Oppenheimer will win, but I would rather Poor Things get the Oscar.

the oscars are still the 2nd most watched event in america after the super bowl

and are about to give the award for best picture to a movie that made over 800m worldwide and is made by a household name director

to be fair i havent done a google search on this in awhile

i know ratings tanked in 2020 for the covid year (all fake and bad movies) but it climbed back

either way - still good company bro. gotta keep the oscars relevant so studios keep making movies ostensibly for grownups

The reason they expanded the best picture category like 10 years ago is so they could throw in a blockbuster or 2 and hopefully get more viewers. Much like the Grammys catering entirely to pop now, the big awards shows are about the spectacle over the art.

And if those "serious" movies were enough to keep people happy, why'd the whole dang academy decide to expand the category to appeal to the lowest common denominator? Bringing in viewers is absolutely important to a televised program.

Barbie is really the odd one out in this group. How it even got nominated I've got no idea.

did you know the oscars had 10 best picture nominees back before television existed? were they doing that for ratings?

also did you know the academy is like 10,000 voting members and not a handful of people having clandestine meetings where they're conspiring to get more popular movies nominated for best picture? which doesn't really happen since the expansion happened anyway?

Correct. Also many of those 10000 members have acknowledged they don't watch all the nominees anyways and vote for whoever their buddies are part of. The campaign behind an Oscar win is often more fascinating than the movie itself.

The only one I didn't see was Zone, and I feel like this was an incredibly weak year overall. Holdovers was lackluster, flower moon felt closer to a tv movie (I get that's the point, since it was a radio show or some shit, that I assume Marty listened to as a kid), Oppenheimer and anatomy were court room dramas more than anything.

Past lives was fantastic, Barbie was near perfect, and poor things was innovative and completely original and batshit insane and American Fiction while fantastic didn't really feel like an Oscar film, though quite a few of these films didn't really feel that way either.

This year kind of reminds me when Shape of Water won. None of these movies are objectively bad, but none really feel all that grand and most just feel Oscar baity.

Anyway, I'm on board with Poor Things winning whatever it was nominated for because it an entirely original film I hadn't seen anything like it before.

Just realized Maestro is on there, don't think I heard a thing about that besides the makeup controversy.

My fiance and I have been lagging on seeing the nominees. So far we've just seen Barbie and Maestro. At least some of them will be more avaliable soon.

i think the academy's attempt to diversify in the wake of metoo and oscarssowhite is pretty cool tbh. they've added thousands of younger people and international voters while shedding the old white dudes who were grandfathered in. they publish who is invited each year. obviously campaigning is a huge part of it but that's just the name of the game. and it isn't like its a bad thing. neon is very good at it and parasite won. that was a watershed moment. same with a24 and moonlight/eeaao. like is it bad we are seeing more diversity in terms of representation and movies doing well?

i mean i don't really love this year's lineup but it is decidedly not oscar-y compared to what you'd see in the 90s when weinstein was running hollywood. poor things is weird yorgos shit. past lives is an extremely lowkey romantic drama. zone of interest borders on experimental at times (and isn't in english). the holdovers is a shaggy throwback to 70s dramedies. barbie is a candy colored comedy. anatomy of a fall is a foreign movie and we've seen a huge uptick in those being nominated in the last few years.

idk. i just don't see how this inherently draws in more viewers man

oppenheimer has won every guild award. there is almost no chance it loses. too many shared voters in the academy and the guilds.

Oppenheimer wins without question.

The acting awards are where it will be most interesting. Cillian Murphy vs. Paul Giamatti should be super intriguing.

If Oppenheimer wins, there's no reason for Murphy to not also win. Though there is precedent with Crowe not winning best actor despite Beautiful Mind winning the other awards, a film that completely hinged on his performance.

In short, the Oscars are dumb, but also entertaining to a point. It's nice to see people get the recognition they deserved, even if it's at times makeup awards for past flubs.
