So we're allowed this, as per DToast, as long as it's basically the only political topic on the board (which is pretty much how it was before the politics topic ban).

I couldn't think of anything clever, so...131 days until Election Day.

Same. I'm not sure how much of it is trollbait, but apparently Biden's voice is shot and he has no energy. I wonder if his campaign agreed on such an early debate in order to get it outta the way early.

I'm not sure Trump has said a factual statement this entire debate.

I'm speaking in terms of just the way he is talking and communication skills, not the substance of the words being said

I long for a timeline where Biden stepped down after 2.1 years in office allowing Harris nearly 2 years to champion a few pieces of obviously popular legislation and be the one on the debate stage tonight. She would be much more capable of pouncing on Trump's bullshit.

I did enjoy when trump was speaking about abortion rights and implied he'd say whatever is going to get him elected.

I think the hour is too late for a candidate swap. They needed to transition away from Biden halfway through his presidency.

Ultimately the election still needs to be positioned as a referendum on Trump and in that context it is still very winnable.

I noticed this too. He needs to stop fueling Trump and just be the reasonable, responsible voice. And he has done that at times, but he's feeding into Trumps ramblings so much.

I forgot what the topic was but Trump had the first two minutes and barely addressed the issue while jumping from one issue to another talking nonsense. When Biden had a chance to say his 2 minutes, he could've taken the high ground and said something like "I don't even think it's worth addressing the nonsense Trump just said, but to answer your question (moderator) on the issue, here is my response" Instead he just rambled back some responses and fed into Trump's ramblings.

But yeah like Biden is 100% democrats best shot and people not understanding this confuses me tbh. He is a sitting us president and that actually matters a lot

Oh I agree. I just think there was potential to transition to Harris halfway through Biden's term and put her in a position to win a general election. Much too late for that now though.

But it's just maddening to hear Trump lying through his teeth about climate issues. You can tell that Biden knows the information necessary to contradict what Trump is saying, he just isn't able to effectively communicate it.

We currently have no evidence Joe is benefiting from incumbency at all, and we both know this next media cycle will not be kind.

i will say that after having a really bad dementia moment early on in the debate, Biden seems to have improved slightly in his oration skills as the debate has gone on.

Sitting president isn't an advantage when stuff isn't going well. A big thing is inflation is SUPER noticeable now and most people aren't going to fact check whether Biden or Trump actually caused it or not and are just going to blame Biden for it because it's escalated a lot in the past 4 years (and imo rightly in some regards though COVID hitting on election year and it distorting a lot of things makes it a bit hard to pinpoint where the blame sits)

I just want Biden to throw it back at him and say that it was Trump who committed to a hard pull out from Afghanistan. Trump's administration declared the Afghanistan withdrawal in February 2020 which had to be completed by May 2021. Despite this over the next 11 months there was little to no preparation or plan devised by Trump's administration to facilitate that withdrawal giving the incoming administration 4 months to execute a promise that his administration made.

The Afghanistan withdrawal should be an anchor around Trump's neck and he's being allowed to use it as a weapon.

I don't get the people who keep saying that things are awful because we have moderately high inflation. There's way worse things that can and have happened.

Yes, Trump was the one who made the deal! It was basically a surrender; we withdrew and got virtually nothing in return. All Biden did was implement it.
