I can't remember as many people gathering at my place as they did in UK at the funeral of the Queen.

I don't think it's so much about pro-royal sentiment, I think it's more about people wanting to feel that they're at the heart of an historical event, that they've got a tiny role as an extra in some grand drama on the world stage. "I was there that day!"

I think our problem (I'm talking as a Brit) is that when a member of Britain's first family on welfare even so much as does a fart, the media treat it as an historical event.

Real question...why? During COVID you claimed it was because you couldn't leave due to quarantine restrictions. So why are you still there 3 years later?

iirc there was a poll where about half the country supports it, the rest is split pretty evenly between indifference and "it's bad for the country"

And that could be a reason why the rest of the world assumes everyone in the UK is hanging on the Royals every move.

Just like how the rest of the world is consumed by "Red vs Blue" Politics, where a majority of America kinda just lives their lives and doesn't think about Politics at all. The whole "we're all gonna die if ______ is elected/re-elected" is just online rhetoric.

I'm honestly glad our royal family doesn't get in the spotlight much. It helps that our King is about as exciting as a bowl of oatmeal. Or fat free yoghurt.

Absolutely no one likes Charles. Even his own family doesn't. Old money just supports the establishment and doesn't like change.

Liz 2 spent decades making millions of people around the world like the Monarchy.

The Monarchy is spending millions trying to make people like Charles.

That's the difference. And every day as an old person dies and the internet exposes more and more about the absurdity and corruption of the Royal Family, the support will dwindle.

The Royal Family won't see the 22nd century. The only questions are how exactly they will they be phased out and how soon it will happen.

Prepare for President Blair, followed by President Johnson.

I remember my mom crying while watching the Reagan funeral on TV. I asked her why and I don't remember what she said. She's never been a political person so it's nothing to do with that. Maybe just memories of seeing and hearing about him. If it could happen to Americans over a president in office for 8 years then I suppose I can see it happening to Brits over someone in the Royal Family for decades.

Because things change

I was offered a promotion that would require relocation but covid blocked me leaving the country

It was indefinite how long this was going to last and time was of the essence so they hired someone less qualified locally instead

Then after all the nonsense subsided no one else was willing to come to the UK so they offered me a raise to stay instead of quitting.

I also can't just up and leave without screwing over a lot of people so it's a delicate situation.

So for the time being I'm stuck here

I've met Brits that didn't particularly kare for him until he was king. I ain't met anyone who likes his wife, though. I don't know what's she's done, but the ire is usually palpable.

They kind of are. Particularly the end of the monarchy frankly. Since the next generation of the line doesnt seem capable of or even interested in keeping it going frankly.

Hard to know whos to blame though specifically but were likely looking at the end of the royal family in our lifetime likely.

Harry did tank his own reputation with the amount of mud he threw at his own family. A lot of people were tired of the drama he was creating. I think if he and William made up, a lot of people would think more positively of him and he could repair his image.

Figured it was something like that. Hope you're somewhat content there. I know I wouldn't continue staying somewhere if it didn't end up feeling like home and you don't have to either despite feeling obligated to.

This is just anecdotal, but my British friends are somewhere between mild indifference and contempt regarding the Royal Family. They bring up that they're middle class (class distinction seems more important there) and don't like supporting that lavish lifestyle for essentially tourism purposes.

My understanding is that only a minority of UK citizens actually give a toss about them (in a positive way). Same as the US tbh.
