed up the carpet, and therefore, can't do any action of their own to make it that much faster, beyond getting to the carpet as fast as possible.

There's a trick, which involves multiple glitchy wallkicks off the big house, that can get you on top of it without using the carpet. If you pull off this trick with minimal delays, it can save up to a minute over having to use the carpet. For a game like Super Mario 64, where a trick that saves 1 second in the speedrun is considered big news, even in 120-star (which is essentially the 100% category of the game), a one-minute timesave has completely broken the possibilities for times that can be achieved.

I feel like we'll have to see a 1:36 before any carpetless docs are made.

The funny thing is, Liam and Weegee were capable of pulling off a 1:36 without carpetless already (still needing really good runs, of course). I feel extremely bad for Liam, though, as he might be the most anti-clutch runner I have ever seen. Dude had a world-record pace run after carpetless in Bowser in the Sky yesterday with 14 seconds to spare, and choked it yet again.

The dude has choked so many wr runs to bowser throws that it's just unbelievable he was able to clutch out the first ever 1:37 at one point. He has had like 5 world-record capable runs in Rainbow Ride die in the past few weeks alone.

All of the top runners are insanely good now. The first real WR scramble in a while and it could be anyone. Liam is a lot more focused and Suigi doesn't seem to need any focus.

That'd be cool, but I feel like he's hit a mental wall. Carpetless also seems to have made him a lot more depressed lately with streams having a pretty gloom feeling near the end. Ever since carpetless, he has had trouble putting together even meh runs. I think he's felt so much pressure, and not even getting the chance to do carpetless on a good run is starting to break him.

This is honestly the most down I've seen Simply since his Mario Madness streams back in March of 2021.

Speedrunning is definitely very fun to watch. It's really enjoyable to see people just nail these cool-looking strats, and there's a more innocent vibe to speedrunning compared to other competitive gaming where speedrunning is more about your own personal journey. Liam is about to start his stream, so if you are looking to see some speedruns live, I would check out twitch.tv/liam

There are a ton of runners, though, so if you can find one that clicks for you; speedrunning is a really cool experience to have as even just a viewer.

I've never seen any streaming so its all just new to me and I kinda want to sub for the guy you posted originally just because I was getting annoyed at the haters in the comments and I want to support him for dealing with that crap lol. I'm still in the middle of watching. I can't imagine being able to hold a dialogue and read while doing all of that...that takes a lot of skill and dedication to a craft.

I don't recall him ever "retiring." I'm sure he's had a few breaks from the game, though. I legit think Shift is the only person who can actually handle speedrunning every day, years-straight, without feeling the need to take a break.

In a way, I think the runners need the chat. Speedrunning can get really boring naturally as you are doing the same thing over and over, if you get stuck in the beginning. Without it, I feel like the burn out would be insane.

All in all, I think this is the Year of Puncay. Got his first 1:37, then had a pb shortly after, followed up with a world record. Not to mention, he won PACE (speedrunning competition) earlier in the year as he's always been a solid competition runner. It's been all highs for puncay this year. He's been playing really well too lately. He's definitely capable of getting a low 1:37, maybe even a high 1:36 with the way he's been going.

GreenSuigi has been practicing the stars/routes that aren't already included in 70 star for the past few months as he gets ready to make the big jump to 120-star. It's been quite a bit of time, but he's close to being wrapped up with his individual star practice, in which he will move on to his next goals of segment rta runs. This, I'm sure will still take a bit of time, but it's one step closer to Suigi doing 120-star where it feels end times will come.

Before that, though, Weegee has been practicing SM64 again after taking about a month off because of the MoistCritikal speedrun challenge (he won btw), and he is able to pick up categories again real fast, so he might get WR before the end of the year quite realistically. I would have to say Weegee was basically considered the "Suigi" of SM64 before Suigi started Suiging everything in that he dominated his categories and seems to just have this unnatural skill in the game. Arguably, he's the 2nd best runner in the game right now in world-record runs (not in competition runs, though, I feel he's too much of a perfectionist for his own good in PACE/tournament formats), and with Suigi being literal months behind, Weegee easily has the 2nd most potential in the category at this moment.

Liam is basically right there, though, but he just hasn't been able to put the run together in years. Only being 11 seconds faster since his first 1:37 a couple years ago, despite pushing his sob down, his paces down, and nabbing so many best pace ever out of x stage is honestly a little disappointing. Out of everyone, he's probably got the widest gap in his potential to actual pb. Even if he gets a run that is WR pace after carpetless, I think there's a mental block that prevents him from getting three clean bowser throws on WR pace (he lost a run a couple nights ago to throws once again). I feel like he honestly needs to be up by 30 seconds going into the final stage to World Record at this point.

Puncay has gotten so many low 1:38's and 1:37's this year alone that, as I mentioned, with that consistency, it would not be shocking for him to just keep getting pb's past the current WR he just set.

Then you got Japanese runners, Marlene and Karin who have choked quite a few WR-capable runs in Rainbow Ride that you just feel like if they keep getting one run a day in Rainbow Ride, one has to convert eventually.
