As we all know, no one has ever been coerced into making a false confession

He probably shouldn't have committed the crime that got him there in the first place.

I agree and feel like people are simply more interested in callous retribution than actual justice when it comes to the death penalty, but I can't say I will weep for this man:

On the evening of July 9, 1998, Taberon Honie called Carol Pikyavit, demanding that she immediately visit him and threatened to kill several of her family members if she did not comply.[2] Hours later, Honie broke into the house of Pikyavit's mother, Claudia Marie Benn, in Cedar City, Utah. Honie then began to attack Benn with a kitchen knife, slashing her throat four times from ear to ear, with the slashes being deep enough to reach her backbone.[2][4] In the early hours of the next day, police officers came to Benn's house, responding to a 911 call from one of her neighbors. The responding officers found a smashed window and Benn's corpse partially naked, with her being mutilated and having deep stab wounds to her anus and vagina.[2][3] They also located Honie in Benn's garage, arresting him after he was found with blood residue on his fingertips. During Honie's arrest, he stated at one point; "I stabbed her. I killed her with a knife."[5][2] The responding officers then located Benn's three infant and toddler-aged granddaughters in the same house, with them being covered in blood.[2] One of Benn's granddaughters was also sexually abused by Honie, right after Benn's murder, causing genital injuries to her granddaughter.[3]

We still exonerate innocent people after the fact and have a state judge trying to force through an execution with "Well somebody has to be punished" when even the prosecution is looking at new evidence and balking. If the state is killing people, then the state shouldn't be getting it wrong.

After reading about what he did, I won't mourn him either.

Im against the death penalty. Locking someone away from society forever is more humane, even for the worst criminals.

Theres also always a chance they put an innocent person to death.

Thank God the death penalty exists because it has prevented people from murdering ever since we put it in place. Clearly it is a fantastic preventative.

You said he called himself a monster which makes the death penalty appropriate without a doubt.

They were saying a confession or admission like that on its own is not enough to justify putting someone to death

The death penalty should be banned because there's a chance an innocent person will be put to death. I don't see it as barbaric given what he is clearly guilty of doing here.

This man was arrested, tried, found guilty, and sentenced for crimes of aggravated murder, burglary, object rape, and forcible sodomy. Regardless, I dont think you have a handle on how the judicial system works and I sincerely dont mean this to be insulting, you have a very narrow scope

Kinda defeats the purpose anyway when you let them sit in prison for years and years, THEN execute them. At that point you might as well just keep them in prison, it accomplishes the same thing

Calling themselves a monster might have been coerced out of them. Just like a 'confession'.

I don't necessarily think that's the case, but that's the line of reasoning.

When I said by his own admission he called himself a monster I was just talking about his candor, not an admission in the legal sense

Yeah. People are like "but this guy definitely deserves it!" And it's like this guy isn't the argument. It's about the people who don't deserve it or just straight to innocent people.

And it's not really even clear that he deserves it. They did not execute Anders Breivik and their justice system is a model for the rest of the world.

How many innocent people put to death is an okay price to pay to be able to kill someone like this?

I think I was raised by people who at least somewhat believed (or wanted to believe that) we live in a peaceful, perfect world of free choice. "Maybe you'll have to physically defend yourself, but probably not" Upper middle class(ish)(lol) people. At least when it comes to certain things. Stay out of trouble for real, and real trouble can't find you on most days. Like, "This sort of thing just doesn't happen anymore in the heart of civilization" It's not as if people are killing each other left and right, or you need mob justice just to stop someone every other week or so. Like it was back in the day, I guess

(idk how I currently feel or what I think about some of that)

Anyway though, there's basically no reason to execute a person in a world like we have today. Save for maybe treason, since we presumably have a still flawed system. Different rules when it comes to military/government. It's not okay to choose to hurt people though, which i guess crosses over into that territory (military pun!), and I guess a lot of that was said to me (or some of it) because I was just a child. It's true though. At least some of it is. That's not to say people don't slowly kill each other in other ways, or there's nothing to protecting yourself (especially if you have a lot of money) or live in a really bad place

This execution, or these executions, set the wrong example. Meanwhile, it's like why?

My swashbuckling ancestors who had never been to space, didn't have security cameras, let alone repeating weaponry if there's any correlation there..... Think on that for a moment. And really insecure jails, little in the way of forensics, you know.... The guys who were kinda famous for breaking the conventions of war by not showing up to line up in a field to get slaughtered by British? They were totally in the practise of executing people! Isn't an excuse. Why is execution still used in Utah? Well, I guess it's being phased out. It's not like states are debating whether they should start executing or torturing people. (Right?)

I'm not even sure jail is a great answer in most cases. You know what else you can do to a person as punishment?

That way we can keep them in the workforce ;) or fix what they done, or at least make up for it

Many of them don't want due process. Just swift execution.

'Only if there's no doubt they are guilty!', they cry. Conveniently forgetting that that is supposed to be the standard now, and deciding that they completely trust cops and prosecutors after all.

Imo, letting them off easy by not having to deal with the consequences of their actions anymore.

I honestly don't know. That's why I'm asking.

Death penalty trials are very expensive. As is 20 years on death row while multiple appeals take place. (That's the average time it takes).

They can't even get the chemicals these days, because suppliers aren't keen on governments using their products to kill people.

So true. The death penalty is why we do not have murders occuring in the US. Even if the death penalty did not work I would insist on it for the satisfaction the the death penalty gives.

I agree, but I don't see a problem with this. That's what it would be about: punishment. If someone committed a serious crime, they should be punished.

I do not disagree that the government certainly uses the death penalty to liberally but sometimes evil just needs to be put down and from what people have said he did I would say he is pretty up there in the evil scale.
