You're driving along one day when suddenly you've got to pee real bad. You're trying to hold it in but there's no sign of any upcoming toilet.

So you pull over in the middle of no where and take a piss. When you do, you look down and see a filthy sack in the dirt, clumsily stuffed full of money with some blood stains on the bills. It's gotta be at least $50,000.

It's clear from the dirt on the bills and sack that the money has been lying there for some time. You look around and there's no one for miles in any direction

The money is covered in blood?

I call the police and let them deal with it. I don't even touch the fucking bag.

It has dried blood stains on some of the bills. Covered in blood is probably hyperbole.

I guess it depends on how you define "Covered"

I mean this is almost certainally a potential violent crime regardless of the bloodstains.

Hard to think of noble reasons why a sack full of money is left in the dirt at the side of the road.

Nope, that is an immediate 911 call. Even if I could use that money, I ain't fuckin' with evidence from a violent crime.

I don't touch it so I don't get my fingerprints all over it. Also don't move it, as the location could be a key bit of evidence for whatever potential crime investigation is going to happen. Call the cops and wait for them to arrive.

Anybody talking about taking the money, or even just a portion of it, is downright stupid.

My spare tire is in my garage. So I will stash it where it should go in my trunk. I wouldn't tell anyone.

Wash it all, burn the bag and only spend it on cash only small purchases.

It's worth the risk imo.

Well actually finding $50k on the road and keeping it without any issues is still a more realistic scenario than a zombie apocalypse lasting longer than a month tops. Most of the zombies wouldn't last a day because their bodies can't support them.

Man this one is dependent on a lot of things.

I'd like to take the money, but if I do, I'm leaving no evidence. Thoroughly checking and cleaning the cash, burning the bag, only using small amounts here and there to supplement my income, and so on. If I think I've left anything at all, I'd just give it to the police

Giving an empty bag to the cops or even a half full one sounds right, but it's the worst idea ever. If the cops actually tie it to a crime, they are going to realize it is off, VERY VERY soon. After that, you're now going to jail. You're also not getting any of it back if it has blood on it or the container that it was in does.

The only way you're keeping the money is if no one ever learns that it was out there to find in the first place, or you leave zero evidence of taking it. You're not gonna even be able to put it into the bank. They're most likely going to see who got what money out of the bank at some point and flag all the serial numbers.

The best you can hope for is that they never start looking, or that you can maybe use it or launder it bit by bit and not get caught. >.>

Hand it in to the police. If you spend it, they will track the stolen cash back to you from it's serial number. You're in prison, hope the 21 piece bucket of chicken was worth it. The people who lost that money will come looking for it, you do not want to find out what people who lost 50k will do to the person that ran off with it. If the cops have it, you're safe.
