why would they make her more feminine

hell the idea of a feminine earh bender is kinda hard to grasp do to how the bending works

i mean you could potentially build a interesting character with that contrast i suppose could potentially even build a dancer style with it and maybe if they get to legend of korra they could tie the metal clan to it like its how tophs metal bending was refined

but kinda sexist to do it with TOPH

im not one to care about changes but this one is ehhh not good

To be clear, this is based entirely on the actress saying, "My version of Toph is going to be a little older and slightly more feminine."

It might just be overblown.

One of my favorite characters in any media I've watched. And this is kind of why I'm rarely ever into adaptations. They want to put their on spin on stories and characters, which is understandable, but I'm not interested.

I completely forgot they did a live action Avatar series. Like I meant to watch it, then just completely forgot lol.

It will be interesting to see how much they actually change Toph. Maybe her being more "feminine" just has to do with the looks of the actress herself?

Toph literally thought it was absolutely brilliant that the actor that was gotten to portray her in a play was a giant muscle man.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/8/87b243a5.jpg

The last thing Toph should be portrayed as is more feminine. Sure there's a somewhat feminine aspect to her character but she hides it from even her friends.

Of course this news doesn't mean they're screwing up, it's all in how it's handled but my hopes for this show are already in the shitter after how they absolutely butchered Bumi. I didn't even bother finishing the first season after they fucked his character up THAT badly.

I didnt read the article and only skimmed this topic. If it's only "slightly" per post 7, I dont see the big deal.

Its not like Toph has not expressed a small desire to appear slightly more feminine before. Even that parody of the avatar gang, the dude playing her she found to be funny because of her style of humor... it wasn't because of a desire to be viewed as a man. So I hope some arent twisting that into a, "she identifies as a man" moment.

Let's wait and see what "slightly" means.

It's not the feminine part i am concerned about, the actress said she wants to "humanize the character because she was just a cartoon". Thats disrespectful af and toph has a great character depth and development, and i am concerned for her character if she think cartoon character can't have depth.

Or a whole bunch of people hated it.

If Netflix cancels all the good/popular stuff but still has ongoing shows, then the transitive property would suggest they don't cancel the bad/unpopular stuff.

We have very different definitions of 'fine'.

Yeah, Bumi was my jumping-off point. Changing him up wasn't the inherent problem, and some of their changes up to that point were fine. Making Zhao a scheming toady on the rise instead of a one-dimensional egomaniac? Sounds great! Truncating Omashu, the Mechanist, and Jet into a single interwoven plot? Sure, I can see that. The problem was that they turned Bumi into this borderline-suicidal bitter old man but insisted on cherry-picking shot-for-shot bits of old Bumi that mixed with new Bumi like oil and water. You can occasionally find obvious tells that the people adapting source material don't fully understand what they're adapting, and that was one of them.

I said when I gave up on the show that I could be convinced to give s2 a shot at some point (that's when the original truly starts to shine anyway), but that would hinge entirely on how well they nailed Toph's character. Remains to be seen if this article is clickbait or a grim forecast of things to come, but unfortunately a lot of the 'clickbait' articles leading up to s1 turned out to be more-or-less accurate.

this proves that people do just care about messing with the established lore

this is the opposite of the usual outrage

many many times take character who is feminine and make them less and people outrage

so why are people outraging for this? could it be the really do just want a faithful adaptation??

Nah thats not Sokka that we all love. He was an super insecure manchild, who was left behind to "defend" the village, I mean they did it to protect him as he was too young, but that damaged him mentally. He starts off with an inferiority complex and thinks women are beneath him and learns and grows out of it. Good character development shouldnt be tossed out.

I get what they were going for with Bumi. He witnessed the whole hundred year war. Having him more bitter and cynical was fine. If Aang was as optimistic and playful as he was in season one of the cartoon, it may have worked. But that's kind of what the whole show did, it drained the fun by upping the realism of what a hundred year war would do to the survivors.

Honestly I keep comparing LA Avatar with LA One Piece. I feel both recreated the world as best they could and while One Piece made more changes because of how much more content it was adapting what it got right was the tone. The heart and soul of the original. Which is where Avatar missed the mark.

I didn't hate LA Avatar I just feel it came so close and then didn't fully deliver.
