Crayon Shin-Chan, Funimation dubbed.

It's like Japanese Dennis the Menace on crack.

Prison School. It's about the trials and tribulations of 5 men trying to fight a corrupt system and coming out on top. It's very inspiring.

Neon Genesis Evangelion for the existentialism depression, and deep dive into the human condition of the main cast (through the lense of Jungian psychology) that you come to care deeply for. But despite all that, there's hope at the end.

Also giant robot fights and a few other anime tropes on the side.

Rainbow.

It's about a group of young boys in a detention center having to grow up in a post-WW2 Japan.

Madoka Magica

It's a very important Magical Girl Anime. It's also great because you'll know whether or not you're going to like it after 3 episodes so the cost of entry is very low. I'm being vague about what it's actually about on purpose as it's one of those shows you should go into as blind as possible.

"Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai", or "The World God Only Knows"

Premise: Dating sim supreme master and adamant reality rejecter Keima Katsuragi accidentally forms a demonic contract to woo ~real girls~ in order to save them from possession by evil spirits. Hilarity ensues~

This is my very favorite anime, and spurred a years-long binge through literally hundreds of new series. Actually, if you erased my memories of this series and made me watch it for the first time again, I probably wouldn't care for it. But it's got lots of cute girls, and Keima's determination to reject reality and live in the gaming world leads to amusing antics~

Outlaw Star

Once you watch the opening theme and get pumped up, you're gonna be hooked.

Dutch-German-Japanese anime which revolves mostly about parallels for Germanys invasion of The Netherlands in WW2, the past and recent Dutch colonial activities, the role of the monarchy, and some fantasy elements added in. Tackles racism, borders, constructed families, race mixing and many other issues. Unironically deep.

Also a personal favorite of mine.

Highly sugguest the sub, though. The dub is so bad that the VA who did Spike for Cowboy Bebop couldn't save the show as the titular character.

Babylon

A prosecutor discovers a government conspiracy regarding the right to euthanasia.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes, the 80s OVA version. It's a philosophical anime about a long running war between democratic rebels and an autocratic empire. What makes it stand out from similar plot hooks is that you view the war through both side of the conflict in equal measure, and the central thematic conflict of the story is that of a benevolent dictator vs a corrupt democracy.

Yeah this. If you just want to watch something fun then:

1.) Senki Zessh Symphogear (Discotek)
Singing idols in power armor, powered by music, fighting against alien menace. Basically magical girl + music. Has a really good OST imho.

2.) Keijo!!!!!!!! (Crunchyroll)
It's a water sport. Girls tries to knock each other off of a floating platform using only their breast and ass. The kicker? This is a serious business!

Gatling Butt, Rising Breast Uppercut, Hypnotic Boob, Vacuum Ass Cannon, Afterimage Butt Attack, and god knows how many other special moves there!

I'm not joking, this is a sport anime with fights and plot. No nudity or anything tasteless, just a sheer ridiculousness of it all.

The Vision of Escaflowne
People pilot medieval steampunk robots

I'll recommend Revue Starlight for mine. It's about a group of theater girls who take part in an underground theater fight club run by a mysterious talking giraffe. It has fantastic music and fight scenes, great story and writing, it's only 12 episodes and a sequel movie so it's not a super long time investment, and it's an original anime (AKA not an adaptation of a manga or light novel) so it won't end with a "fuck you go read the source material" tease at the end. Both the TV anime and the sequel movie are available for streaming on HiDive.

I also second the other mentions of Outlaw Star, Madoka Magica, and Symphogear.

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku

Adult otaku who manage to act normal in an office environment yet still find time for friendships and their hobbies

D-Frag the English Dub. About a guy who everybody in school labeled a thug but he's really not. He gets dragged in the conflict between both Gaming Clubs in school. It's extremely hilarious.

Cute, funny, good scenery, and will make you want to live in rural Japan

Kaiji.
There's a bunch of anime and shows doing the whole protag gets involved in high risk games thing but Kaiji's the only one I like. Unique art style, narrator's fun even if you don't speak Japanese, villains are actual fuckers instead of generic wannabe cool guys on the opposing side. Luck weighs heavily, sometimes Kaiji wins, sometimes he really doesn't.

I'd also say Baccano and Yu Yu Hakusho but that's a whole bunch of typing.

i am probably going to check out Outlaw Star later tonight and maybe Yu Yu Hakusho. I remember watching them on toonami back in the day but i don't actually remember anything about them at all. I recognize several of the titles mentioned here and many are on my watchlist already, but here's what i've seen out of the recommendations:

oreimo - i actually liked the first season and s2 until it got really weird <_< seeing weeb shit in anime amuses me. and the intro song is a total banger

neon genesis evangelion - started several times long ago, never made it more than halfway if that. i wanna give it another shot but idk if the time is right lol

madoka magica - i remember really liking this but also, sad? why am i afraid to watch it again

gundam - i grew up w/ gundam but have been out of touch with it for a very long time. every once in a while i will catch an episode though and am slowly getting through 0079 and G Gundam

anyway, some of these sound great, i am particularly looking forward to checking out "The World God Only Knows" and "Wotakoi"

If youre gonna watch Gundam at any point, watch Gundam Unicorn. Its the best.
