I have Kristoph in my top 100, so I'm good with that one. The other four, I don't really get. I don't even dislike Maggey like a lot of people do. She's just kinda boring, especially for a two-time (or three if you want to count E1-1) defendant. She's the Juniper Woods of the OT.

April is really memorable, I'll give her that.

Ill have more detailed thoughts later.

I cooled on Tahrust. Hes still great but he has a pretty small presence, especially in comparison to his peers.

I assume the others are due to new players or just cooling when ranking as opposed to rating.

I liked Meele a bit more than when rating but she definitely feels out of place in the top 100.

I kinda dislike April May because I think she gives a really wrong impression of what sorta vibe Ace Attorney is, especially since shes such an early character. Ive had multiple friends tell me they dont want to play an anime hentai game because they got to April May.

I think the differences in ranking the whole cast together and rating individual characters led to the discrepancy. Characters who are more plot relevant can stand out more even if they're not viewerd positively.

You know, all things considered, this isn't going too too bad for me. I assumed it would be a lot worse for some reason.

I now realize I have jinxed myself to start obliterating the top of my list

lotta hart and oldbag definitely too low. they arent perfect characters, of course, but playing the apollo trilogy recently after replaying the phoenix trilogy reminds me of how much (generally) better the writing is for the minor characters in the older games.

Larry was really good before he got Flanderized.

Larry injects an element of chaos into all of his appearances that I appreciate, even if he's kind of annoying sometimes (other than 3-2, which is a wasted appearance, really)

They tried to replicate it with Datz and it didn't really work. They tried to replicate it with Emeer and created the most chaotic character in the entire series (who also doesn't overstay his welcome, which is key).

Larry was also good in his first appearance and as a spoiler is my last "dead horse beaten" character.

I actually don't mind Maggey in her appearances.

Damian Tenma is a client from Dual Destinies. He's Jinxie's father, Mayor of Tenma Town and a professional wrestler. Tenma is accused of killing Alderman Rex Kyubi of Nine Tales Vale (Where his daughter works as a maid). He can be a bit intimidating, but he's also very generous and kind. A pretty awesome guy for our first member of the Top 100. He wears a bunch of warding charms on his head, courtesy of his daughter. He's definitely a memboable character and it's a pretty good twist that he's The Amazing Nine-Tails.

Best. Dad. Ever. The plot twist revolving around him and the Alderman is one of my favorites in the series, and was legitimately shocking to me. - MrSmartGuy

Noodle guy! I mean what did you expect with a name like that? I didn't like him at first because of the harmonica thing. But he grew on me over time. A good one-off character, who doesn't overstay his welcome. I know some people love the harmonica, but to me it just felt like it was eating up time. His playing is good, though. Just the animation playing so often kind of annoyed me. Maybe it was just me, though. (I still rated him fairly highly myself, like I said I do like him!) Also I hope they still get noodles from him.

Real talk: Guy Eldoon is legitimately my favorite non-titular character introduced in AA4. The hat removal scene gave me more emotions than anything else the game tried to do. It helps that I love his little harmonica ditty. - MrSmartGuy

The Queen Bitch herself. She's a bit over the top if we're being honest, but they've had to try to find ways to top themselves. The Defense Culpability Act is truly heinous. Though I'm not sure how much sense it makes storywise. But I think her strength as a villain is mainly that she has a lot of power. Which doesn't make her as compelling as some of the others in the series. She did make someone's Top 10 though, so she definitely has fans.

I would say that a mystery game has probably never had a more obvious final villain from the beginning than Spirit of Justice, but GAA2 exists. Which hinders my opinion of her quite a bit, I will admit. But she still plays a strangely comedic role in 6-5 that is a little at odds with itself, but I still kinda dig? A very hit-and-miss character for me, so I stuck her right in the middle here. - MrSmartGuY

She doesnt quite have the same gravitas as Manfred von Karma just because she controls the entire justice system and he doesnt so its a little unbelievable that she allows any challenge to her authoritative rule, but Apollo had to win somehow I guess. Still, queen - Paratroopa1

Morgan is an interesting character, but one that doesn't get proper attention. And I'm going to have to cover most of this write-up in spoilers even though this is an Ace Attorney ranking topic, because people might not have played the second game yet and are reading this topic for some reason. The thing about Morgan is that she's not the main villain. She's the backstory for the main villain. Dahlia. And hoo boy, do we see how the two of them have so much in common. It's kind of weird how Morgan has one daughter that turned out just like her, Dahlia, and two daughters that turned out to be two of the nicest, kindest people in the Ace Attorney series, with one of them being so innocent you almost have to wonder if Misty Fey had a secret third daughter and let Morgan pass her off as her own. Morgan almost makes you feel sorry for her, becuase she had her birthright stripped from her through mostly no fault of her own. It's not really clear if she actually cared about Pearl, or if she just saw her as a means for power. Her bitterness is entirely understandable. The village looked down on her, her husband left her and took their daughters with him. She kind of lost everything. And then Misty goes and disappears. Not to mention Misty gets discredited - the person who took everything from her. Which isn't a relief, because Misty was more powerful than her. Morgan holds an important part in the Ace Attorney series. I think she's a little understated, because she's meant to be the backstory for another character ultimately. Or at least that's what she becomes.

One of the biggest missed opportunities in the series to not do more with her, cooler in the anime - Paratroopa1

There's these enemies in Elden Ring that remind me of Aristotle Means. I just can't look at them without thinking of him. Aristotle was a Defense Attorney School teacher. He has some pretty great animations tbh. He strongly believes that the ends justify the means. He's kind of the Excelsius Winner of Defense Attorney's. Willing to take bribes for grades, falsifying evidence. I do love how he stays in teacher mode, even when he's a witness. He's kind of funny.

And 9th for Ga'ran here. Honestly I don't remember Spirit of Justice all too well anymore and it's due for a replay now, but she did feel memorable to say the least. I do like my villains to be over the top anyway.

Yeah Morgan is one of the worst characters to me. Just not an effective villain, no payoff, and honestly anything to do with Spirit Channeling that isn't Maya inherently annoys me anyway to some extent even when done well. I dont think I was her lowest percentile but I was quite close.

Oh dear, five characters I have an 8 or higher. I clearly should have participated in this ranking too. In addition to these guys, I am a bit sad that Palaeno and Natsume (and my goat Oldbag) weren't in the top 100 but lmao I've accepted Oldbag is too divisive at least.

I was the #7 for Damian Tenma, I love that guy. Extremely underrated character, my fave defendant, he's just a blast whenever he's on screen in 5-2

Cammy Meele is a sleepy flight attendant you meet in Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth. She's also the culprit from the second case in the game. What I like about Cammy is she's a lot smarter than she appears. And a lot of what she does is an act. She's also kind of a partner to Edgeworth temporarily, which makes her the only culprit to really try to do that in either investigations game. She's also part of the smuggling ring. Her name is obviously a take on chamomile which is an herb that's supposed to make you sleepy. She also shares her first name with another capcom character from Street Fighter.

Poor Olive Green. She has it rough. She's a struggling artist who's fianc died, and she's a bit self-depreciating. She might just be the most sympathetic culprit in all of Ace Attorney. I mean her fiance is murdered, so she sets up a murder through a method that will only work if the guy's actually trying to kill someone. Then she gets accidentally stabbed in the back. And finally gets caught for attempted murder. But at least the guy who murdered her fiance will go to jail. I also really like Ryunosuke's response to her attempted suicide. Much better than a certain prosecutor. You know who you are miles edgeworth.

Her story is just insanely tragic. She might be the single character I feel the most bad for. And unlike a certain pawnbroker, her battle with depression and suicidal thoughts are appropriately heartbreaking. It's cool that while we're effectively finding her guilty of attempted murder, the true asshole of the case is still the one that has the final breakdown so we can feel good about something. - MrSmartGuy

I'll be honest. I'm not a fan of Acro. Not as much I used to be. I'm sure opinions vary. But the fact that his first response to Regina not understanding death is to literally murder her? He could have just talked to Russell. But nope, he just resorts to murder. And it's not like it's a heat of the moment thing. He forms a plan to kill Regina. And honestly the whole becoming a star thing? If that's Regina's belief, why is that any less legitimate than believing you go to heaven or are reborn? I get that she wasn't treating it with proper reverence. But I really don't see much of a difference between thinking someone died and became a star, or went to heaven. Oh and for all the thinking about other people's feeling stuff? He didn't even think for five seconds how the Ringmaster would feel if he killed Regina. The man he thought of as a father. Anyway, his motivations just don't work for me. I will say that when I was younger, I definitely felt bad for him. So I think his character works on some levels. But the more I think about it, the less i like him. Here's some more positive write-ups from people who do like him:

When something smells, it's usually the Butz. This guy is the first client in the series, and Phoenix Wright's childhood friend. He teeters between annoying and endearing, which is probably why opinions on him are quite divided. You either find him endearing enough to give him a pass for the annoying stuff, or annoying enough to ignore the endearing stuff. Larry's also one of those characters who varies from case to case. In some cases he's much better, and in other cases? You just want him to go away. I think that's kind of what they're going for, though. Someone you're like "Why are these guys friends again?" but then think "Okay, they had some good moments."

Oh Larry, they did you dirty, buddy. You were great in AA1 and I kinda wanted to rank you higher for that but man you are just so bad in the later games and thats really sad - Paratroopa1

Why the hell did I rank Larry in my top 50? What possessed me to do such a thing? If I only took into account AA and AAI2, then sure, I guess this makes sense. But those other appearances happened. He's pretty great for a tutorial culprit who does not make any later appearances. Though I guess there's really only 3 of them. But he's still the best of them! It's hilarious how he's like I stabbed her! So that proves I didn't kill her. That really stands out, and would have worked just as well in a non-tutorial case. His name is pretty good too. I wonder if he's related to Lotta Hart somewhere along the line. Tutorial cases can be pretty hit or miss, but GAA2's tutorial case is pretty solid, and he's a good deal why.

No other character in the series has persisted in being such an unpleasant, toxic, waste of the planet's oxygen reserves as Larry's dumb ass. His whole thing is to be an obnoxious womanizing loser who whenever someone calls him on his bullshit, he just screams at the top of his lungs until they change the subject. What a wonderful person.

Remember this is a guy who tried to blackmail a nun into a relationship with an anonymous letter and scared the poor thing half to death. A guy who tried to steal another man's fiancee away at their FUCKING WEDDING.

Larry probably should be institutionalized and/or put on the sex offender registry, just as a start.

All the grossly overused characters are gone now at least. There are still a few I dislike that I suspect will get very far but I just dislike them in general not because I feel they're overused.

Eh, the 2D and 3D games have a different aesthetic for obvious reasons, but Cammy is weird because she looks even more cartoonish than the others. Her eyes don't have pupils and the iris takes up 95% of her eye. Her teeth don't have lines and it's super noticeable because they're huge when she opens her mouth. It's offputting.

I'm the low for Acro. I get why people like him, but I can't.

Acro is not the worst 2-3 character but he's not much better than them. Max is the only character from 2-3 I call fine, and that's including Acro.

My top 15 is very ordinary. Just dawned on me I had Damien Tenma at #17 so we are officially to the point where I am gonna start being sad. While I sort of expected him to drop around this point, there's one character in particular that I had ranked #21 that I feel is well-regarded, but I could totally seeing him popping up any post now, and if he does, I will be beside myself.

That's all of the 2-3 specific characters out right?

Menimemo is great, far and away the best part of his case (which is a bit sad given the potential said case had). I hope Brett lasts a while, yet.

Three of my favourite one-case characters in the series (okay, Olive technically doesn't count, but c'mon) and then Acro and Larry lmao.
Menimemo's got some surprisingly valid motivations, Cammy's a bit of a guilty pleasure, but I like how she's honestly pretty capable as a culprit, amusingly petty and sassy towards Rhoda, and her animations are all really good. I've also read theories that bubble-blowing is often tied to recovering smokers, which I feel fits her character pretty well too, on top of the whole sleep bubble thing. (I also think this is why she has the big white mouth and lifeless eyes initially, all of them are to make her seem sleepy and not all there - both of these traits disappear with her 'true self' sprites after the fact). Olive Green I don't think I have to explain. An extremely tragic and real character, and in spite of all this she's pretty savage in taking the key from Shamspeare. Both deserved to be higher, and it kinda bugs me to see her below Acro, who is a very flawed idea of a sympathetic culprit when you analyze it properly.

Acro's motivations are very silly to me. Him not once considering the thought that Russell might be sad to find out that his daughter has been murdered as someone who is attempting to murder Regina in revenge of a dead family member is beyond stupid. Sweetheart, you're almost as dumb as the child you want to kill. That being said, this only bothers me because the game tries to make him a sympathetic character. Idk the more I think about him the more he annoys me. On the other hand, (GAA2) Olive is so so so much better at being sympathetic. She's a real one.

Agree with Para here, again. I was actually surprised she was so hated based on the comments of people here. Heel turns are fun and hers was memorable at least.

I put Cammy Meele on the same level as someone like Bronco Knight, just a really fun and tricky opponent who's fun to take down

Desiree is great, because at first she comes across as some type of gold digger. But then it turns out, she just likes spending money and she really loves Ron. She also really doesn't like criminals. Though that's kind of weird with all the Masque*DeMasque stuff they have at the apartment now that I think about it. She's nice, and her and Ron just make a great couple. They have a cameo in AAI2, which is pretty cool.

This ranking mostly has to do with how much I like Ron, but Desiree is a great character in her own right. It's so rare to find a relationship, whether by blood or otherwise, that is totally genuine, and it's shocking that the one that looks like a sugar daddy/gold digger dynamic is actually one that fits the bill. - MrSmartGuy

This guy has to be Damon Gant's ancestor. Don't care what they say. Just look at him! LOOK AT HIM! Mael Stronghart is the Chief Justice of the Court of Britain during Ryunosuke Naruhodo's stay in London. He's like "Sure, you can be a defense attorney, as long as you take this case nobody else is willing to take." That's all it takes. And of course that ultimately ends up being his undoing, becuase Ryutaro will see things to the end no matter what. And he of course unravels the conspiracy that Stronghart forced Klint Van Zieks into becoming the Professor, and now has turned Barok Van Zieks into the Reaper, except he has someone else do the murdering. He's kind of like Light Yagami from Death Note, only without a Death Note. He controls the final trial, but they make a good show of giving him reason to let it continue instead of him being like "Oh well, case dismissed. That's all." And he actually gets a lot of the gallery on his side. His breakdown is pretty awesome.

I have to have somewhat of a soft spot for a guy named Ashley as one myself. Originally known as Eggert Benedict, a name that would absolutely fit in Ace Attorney, so good job Ashley. He has a future in naming other Ace Attorney characters for sure. The son of Mason Milverton, and the person who murdered your first client in Britain, makes for an interesting final boss for the first GAA game. You don't really get to break him so much as you break Gregson. Which is pretty cool. How unlucky was he to have a co-worker on the juror?

The innuendo filled witness of Ace Attorney. I don't know, maybe I'm still a little juvenile, but I find April funny. Especially since she's not a good guy. Her naivety is a big part of her downfall, and it just kind of works for an early witness. She's also pretty memorable. I guess most of the OT witnesses are pretty memorable. But nobody's going to mistake April May for someone else. No, April May, everything is NOT sold in stores. Funny enough, my wife and I inadvertently named one of our daughters April. Though not after April May, obviously. (Or any other April, she was just born in April. She does have a cousin named May). She does have an Ace Attorney middle name (by choice) however.

Not a well-written character, but she plays a pivotal role in the series' first big case, and as such, she has several iconic moments. Not the least including Phoenix's two biggest burns he has in his entire fucking career, in a span of about 20 seconds. "I think it's high time you went shopping for a better excuse. Oh? The mistress of misfortune. Poor Maggey. Failed almost every test she's ever taken. It's a wonder how she became a police officer. Oh wait, the bar for that actually is super low. God dammit, Ace Attorney. She's so unlucky that even when she hires Phoenix Wright as her attorney... he turns out to be a fake. Not sure how that happened. She shouldn't blame Gumshoe or Wright for that. I kind of hope she and Gumshoe somehow ended up together. Maybe that's why we haven't seen him lately. Probably injured from being around Maggey too much.
