So if scum pair together you red check. You kill a scum. The other can be like you alrdy got the red check! If you scan the miller's room, oops I was miller so that explains it. If you green check a room, the godfather is like hehehe I was scum there. It makes scanning a narrowing but also a possible deceiver.
