Not Musashi levels of well-known, and even then, well-known is not a descriptor of someone whose real name or feats (if any exist) are unknown.

Yasuke is pretty well known among enthusiasts of that era and place of history but not much is known about him, which literally makes him perfect for historical fiction with a loose connection to historical accuracy.

Assassin's Creed is the series where you jump off the tallest building in town and survive unscathed by landing in a pile of leaves. Do I have that correct?

People aren't mad that it's a black character in the "wrong history". They're mad that it's a black character, period.

Remember when GTA: San Andreas was announced and how people cried and screamed about having to play as a black character IN A GAME SET IN FICTIONAL 1990'S COMPTON!!!!

Imma just say, I don't know who this "Musashi" guy is he keeps bringing up, but I knew of Yasuke. So really, which one is "better-known", not that that matters anyway? As mentioned, Yasuke is a perfect choice for an AC game, as the characters are not meant to be well-known historical figures. That would kind of go against the whole assassin "we work in the dark to protect the light" mantra.

There were definitely people who said "I'm not black so I can't get fully immersed in this game" at the time

Even a search on GameFAQs forums for San Andreas and the word black doesnt show any posts where people mention it for five years after release.

In terms of the game itself, it certainly doesn't matter because AC gave up on "semi-historical accuracy" a long time ago, so who he was and what he did in life doesn't really matter to his in-game self. As a general trope, I think Yasuke in particular seems to be weirdly overused after he had some kind of cultural emergence in the last few years. I understand why people may want to explore him as a person and as a character, but I guess it can come off as kind of lazy as well because a lot of it is just turning him into an original character.

Is he overused? I barely know that much games or shows about the guy in general. I know a few characters inspired by Yasuke like Nagoriyuki in GG, but in terms of him being overused I seriously doubt that claim.
