So setting aside Biden's disastrous performance, the standout moment for me was Trump bragging about firing a bunch of people he appointed. That's akin to bragging about washing your underwear after shitting yourself.

I agree the moderators could've helped keep the topics in line with the questions, but ultimately it's up to the other person on stage to push back on all of the lies that Trump spews. He has to be cognitive enough to do that and if he's not than they need to figure something out.

Realistically Trump made some absolutely stupid declarations. Talking about how the Palestine protests were worse than Charlottesville should be enough to make even the staunchest anti-Biden progressive stop and contemplate who they would be allowing to help win.

debates havent impacted general elections in decades. what does impact general elections are public stances. trump doubling down on his anti abortion extremism while doubling down on the 1/6 insurrection will be blasted nonstop by democrat and anti trump ads. the people that have showed up to repudiate the gop extremism on abortion will show up to vote against the guy that killed abortion.

trump needs way more than his cult and common gop voters to win a general election. he needs to swing a huge number of 'moderates' in rust belt states that he just isnt winning. even assuming georgia goes red again, trump isnt winning wisconsin/michigan/nevada/arizona

Arizona was by 10,000 votes
Nevada was by 30,000 votes

These are all well within the margin where an unenthusiastic populace who doesn't want to vote for Biden can easily swing the vote for Trump. Trump's base and most Republicans will vote for him no matter what, it's Democrats that can truly shift and decide against voting.

Trump doesn't need to gain voters if his base has remained consistent (hard to say really). All he needs is for Biden to lose enough voters for that to matter. That's where performing poorly in these debates becomes a factor. Democrats already aren't super keen on Biden in a lot of ways, if he starts to show fatigue and acting low energy/uninspiring, a low enthusiasm voting block is the worst possible scenario for his campaign.

we have the last few years of election results post roe that tell us that those states have voted for democrats. abortion has killed the gop in all the 'swing' states and now the fat fuck responsible for killing roe is on the ballot.

My main hope is that no one undecided or wavering was watching this and debates don't actually matter much, other priors will decide this election as they always do.

Hopefully this isn't cope.
