It was a good night. A short story, but one of those losers is a Republican names Edward Durr who scores a big upset unseating the NJ Senate President years ago. Edward Durr was later revealed to have a ton of racist social media history.

Anyway, he lost decisively to a Democrat tonight.

WASHINGTON (AP) Democrats had plenty of good news to celebrate in Tuesdays off-year elections and more evidence that they can win races centered on the national debate over abortion.

Abortion rights supporters won an Ohio ballot measure and the Democratic governor of beet-red Kentucky held onto his office by campaigning on reproductive rights and painting his opponent as extremist. A Democrat won an open seat on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court after campaigning on his pledge to uphold abortion rights. And Democrats took full control of the Virginia statehouse, blocking Republicans from being able to pass new abortion restrictions and delivering a defeat to Gov. Glenn Youngkin that may douse any buzz about a late entry into the GOP presidential primary.

The victories won't be enough to make Democrats feel secure heading into next years presidential election. The off-year elections have major implications in all of those states and provide a snapshot of American politics heading into 2024. But two big names Joe Biden and Donald Trump weren't on the ballot this time. How Americans view them will be a huge factor in shaping next year's race.

Here are some key results from Tuesdays voting.

Democrats notched two early wins Tuesday night in Kentucky and Ohio, states that voted for Trump in 2020. In both states, abortion was the main campaign issue.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear was reelected in a state that Trump had won by 26 percentage points. Beshear had criticized the abortion views of his Republican challenger, Attorney General Daniel Cameron, in debates and television ads. One Beshear ad featured a woman who miscarried after being raped by her stepfather at age 12 expressing disbelief at Cameron's opposition to abortion in cases of rape and incest.

In Ohio, a ballot measure preserving abortion rights passed in a state that Trump won by eight percentage points in 2020. Republicans had already tried to derail the measure by calling an unusual August referendum to make it harder to pass ballot measures, an initiative that was roundly rejected by Ohio voters.

Later Tuesday, Dan McCaffery won an open seat on Pennsylvania's Supreme Court after positioning himself as a defender of abortion rights. And in Virginia, Democrats held the state Senate and flipped control of the Virginia House of Delegates from the GOP.

The outcomes suggest a transformed political landscape since a conservative majority of the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a federal right to an abortion last year. Abortion rights measures have passed in a plethora of states as some other Republican-run states have instituted new bans on the procedure.

Abortion rights may not be a potent enough issue to swing an election on its own. Several GOP governors who supported new bans cruised to reelection last year, including Ohios Mike DeWine, Floridas Ron DeSantis and Texas Greg Abbott.

But abortion was the key issue across the country on Tuesday. And that should worry Republicans in competitive races next year.

Produce ads of Trump saying women should be prosecuted for getting an abortion and when he took credit for overturning Roe via his SCOTUS picks and run them on a loop... you can also include the time when Mike Lee said that he was going to pull up Social Security "by the roots" as a bonus.

I actually think last night, and the previous 2 cycles show that if the GOP is allowed to scare people with abstractions ("drag queens taking kids", "runaway inflation", "illegals", etc.) they can whip up a red wave.

But if people are allowed to focus on actual policy and rights (health care - including abortion, the right to toke in the privacy of your home, to love the way you love), then Dems prevail.

It also shows that there's a cottage industry of pundits, shitposters and think tanks that are successful at demonizing Biden, but not predicting electoral outcomes.

OK, reading them argue about making voting day a holiday and somehow it's not because poor people don't work so it's easier for them to vote than working people made my brain melt a little bit.

The best thing about Republicans losing the abortion issue is they won't learn. The Republicans will just keep pushing.

I just skimmed this post but it seems like the GOP was pretty well damaged by this one. I was born and raised in Ohio and I know the 2 big ones of abortion and MJ did won.

Yep, but really they don't have much choice in the matter. If they stop this push to restrict or banned abortion. The Pro-Lifers and Evangelicals will stop voting Republicans.

If they try to take a middle ground position on the abortion by banning abortion after, let's say 13 weeks. The Pro-Lifers and Evangelicals likely will stop voting Republican over time, as they're not satisfied until abortion is completely banned. So that all fetuses have a right to life. These people are fucked in the head and the Republican politicians desperately need their vote to hold onto their seats and the party's fleeting power.

Great night in NJ. Expansions on both the Senate and Assembly. The truck driver who took out Steve Sweeney is gone. Only one nutso on the local BOE (he was unfortunately re-elected) but the others running didn't make it so he'll have no chance to do any real harm. I think the only reason he was re-elected was because NJ law prevents party affiliations from BOE members being listed on the ballot because it's an "apolitical" position.

Murmurs are that some Republicans want to try to overturn Issue 1 with another ballot measure next November.

As someone who wants Sherrod Brown and Joe Biden reelected I would certainly feel owned if the GOP put abortion on the ballot in Ohio again.

These people are authoritarian by nature. They see it as upsetting the natural order when the lower classes get to vote/exercise power, especially when people vote for things that give the lower classes more power and autonomy. They see the point of our government as a way to hand the better people the lion's share of power in society so they can lead us down the right path without the rest of us fighting and they see it as our system failing anytime that doesn't happen.

CNN is really humping that poll hard with nothing in the same ballpark to compare against. They've failed to explain why it isn't an outlier or how it differs from their usually SSRS (Mountain something now) or ORC polls they do.

Inability to adapt to a changing environment is a core trait of conservativism.

Abortion is the kryptonite.

Many in the pro-life liked the idea of the overturn, but when reality hit, they realized abortion laws can affect them. Now that abortion laws can be done in action and not just words, people don't want to support such candidates.

A bit disappointed in my area, but I live in NC so wasn't expecting much different.

Glad to see across the board, though, that the country voted mostly blue.
