They recycle the metals, of course, but the plastics are just dumped, even when you pay for the service.

Apparently, the most recycled thing is the automobile, to no ones surprise.

Its a psychological scam. The point is to first of all put psychological pressure on the individual into thinking that the environment is their responsibilty, and problems in the environment amount to them not doing enough. It also eases people's concerns about the environment to see things like recycling publicly.

What Have They Done to the Rain

Just a little rain, falling all around
The grass lifts its head to the heavenly sound

Just a little rain, just a little rain
What have they done to the rain?

Just a little boy standing in the rain
The gentle rain that falls for years

And the grass is gone, the boy disappears
And rain keeps falling, like helpless tears

And what have they done to the rain?

Just a little breeze, out of the sky
The leaves nod their head as the breeze blows by

Just a little breeze with, some smoke in its eye.

What have they done to the rain?

Just a little boy standing in the rain
The gentle rain that falls for years

And the grass is gone, the boy disappears
And rain keeps falling like helpless tears
And what have they done to the rain
What have they done to the rain

things being "recycleable" might just be a scam since that just means it's possible. Doesn't say anything about the amount of effort required and whether or not it will actually be done.

things made of recycled materials are less of a scam since it's basically proof that the recycling part actually happened

If done properly, no. The more a society reuses and redistributes its used material, the more it becomes a circular economy, meaning it will be less dependent on finite resources and less damage will be done to the environment and ecosystems, which human societies rely on as well.

It requires a lot of people to be properly educated and motivated on the subject though, as well as governments giving companies incentives to make this possible.
With right-wing populism being on the rise however, my hopes for this to be effective aren't great.

Recycling as a whole is misinformation. People will argue plastics aren't recyclable, economically or physically, and hence recycling is a scam. Truth is we never really even tried to recycle plastics. We just decided it was easier to throw it out, or ship it to another country. The latter, lead to huge misinformation about what countries pollute the most.

Recycling works environmentally, but not economically, so some will say it is a scam.

If recycling is done right, no.

The problem is many places process recycles in a bad way. Things people think is recyclable, isn't actually recyclable. A lot of people wishcycling. A lot of people don't understand just how important it is for recycling to be sorted as that shit has to be processed by someone.

I only touched the surface here, but it's not necessarily a scam. The problem is the way we process recycling that it mind as well be a scam in many parts of the country.

Plastic recycling is a little bit of a scam yes. TLDR is plastic industry knew plastic products were horrifically polluting the world and so they heavily funded campaigns into plastic recycling so that they could make it seem like the problem is consumers' problems to fix and not theirs. And that it was okay for them to continue churning out tons of plastic.

"Plastic" is not a single material, and different plastics require different facilities to break them down. In a country as large as the US, most areas are not going to have a local facility that can break down anything other than the two most common plastics (the type in water bottles and the type in milk jugs), if that.

From there, you also have to consider that many services just dump the whole bin as waste if it's not sorted properly, without most people knowing how to sort plastics.

Aluminum recycling is pretty real everywhere, to my knowledge. Paper recycling I know less about.

The Netherlands does this too, but its what happens after thats the scam. Trash and recycling companies cannot deal with the way stuff is separated and even say to just throw everything in the trash so they can recycle stuff themselves. Local governments forced the separated recycling issue though. The bags with recyclables just go straight to landfills or are illegally shipped to China or Thailand in containers hidden between others.

I used to run a recycling center.

-Aluminium recycling is not a scam. The scam part is that bauxite ore often comes from slave labor.

-Glass, depends. Most of my center's glass got shipped to China and it had to be hand sorted by color. The shipping is expensive and causes pollution.

-Plastic is mostly a scam. Only #1 PET has much of a chance and it has limited shelf life.

How we do in Sweden:
Aluminium and plastic bottles with drinkable liquids, like coca cola or water, got a Container-deposit legislation. Basically we pay 10 cent extra per bottle. Every big food store got a recycle machine where we put our used bottles, and it gives us those 10 cents back.
The garbage truck comes once every two weeks and we pay them based on the weight of our garbage.
We got nearby recycle stations, which are basically just metallic containers, where we throw glass, paper, metall, plastic, cardboard, etc.
If we have much to throw away, we go to the landfill, which is basically a bigger recycle station with bigger containers. They also take stuff like wood, batteries, electric devices, etc, that normal recycle stations doesnt.

Depends where you are in the world.

Here in NZ we've got in most cities:
  • Paper, glass and aluminium - generally it's agreed that these are a good idea. It does all get recycled
  • Plastics with grade 1, 2 or 5 (PET, HDPE or PP) - because these are the ones we can actually make sure get recycled
Most other plastic grades are being slowly banned from use in food or consumer goods:

As a Dutchman, I'm kind of curious about this. Do you have a source?

I do know that several cities have done away with the plastic trash deposits and have it automatically seperated from the general waste afterwards by waste processing companies such as this one:
