Please answer the question below. You can elaborate as much or as little as you desire. I will not comment on any particular result.

If you read the problem as a set of equalities then you would do 7 and 12 to make all 3 expressions equal. Syntactically that's what the problem would be read as.

If you read the problem as like a set of sequential expressions where each answer becomes a variable in the next expression then you would do 12 and 17. This wouldn't actually ever be written like this on one line. But if you were to input everything in here in order on a calculator then you would get that kind of a result.

8+4 (is the same as) 7+5 (is the same as) 12.

But I just did it as if I was adding up my shopping. 8 + 4 is 12, and another 5, that's 17.

I interpreted the OP as a fill in the blanks question, to which 7 and 12 are the right answers.

That said, if I saw 8 + 4 = 12 + 5 = 17 in someone's hand written notes/scratchwork, it would make perfect sense.

It...really can't.

It is not mathematically correct to just add things onto equations.

5 + 4 = 9 + 10 = 19 is not a mathematically correct statement regardless of the intent behind it. There's actually a surprisingly large amount of pedagogical research about how many elementary teachers do a piss-poor job when it comes to teaching what the "=" symbol means and what the word "equals" means, and it correlates with poor mathematical achievement in the long run.

Yeah, it's one of those things which, as a teacher, you wouldn't mark *wrong*, but you would not want to demonstrate to your students either.

An extreme example would be 0 + 0 = 0 + 5 = 5...hopefully we all agree that 0 is not equal to 5.

That actually does get a little tricky, because there are cases where = is used for assignment. One example is in sigma/pi notation for sums/products.

But those cases are so vastly outnumbered by cases where it denotes equality that it's hardly worth mentioning.

True, and those cases really don't arise until you get to a higher level of mathematics conceptual understanding.

I've recently been exploring (personally, anyway) how different languages use different words to describe various mathematical terminologies, and I'm thinking about doing some research about how this is correlated with a different level of mathematical understanding.

For example, in English, we use the word "equal" to represent/explain the mathematical symbol "=", but we really don't use the word "equal" in any other context, so many students really don't know what it means or what it represents.

Compared to a language like Chinese, where the word (deng yu) is used to represent the "=" sign, so it certainly has that meaning, but it's also used as a word in casual conversation. For example, if I were to say the English sentence "Exercising every day does not mean that you will lose weight", in Chinese, I might say - the word in this context is more like "mean" - so in the Chinese language, the word we use for "=" is also used to denote whether or not two things have the same meaning/value, so even the word in Chinese used to explain "=" alone has much more meaning than the English word "equals". Might that explain why even Chinese students with limited language skills tend to fare better in math than their English-speaking counterparts? That's probably not the *only* reason, but it might be a small part of it.

Topics like these always make me laugh because someone always comes in and says something vague like "people are so dumb, there's obviously a correct answer" but never says their side, almost like they're afraid of getting it wrong themselves but wants people to think they're so smart.

Anyway, my answer is 7 and 12.

Equals as we all know comes from the Latin word equus or horse.

So obviously what you mean by equals is were just horsing around and anything goes.

Yeah there's always that guy.

I think I did forget to state my own answer though. The blanks should be 7 and 12.

That said, I totally understand why someone would think 12 and 17, and I think it really does have a lot to do with some fundamental truths about how we teach math in elementary schools (i.e. poorly).

Mathematics Education is its own subfield that has a tremendous amount of literature surrounding it - I happen to be a math teacher, so if you're interested, I can find some literature for you about it. It's quite interesting if you want to read about it, but it can also be a bit dry.

Oh

After reading the entire thread I'm not correct, apparently. But this feels like the same sort of gotcha as 4+2(1+1)=8 or 12 depending on order of operations. The issue is that you would never see TCs original question or the problem I just presented in anything except a math class or internet trying to start a debate about which is correct, as neither is, iirc, correct math notation.
