So what's your card of the year?

To clarify: card of the year for us among cards we used in 2023 or among cards released in 2023? Because my answer is different for both of those.

If we're talking about cards we used in 2023, then I'd definitely say Branded Fusion. It came out in Master Duel in late 2022, but aside from my #1 favorite deck Sky Strikers (but I didn't want to pick from that deck because Engage or Kagari would have definitely been my card of the year for 2022 and I wanted to mix things up) the most fun I had playing in 2023 was with various Branded variants, particularly Branded Tearlaments.

If we're only talking about cards that were released in 2023, then it's a tougher decision for me, but I think I'll go with Tearlaments Kitkallos. I had some fun with her in early 2023's Tear Zero format with multiple Tearlaments decks, and I'm still having a lot of fun her with my aforementioned Branded Tear deck even though I've dismantled all of my other Tear decks. If Master Duel had banned Kitkallos like the TCG/OCG did instead of the left-field Merrli ban, then my Branded Tear deck wouldn't even exist right now because it needs Kitkallos to function. I also really enjoyed Sprights (meaning Spright Elf is a contender), Labrynth (meaning Lady Labrynth of the Silver Castle is a contender), Mikanko (meaning Ohime the Manifested Mikanko is a contender), and Vanquish Soul (meaning Vanquish Soul Razen is a contender) this year, plus Triple Tactics Thrust has been a really fun generic option, but I think I'll stick with Kitkallos.

Hit Master rank for the first time ever with Purrely today, who carried me all the way from silver rank.

Facing all meta decks I lost most against Labs, followed by mathmech, and although I usually beat VS they usually gave me many sweaty. Especially since most of them used Kurikara.

I really hope their support will be the very next selection pack since this is the funnest deck Ive ever played in ygo.

The new Yubel support looks interesting and I might try it when it comes to Master Duel. The fact that it can search Super Polymerization sounds scary.

I've never been one to focus on anime nostalgia when building decks. Even when I played IRL (both as a kid in the very early days and a second stint around 2011-2014) or my short time playing Duel Links, I played the cards and decks that interested me based on their aesthetics and play style. I never cared about Dark Magician, Blue-Eyes, Heroes, Stardust, or any of the major anime archetypes. If I played a card or archetype that was in the anime, it wasn't because of the anime. It was because the card or archetype itself interested me with its aesthetics and/or play style.

That being said, there is one single card that I have nostalgia for and that I would build a deck around if they ever made modern viable support for it, and that's Jinzo. It's gotten later support, but it's too awful to ever make a remotely playable deck around.

I don't have 2024 gems. This is sad

It did not I only got 2 URs out of 30 packs.

But then again, I seem to have astronomically bad luck with this game so maybe it does lol

Hearing you guys talking about getting screwed by bundles or being low on gems always makes me feel reassured in my decision to play on two separate accounts and therefore have two sources of gem income. My main account currently has over 15000 gems and over 1400 UR materials, while my side account has over 11000 gems and and over 1000 UR materials, and I have a total of 25 decks combined between the two.

So yeah, I'm set for a while. I'm just sitting here waiting for Centurion, the second batch of Rescue Ace support, and the Sky Striker alt arts.

Gold Pride confirmed for Jan 10th.

It's a pretty big buff to PUNKs, but Gold Prides actually do something that I'm already doing with my current build of PUNKs, aka use PUNKs as a massive rank 3 engine rather than as a synchro centric engine.

It's a bit weird and the win con is Gold Pride stuff more than the AOE Sharakusai bounce and hand traps. Personally, I dunno if it'll be stronger than my UDF build, because that board is stronger than Gold Pride centric stuff, mostly because when Gold Pride PUNKs were actually a good rogue deck, they didn't have access to M-X Saber Invoker, which... esp with Drident legal, which TCG also didn't have

Tried playing with two accounts back then and I simply cannot.

So I go back to one and just face the reality of the lack of gems (bad decision notwithstanding).

Thats a lot of work frankly, and With how easy it is to grind gems having multiple accounts becomes more and meaningless as time passes and youre able to consolidate all the decks you want into a single account.

It's not really that much work for me. I only play long enough each day to complete dailies on both accounts, which is less than an hour a day and sometimes closer to a half an hour if things go well. If I actually wanted to grind to Diamond/Master, I would definitely need to pick one account and stick to it, but I honestly have no reason to.

It's also much easier if you keep one account on mobile and one on PC or whatever else you usually play MD on. Personally though, I think it's possible to run most decks you want on a single F2P account, just not immediately upon every set. You really have to maximize event rewards and such but it is possible.

After skipping the first two days of the month to let the list of daily missions build up like I usually do, my first duel of the month was very interesting.

I decided to play Marincess to clear the Fusion/Pend/Link summon mission because this deck can link climb easily. I went first, but bricked badly and had to settle for an Aqua Argonaut without Battle Ocean's protection because I had to do the "Coral Anemone revive Splash Mage" route and couldn't make Crystal Heart along the way. Then my opponent did a bunch of Blackwing summons, destroyed my Battle Ocean and then my Aqua Argonaut (after which I used Coral Anemone's effect to get Battle Ocean back from the GY) and did a lot of damage but left me with a little under half my LP left. On the crackback, I got the perfect top-deck in Blue Tang, link-climbed up into a Great Bubble Reef with Battle Ocean's protection active, and swung over their Full Armor Master.

At this point, they had no answers to remove my huge 4000+ ATK tower that was immune to card effects, but that didn't mean they had no chance to win. Great Bubble Reef has a mandatory "each time a monster(s) is banished face-up: this card gains 600 ATK for each, until the end of this turn" effect. My opponent made Black-Winged Assault Dragon, then started scrambling, doing a bunch of summons, and banishing monsters in the process. They were trying to use Assault Dragon's "Each time your opponent activates a monster effect... inflict 700 damage to your opponent." effect to try and burn me to death with my own mandatory effect, and they almost did it, but they lost due to the time limit.

This is probably how Marik felt in that one duel against Joey in the Battle City arc of the original anime, where Joey 100% had him beat if he only had a little more time. My ass was cooked in this duel, but I got saved by the bell. We take those.

So the future of PUNKs, as they figured out in the Gold Pride era in TCG/OCG, is that they're a small synchro engine that doubles as a rank 3 xyz spam deck. Because people like me or Tennousu or Tasuku play the hell out of the deck and know of its flexible extension and versatility, thank god I didn't listen to the random on Twitter who said PUNKs do one thing all the time and nothing else, we're always gonna find new ways to play the deck

But I just saw MBT's vid on Speedroid Kash being shockingly good, and what it actually is is similar to the adaptation we're making with PUNKs. One guy who's constantly been innovating Speedroids realized that Speedroids can easily spam out lvl 3 tuners and lvl 7 synchros. So rather than just doing xenophobic Speedroids, which is what most of that community had been doing, now due to this one guy, they're using that in tandem with Kash to do both Xyz and Synchro stuff.

Almost literally what modern PUNKs would be doing, except modern PUNKs' ability to lvl 8 synchro is Spiderman/Thor style catastrophic hanging on of two opposing ends of a grand canyon cleavage style carrying done by a single copy of Deer Note.

In the future, PUNKs will most likely try to use Speedroids to spam out a few more rank 3s than intended I think. Unlimited Terrortop is probably the most exciting thing that's gonna happen soon, and they also synergize with the Psychic lvl 3 guys that special summon themselves

Wishin Jan 10th arrived sooner. Terrortop 3 Taketomborg 3 with the wind GPs are gonna be the future I think. Not sure where I'm gonna find the space to put all that though tbf

Its not worth it as a fun deck. The cards have been power crept. Nothing wrong to use them but they arent the scourge they once were.

Somebody topped some tourney with 3 Tidal and Tearlaments and 3 Super Sea Mare. It's a fairly consistent way to summon out Kit.

Also I've been studying up GP. You need 3 Leon, 2 Carrie, 1 lvl 5 ball guy, 1 cont. spell, 1 trap that summons one random 3, so that's 8 main deck. For ED, you need 1 Carrie, and 1 Ball. I think the lvl 6 synchro can be good too but I dunno.

It's fairly lightweight as a sub-engine. For the rest, you add 3 Terrortop and 1 Taketomborg, that's 4. 12 non-PUNK, 15-16 main PUNK (3 Shara, 3 Ze Amin, 1 Wa, 1 Spider, 3 of each lvl 8s, 1 field, 1 trap). You add 1 Zoo Whiptail for the Invoker line. Maxx C package is 9 cards, so that's 29 + 9 = 38. Leaves 2 for whatever hand traps and other answers. Nib will probably be pretty good, same for Evenly. (EDIT: I totally forgot about 2 E-tele... so no extra space, gotta go in raw with Maxx C package and hope for luck I guess)

It's less hand trap capable than my last build, but it can basically make the same board as before. Now maybe you don't go Leviair and go Carrie instead to search the cont. spell for the main deck Carrie. But you make Invoker with the MD Carrie, and the trap Carrie searches will be 2 more interactions. You send ball with Xyz Carrie, and you reveal 3 Leons, summon a Leon who will summon a Ball from GY, who can then fuse into the fusion Ball and do an interruptible 2 monster steal

It's really funny and cute, but I do wonder if my current PUNK build + Terrortop might actually perform better. It's really hard to say. I wish the GP trap was better. The biggest problem is that you gotta reveal 3 cards to activate the trap, which you might get screwed by your draws.

Edit: I honestly go with 43 cards. Not fun playing with constrained deck unless you're desperate with with draws like me with Ancient Warriors.

Yeah though I do think unless it's a deck full of 1 card full combos somehow, keeping it 40 is pretty important. I just want Jan 10th to arrive so I can test this freaking deck already. I don't even have gems but I'm willing to splurge for GP, screw it. Not like I enjoy any of the meta decks

Having 2 PUNKs or 1 Ze Amin in your opener is just so important for being able to play around most disruptions. I don't think Droll is that much of a problem per se, but UDF + Whiptail'd Drident is Droll resistant. There's a big Nib weakness to the deck that Kashtiras can solve but they're too inconsistent for me, personally. There's not enough space to put in 3 Ascended of Thunder but it's also an option as it also helps GP stay below threshold.

New selection and secret packs were just officially announced: Superheavy Samurai (which we already knew through a pre-hit on the banlist), Gold Pride, Nemleria, and some Visas stuff in the selection pack, Dinomorphia and Transcendosauros in the secret pack. The only one of these that interests me at all is Nemleria, which won't be a meta threat but might be a fun deck to screw around with in the lower ranks.

Because I can just build Nemleria on my side account if I want to play it and my main account had gems in the gift box that were about to expire, I decided to blow some of them on the Sky Striker secret pack to see if I could pull any new glossy/royal cards. Sadly, I didn't pull any glossy/royal Sky Striker cards, but I did pull a glossy Geomathmech Final Sigma (which my Swordsoul deck can sometimes summon so I threw it in there) and a second glossy Triple Tactics Thrust.

Yeah, I haven't dismantled all the UR or SR from when I pulled Mannadium beforehand. 2 of those 8 Riums are glossy though and we like our blings.

Except I would genuinely recommend to him to try the Leviair to revive a 3 combo, and frankly I'm not actually sure how much the GP stuff is doing for him. It's also very heavily weak to Droll, which I heard was gonna be a dominating hand trap in the near future

I'm really starting to think the Terrortop + Psychic Wheeler package is superior to running GP

I forgot how it goes, but it's more expensive slot-wise compared to Leviair > Invoker > Whiptail, which only needs Whiptail in main deck and makes more than UDF.

So I got fed up with going 2nd way too often and looked up a solid going second deck. Im finally a sky striker player. It was also a deck I had no idea how It worked. So now I know how to stop them.

Was tired of endlessly long branded grind games. I love the deck and its very powerful but in plat people dont know when to give up. I still shut them down but it makes it harder to climb when Im playing such long games.

Did have a fun game today where someone got out Icejade Gymir while I had rageki in hand. Thankfully I was playing vanquish souls. Was able to build a board with two Vs and dust devil in hand. Wiped the board even after it used its effect because I read the critical detailIcejade only works on face up monsters. I know most effects turn off when face down but I didnt want to get hosed by a lingering effect.

Its all good man. I really like the deck and wanted something that people arent prepared for right now. Im so sick of Kash.

Ive found that the more decks I play the better Ive become. So I dont Ash the wrong thing or know where the choke points are. I shut down a Kash player by realizing I needed to Imperm a Riseheart so it couldnt go into Ariseheart thus stranding them on a really bad board.

Yeah Sky Strikers take some other level of resource management to close out games a turn or two faster and risklessly. I just don't think it's worth the hassle at the moment. They needed like 1 more point of interaction I think. I'm wondering how good Artifact Lancea is for them, but that's just a musing.

Yeah but the deck is already strapped for space. You can go 2 Whiptail but Drident is just a nice bonus more than anything. Having Whiptail prevents people from running it over b4 an interaction because it'll get banished. Having the pop is always nice and will be relevant turn 1 too once R-Aceists take over.

I wish I knew the math on the fly, but 40 vs 41 card, the chance of you drawing a one of 3 unsearchable card goes down massively.
