It took From Software until Sekiro to win the Game of the Year award. Gaming critics alternated between giving it to Naughty Dog and Insert Popular WRPG for years before finally throwing in the towel.

Although notably enough, Demon Souls won Gamespot's personal GotY award over Uncharted 2 back in the day, which is a decision that has aged like fine wine.

Oh man Defiled Amygdala was a pain. A total war of attrition, that one. But agreed that Lady Maria is a 10/10 fight. And I just love that you go right from Living Failures straight into another boss. Orphan of Kos is a 10/10 boss too. Hope the pizza cutter stagger helped!

I love the DLC, but I'm not quite sure I'd call it best DLC of all time material. Echoes of the Eye...yes.

Nothing was ever going to beat Witcher 3 except for alternate universe actually completed MGSV (although that would've taken longer anyway). I say this as someone who has never played any Witcher. Oddly enough since then WRPGs have done really badly, and if we count CRPGs separately that doesn't look to change any time soon.

But Naughty Dog? FromSoft never released the same year as a TLOU (initial) release. I think you might be overestimating how well anything else besides Uncharted 2 specifically has done for them in the accolades department.

I do have to admit I'm pretty shocked anyone actually did that, though. DeS was very overlooked at the time.

Witcher 3 was just that damn popular I guess

Side note - playing Lies of P now, and this shit rules. Outside of a spotty localization I think it's the first Soulslike that's worthy of standing beside the From Soft games. Probably not best to play it right after Bloodborne, but for me it's scratching that itch.

Between P and this topic, once I get that platinum I'm doing another bloodborne run for sure.

Not even close. Overwatch cleaned up that year. It's hard to imagine that anymore but it was all anyone was talking about that year.

And yeah I was absolutely saying TLOU2 did. By "initial" I meant non-remasters.

Turkey leg is so much fun. A completely oddball weapon, there is nothing quite like it anywhere else.

I'm partial to the Kos Parasite. It's not very good but it's hilarious.

Huh, definitely way more GotY sources than I realized. Cursory inspection it does seem like "big publications" broke to Overwatch and smaller places went to U4, but your point still stands.

That said, DS3 was especially snubbed. I don't know how much you can blame any one other game for that. You remove everything above it and decent chance Inside wins bigger. I don't really get it.

Funnily, for my first DLC playthrough I looked up DLC weapons without looking up their source to pick something to build around and picked that.

From got shut out pretty badly until Sekiro. Even then, despite Sekiro winning the overall Game of the Year award, it only got 3rd in total awards across publications, losing to Death Stranding and RE2Make.

Then Elden Ring happened and the dam broke. Elden Ring actually holds the clear record for the most consensus GotY pick across all websites, winning 73% of outlets. Witcher 3 and Breath of the Wild 'only' got 57%.

Who knew all you had to do to win GOTY was get GRRM to write "try finger, but hole" all over your world?

If you mean for the Trophy you can ignore the DLC for that.

Also if you're missing the Beast Claw you may not be done with Chalices.

PLATINUM TROPHY GET

What a ride. 10/10 game obviously. I don't usually care about trophies, but for Fromsoft games i'm willing to make a once in a lifetime exception. I like how the platinums in these games are a good way to see everything, rather than be a bunch of meaningless tasks

Good job. And yeah the Platinum Trophy in Bloodborne is PARTICULARLY easy to get. I never go out of my way in any game to try and unlock trophies, and Bloodborne is the only Platinum that I've ever gotten as a result. You basically just get it by doing everything that you could reasonably be expected to do if you genuinely love playing the game.

I wouldn't call it easy lol. Those chalice dungeons almost drove me to madness. Luckily i had mariataylor there to show me the way

Btw ive been watching bloodborne lore videos nonstop, and its insane. Crazy how Bloodborne probably has the best combat AND best lore of any video game. This game is truly something special

I think Maria means "easy" just in the sense of they're tied to actual content. Even the Dark Souls games have stuff around Covenants which either requires PvP (that may possibly be very sparse like the dragon covenant in DS1), grinding drops from enemies., or even worse a ton of NG+ cycles.

yeah like in the souls games there's no way anyone is going to convince me to go and collect every single spell and every single miracle in the game. especially how you need to grind really stupid requirements for several of them. but in bloodborne, there's like... less than a dozen hunter tools to collect. and you will get all of them if you just explore every area of the game. same with the weapons. a few of them do at least require you to play a certain quest in full, but if you're beating the game three times anyway, chances are you're going to do all of the quests you missed in your first playthrough in the second playthrough. and unlike, some of the souls games which REQUIRE you to play through multiple NG cycles to get all of the quest rewards, you can get ALL of the bloodborne quest rewards in a single playthrough if you really want.

That makes me sad, because i kinda wanted to go back and platinum all the Fromsoft games. How is the Sekiro platinum?

Ive had time to let Bloodborne digest, and I think Elden Ring is still my #1. Bloodborne is a close second tho. Dark Souls 1 at #3.

Bloodborne is basically perfect, so it comes down to personal preference and nitpicks. The chalice dungeons are mostly to blame, but ERs sense of exploration and discovery is ultimately what wins me over. Bloodbornes maps were a bit too mazelike and i just felt it was too easy to miss stuff (even by fromsoft standards)

And who tf decided gestures can be done with motion controls lol. I would be mashing x to grab an item, an enemy would run up, id sit up off the couch, which would make my controller move, and now suddenly my character is waving hello

Elden Ring is probably my #1 favorite game of all time, so it was gonna be a tall order either way, but its still pretty insane that Bloodborne is probably gonna smash the rest of my top 10 somehow. Bloodborne is just SO GOOD. Top tier video game combat, lore and horror. Ive never been cut in half by a placenta before. That wasnt something i knew i needed.

So yeah thanks everyone for helping with this topic. Ive still never played Dark Souls II, and I never finished Sekiro, so ill probably do a playthrough topic on one of those next (but it might be a while before i get around to them because the elden ring dlc is gonna take priority lol)

IIRC Sekiro requires a NG+ run because the all bosses trophy needs it to be all on one file and one of the 4 ending paths has bosses not on the other 3 so at minimum you'd have to NG+ once. But I think that's the only real complication and would probably put it at less troublesome than some of the Dark Souls ones.

The one for learning/mastering every skill was a bit of a pain as it required a lot of farming from what I recall.

Having just played both for the first time in the last few months. I kind of liked Lies of P even more than Bloodborne.

I like Bloodborne a whole lot, but I don't think it's anywhere near Elden Ring.

I dunno. I'd put Lies of P above DS2 and maybe DS3 (didnt do the dlc). Not Sekiro (though I did like the characters in LoP more).

Either way, Lies of P is pretty great.

They only need to be on one file for the gauntlets, which aren't tied to Trophies. However, there is an upgrade material you have to do NG+ to get the necessary amount and it can't be on that one ending path.

You can turn that setting off, though I'm not 100% sure that's just for DS3 and Elden Ring (on PS4/5) and not Bloodborne.

P is better than ds3 to for sure but that's just because that's the worst of them all.

Not sure how I'd rate it against the good soulsbornes. But it is very good.

While i would love for P to have real co-op or pvp, and they could easily adjust the lore to make it thematically sensible, P is still one of the best single player souls like experiences I've had the pleasure of playing. My primary complaint about ds3 is how same-y a lot of the weapons felt, which is where P excels.
