they still exist, I use this as my phone since I don't own a smartphone, but I'm looking to get one that runs AOSP so I can sideload spotify onto it.

It's a shame KaiOS is pretty much dead. There are a number of flip phones that are Android/AOSP capable but there doesn't seem to be many unlocked ones.

I've been looking into them lately and it seems like there are a ton of hoops you need to jump through in order to get apps up and running. Then the ones that are relatively simple to install apps are either extremely old, or aren't supported in the US due to incompatible frequency bands. Like Japan has these phones called "Ketais" which are really cool and run full android despite looking like a flip phone, but Japan is pretty adamant about keeping their phones network-locked (unless you wanna spend $400+ which won't work on T-Mobile or anything like that because now T-Mobile requires VoLTE to work on their network smh)
KaiOS is okay in and of itself, but it's a lot like windows phone where the platform works but the lack of apps/interest kills it.

Your best option might be to get a budget Android phone that's capable of being rooted + another ROM being flashed, and just making the installation as minimal as possible. If you're open to iOS, maybe wait until the next SE model comes out (since it'll literally just be an iPhone 15/16 but with a downgraded camera) and go with a minimal amount of apps from there.

KaiOS didn't take off because their products are mostly marketed towards the elderly. The only worthwhile minimalist phones are sold at a premium while often times being recycled versions of older phones from other manufacturers.

All the people voting yes must have been born not that long ago and grew up with already established cell phones. Nobody born before cell phones or in the time of 80s brick cell phones, would ever have imagined what phones could do today

I saw a girl on the train using one of these and noticed two things: it doesnt fold out completely flat. There is a distinctive line on the crease at many viewing angles.

I've thought about this and don't think they can really age bad. I still think PS3 graphics look good. Not as good as now but not terrible either.
