My original draft for that post had top 4 and Gumshoe included, but I felt like that was a bit less of a lock. But that furthers my point that the original cast is going to dominate.

Yeah, forget original trilogy, we're probably getting a top 5 from the original game.

i would pretty strongly assume phoenix, maya, and edgeworth are in most peoples top 5 (and almost guaranteed in their top 10s) so yeah that seems right they'd be top3 overall. if you dont like those characters you probably just quit playing ace attorney and never bothered to make a list for this topic

Sholmes and Godot are probably the only two Non-AA1 with a shot at the top 5.

Gavelle too low and I would have liked Yuri to place higher too. He's amusing.

Gavelle is ok where she is. She starts super annoying but has amazing character develoment (and indeed that turn on Excelsius is top tier)

She has a fun face turn, but she's honestly an aggravating opponent (not in a good way) and the sham trial in E2-5 is pretty bad.

Oh right I did show up in that one rating topic recently (?) to specifically vent my hate, so this is an open secret I guess. Though I've never really hid my ire either, but it is one of the reasons I don't go into more AA topics.

Klavier Gavin's brother, only he's a defense attorney instead of a prosecutor. He's a pretty dark villain, which makes him somewhat compelling, but I'm not sure it's enough to overcome all the other weaknesses of Apollo Justice. The fact that he got Phoenix Wright disbarred alone makes him hateable enough. Everything else he does is just pure evil. But at the same time, what made him that way? Like yeah, Zak Gramarye is a dick to him firing him (though probably not wrong either), but then he's like "Well okay then, I'll frame Phoenix Wright and murder a child." Which yeah, it's really evil. But the fact Klavier never saw it coming just makes it feel like they said "How can we make this guy more evil?" Rather than "What are his motivations?

Oh god. I mean what can you say about this guy. His villainy is brilliant but were also talking about AA4 and like, its complicated, idk - Paratroopa1

On one hand, Kristoph has the least sensible motivations of any character in the series this side of Zak. On the other, he is actually a lot of fun to take down, and his Perceive is insane. - MrSmartGuy

Kristoph Gavin will never live down the extremely dumb way he is introduced and summarily taken care of in the first case of Apollo Justice, what with the cards wreathed in blue flames nonsense. Not a great cop, but a decent one who just wants to find the truth. His brother was murdered, and he wants to find out what happened. Also he's a cowboy. Which kind of works. He did what he had to do to try to get the evidence and take another look at it. He's a pretty likeable guy all around. You know, we ranked Charley, but nobody ranked Billy the Cactus. Did we forget Billy?!

The main driving force behind 1-5. While I typically hate characters that hinge on a single personality trait, for some reason I give Jake a pass. Probably because he's just SO over the top that it wraps back around to being funny again. He openly drinks from a flask while on the stand, and shaves his beard with a god damn machete I mean come on. - MrSmartGuy

Probably loses to one of the best bluffs of the entire series. He's a very intimidating guy (but not as intimidating as Viola). Not to mention pretending to be Phoenix Wright? I want to know how nobody noticed. Like... the Judge, sure. Like Payne had to recognize it right? I guess he wouldn't bring it up.. Like Para says below, let us see how that trial went. I don't care if it's just an anime short. A really funny character especially for a culprit.

Proprietor of Madame Tusspells. She's VERY thorough with making sure the waxworks are sculpted in every detail. She has a very creepy demeanor to her for someone who is also pretty nice. Also Sholmes works for her tracking down one of her waxworks. I don't know why but I love her 'shush' animation. Madame Tusspells is based on a real place too, which makes it even cooler. Madame Tussauds. I also feel like they naturally wove her into the narrative too.

One of the most sympathetic culprits in the series. And our last character before the Top 50. He's a nice guy who just wants to avenge his girlfriend's death, not knowing nobody was at fault. He doesn't kill anyone (even though someone does die) he just frames a Whale. And when the Whale is proven innocent, and poor Sasha is blamed, he still tries to get the Whale convicted instead. A worse culprit would easily blame Sasha to get away with it.

Just easily the best killer in the series. Not even really a villain! Actually a nice guy who was just really mad at a dolphin! When he did his transformation sequence I ascended to another plane of existence - Paratroopa1

Yeah. It's interesting because I feel like I am in your camp on general principle but yeah I'm just not-- like I feel like I'll agree with a lot of what you'll say even. It'll be an interesting discussion to have when it comes up though.

I feel like I dont know half of that top50 but of the ones I recognize the main surprises I have that made top50 are shelley de killer (hes important to the plot in a cool case but I feel like he was kind of one-note and not interesting) and magnus mcgilded (he seemed pretty unlikeable? and like 'thats the point' sure but like hes just also so one-note and seethrough from minute 1 like whats the point where you get enjoyment from his char? I guess his dying is kind of unexpected but thats not really points to him its points to ashley.

and I really dont like iris (pink hair version) either but I can understand why someone would so she can get a pass

Alas dont know the source material though she'd possibly have ranked highly. Only rated 113 due to only having played AA1-3, 3/5 of AJ and AAI.
