RROD because it's kind of amazing how Microsft survived long enough to be a contender in the console wars. Without Halo they wouldn't have gotten far with the og Xbox and the RROD should have destroyed them but like the Cyborg Superman they manage to survive.

Even as a big PlayStation fan that one was interesting. As a multi media machine it could do quite a bit and as a home theatre junkie it was actually a cheap blu-ray player as standalone options were few and far in between and a lot more money when it launched. I know a lot of die hard home theatre junkies on avsforum that had PS3s strictly as blu-ray movie players who had never gamed in their life.

It had SACD capability and played regular CDs and was a quality DVD upscaler. It wasnt as good as Oppo but it was definitely quality.

The thing is pure gamers didnt give a damn about any of that and purely from a gaming standpoint it was a stumble.

Frankly I didnt mind it. I was 30 when it released so I had plenty of disposable money to spend on my hobby and it was the cheapest item in my home theatre but if you were a younger gamer who only cared about gaming yeah it was probably a nonsense price to you.

64/Gamecube are just continuations of the same policy so it's hard to point to one of them over the other.

Some of these impacted people more at launch (PS3 price, RROD) than the average person coming into it later and I'm not sure the Diablo thing hurt anything besides the Diablo game itself.

So I have to go with Wii U naming because you came off one of the best selling consoles of all time, which also had an audience of people who were new to consoles and just didn't understand why the very similarly named thing "needed" to be purchased.

Xbox One no used games.

I just picked that because it was a sea change, even with the RROD the Xbox was still a kingpin despite PS3's strong finish. I feel like the used games, people do still like physical media but companies don't and some users. That pick was just a gut instinct fast pick of mine. I am willing to change my mind though of course. The Wii U was a stupid name, but the name alone didn't sink the system imo.

The Saturn did, definitely really screw up their launch but if the Playstation didn't launch for such a cheap price, it's more that I feel like the Saturn and Sega in general were scrambling after the 32X (I know this didn't effect Sega of Japan as much). I feel like the, hey THE SATURN IS OUT go to Kaybee Toys wasn't as bad as the Xbone who was doing well, and decided yeah let's just be anti consumer.

Honestly a better worded emphasis on online connection (not saying mandatory explicitly but implying it) and a failure to mention the no used games thing probably would have led to a much better announcement and launch.

Instead they came out focusing on that shit and got clapback even from Sony

I am a big OG Xbox fan, but never owned a system of theirs since then. I've played 360's before omg I am going to go off topic some. I remember playing what was it Madden '06 on the 360 and sure it ran better than Madden on the PS3 for some reason, but it was the most bare-bones football game considering what the PS2 and Xbox era brought us. Your play by play was literally one guy calling plays like a radio broadcast. There's the pitch, strike one. The minimalist aspect was kinda funny, but it just showed how like stripped the games would become.

This is why ppl were pissed about Madden until Ultimate Team. It's not able to be saved now but I do feel like some complaints were excessive before MUT (Madden Ultimate Team).

As bad as the xbox one thing was, sega's fuck ups with the saturn, both the instant release after announcement thus no games from devs being ready and the exreme amount of in-fighting between their branches was bad enough (that shit pissed off both wal-mart and k b toys so bad they refused to stock saturn products, and I'm assuming this stunt did not go over too well with other retailers. Wal-mart did eventually change their mind and stock the dreamcast when it came out, but k b toys was perma-done with sega) that it snowballed into a downward spiral that they never truly recovered from. *Because of the petty in-fighting, saturn's actual sonic game sonic xtreme did not become a thing. Dudes was confidant in being able to get it down asap if they could use the nights into dreams engine, but yuji naka threatened to leave the company if the americans touched it. Dudes was just some old clowns with the japan vs north america rivalry.* (Also the one dude bernie stolar just....did not help at all. The whole "our future is not the saturn" thing....like, why would you announce this instead of fighting to make a come back. Dude was responsible for blocking so many 2D games coming from japan which was the saturn's biggest strength. Yeah, it isn't the new fad with 3D gaming, but its better than having absolutely nothing coming out in the west).

With the xbox one's whole thing you can always point and laugh but at the end of the day microsoft has more money than god so they aren't leaving the console industry until they say so. Sega's dumbasses fighting with each other and stupid stunts like the 32X, yuki naka being a bitch, the saturn outside of japan and shenmue took them out of the console game for good, and everything was totally their fault after the very successful genesis.

yeah I think this is really between the Xbone and the Saturn

though I went with the Xbone because it was mostly that decision and the DRM thing that has seemingly permanently killed Microsoft's momentum. there are like a dozen distinct individual blunders from Sega that explain why they left the console market, so even though it was a stupid-ass decision, somehow the Saturn launch thing is not uniquely terrible

Only Gamefaqs members of NA would remember Kay-Bee Toys. Didn't they shut down not long after anyways? I agree that Microsoft has too much money to fail, but sure is a lot of KB Toys and Sega. I didn't think they were that big of a deal in the video game biz but they do get mentioned for some reason with the Saturn.

KB toys was right alongside toys r us as one of the major video game retailers of the era (they were the 2nd actually), and seeing as how north america was one of the major regions for video game money (at least I think north america was slightly ahead of japan for video game sales in the 90s counting consoles, PCs and arcades. NA is undisputed the number 1 region for sales today, but its a toss up between NA and JP then. I'm thinking NA though) getting black-listed by K B toys was indeed a very big deal.

*Yeah, north america was putting in the money for those video games even back then, just glancing over the video games in the 90s and seeing the console, portable, and arcade revenue on the wikipedia article.*

One of my best buys was waltzing into funcoland in the late 90s and buying super mario rpg for 20 bucks. Those were the days.

Naming it the Wii U was bad, but I think the complete lack of marketing until 2015 (and even then it was anemic, and focused solely on Mario Kart and Splatoon), the reveal trailer focusing entirely on "the new controller" without mentioning anything about a new console, and the system having a near-perma drought through its life all did way more damage (seriously, even the worst Switch year is a diamond mine compared to the best Wii U year).

"Do you guys not have phones?" upset people online, but those same people went out and bought a $70 online only game filled with microtransactions later resulting in Blizzard's most successful launch. And the few of those people who are whales made Immortal a successful game in spite of all that outrage. So, good job on the lack of self control there for everyone, Blizzard suffered nothing at all.

Xbox One reveal, though... That single-handedly took Microsoft from a top dog in the game to cratering the brand overnight. At this point it even seems like Microsoft is going to leave the hardware arena and focus entirely on trying to become the Netflix of gaming.

So that's why I literally never heard of the sega saturn until I joined the internet... I just read up on that "$299" PS1 announcement and it's crazy that sega even recovered from that enough to make the dreamcast before bowing out of the video game console industry. I thought they went from Genesis to Dreamcast because that's what people around me had

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExaAYIKsDBI

The first one in the polls seems the most historic.

But boy does Nintendo's hate of piracy drive them to make some weird decisions, like the ugly gamecube mini-disc. It still drives them to this day. And I get it, video games are literally their livelihood they're not quite the conglomerate that Microsoft is with several divisions and money out the wazoo.

Ps3's infamous price point basically cost Sony not just 1st place but 2nd, yet it also forced them to reevaluate so that's good. Like Nintendo, if Sony goes unchecked they'll do even more anti-consumer things.

The "ps3 as bluray player" is funny to me because it was true, the console came out right when bluray won over HD DVD and it was the reason that the higher hardware sales were at odds with the lower software sales. But it's extra funny because while bluray did effectively replace DVDs, the move to digital in the 2010s has made it so that most people just stream movies in the 2020s, and bluray is mostly for diehard fans of whatever media it's holding. I've noticed it's mostly the older generation still buy physical media, while the new generation just watch on their phones, for better or worse.

Wish Microsoft was self-owned in raising the game price point, introducing online, and basically all of DLC... but nope all 3 things especially the last 2 succeeded beyond imagination, much to the detriment of gaming as a whole.

Maybe back then in 2013 or for special forces type stuff but it's definitely something we use on deployments nowadays.

Now, while on mission, in a convoy, or following the death of a soldier in combat, or something there are/can be rules regarding internet use and we can be restricted but that usually won't be for more than a few days at a time.
