Peacock heading to be the most expensive

https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/peacock-price-increase-2025-1236463982/

NBCUniversal execs have believed Peacock is underpriced relative to the streamers rivals and, to that point, the company is raising rates for the third time in three years.

Starting July 23, the price for Peacock Premium (which includes ads) will increase by $3 to $10.99/month and Premium Plus (which has limited ads in live programming) by $3 to $16.99 per month. Peacocks annual price will be $109.99/year for Premium and $169.99/year for Premium Plus.

The new pricing now makes Peacock more expensive than the ad-supported and ad-free tiers at Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max and Paramount+. The higher prices will be effective July 23 for new and returning customers, and on or Aug. 22 for current customers (depending on their next billing date).

In addition to the higher pricing on those two packages, the company is beginning to test a new Peacock Select tier, which will feature NBC and Bravo current seasons and an assortment of library titles, which will be priced at $7.99/month and $79.99/year.

NBCU last increased Peacock pricing in July 2024, after hiking prices a year earlier for the first time since Peacocks 2020 launch.
Peacocks latest price increase comes off the massively popular recent season of Love Island USA (pictured above) and a strong start to Love Island: Beyond the Villa. And it comes ahead of the NBAs return to NBC (and Peacock) in the fall of 2025 after a 23-year absence on the network.

Movies coming to Peacock are set to include Jurassic World Rebirth, How to Train Your Dragon and Wicked: For Good. The platform also will have the return of The Traitors and new scripted originals like The Paper, plus programming from NBC and Bravo like Saturday Night Live, the WWE, and the Law & Order, Chicago and Real Housewives franchises.

NBCU also is touting the return of the NFLs Sunday Night Football this fall, as well as the NBA, WNBA, Premier League, Big Ten, the FIFA World Cup in Spanish and more sports. NBC also has Super Bowl LX, and next years NBA All-Star Weekend, as well as the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics and Paralympics in February 2026. All told, according to NBCU, Peacock will stream more live sports in 2026 than Amazon Prime, Paramount+, Hulu, HBO Max, Apple TV and Netflix combined.

As of the end of the first quarter of 2025, Peacock reported 41 million paid subscribers, up from 36 million at the end of 2024. Execs said the net gain was driven by its deal with Charter Communications to bundle the Peacock Premium ad-supported streaming service with the Spectrum TV Select video package.

In Q1, Peacock revenue increased 16% and the quarterly loss from operations narrowed to $215 million, compared with a loss of $639 million in the year-earlier period.

I just had my ad based one renew for $80 for the year, so I'm good until then at least. Still sucks though. Peacock and Hulu are the two I use most. Really need to drop Netflix.

Its kind of really fun to see all of these streaming services fight over stuff, when to date, the only one that has ever made a profit on it is still just Netflix. Disney and Amazon can get away wth it since they basically have infinity money right now, and with Amazon Prime Video is more just a perk associated with the Prime membership than something specific to pay for.

Like nobody did their research when making a streaming service, they just made one because it was cool at the time. Then they just constantly have to raise prices because they didn't do their research going in.

The only ones with the content base to pull that off are Hulu and Netflix tbh, and I figure it'll happen eventually while they maintain that lead. It'll either choke out all their competition or kill their platforms.

My personal conspiracy theory is that Comcast actively colluded with a bunch of major television networks to ruin streaming by having all these networks release streaming platforms that's just a duplicate of what they're already showing on cable. It ripped all the popular shows off of the existing streaming networks and fragmented things so badly that it would be legitimately cheaper to just have cable at this point than to try to subscribe to everything.

iirc, Peacock loses WWE PPV's next year I think? So they're probably trying to make bank while they can, because I wager that's going to be apocalyptic for them.

Theyre raising prices because as mentioned in this article theyve made deals for a ton of live sports

WWE will be a drop in the bucket compared to what they assume they can get from streaming NFL games

of course people who dont give a shit are also paying the price

Cable is way more expensive. For $120, I'd only get like 80 channels total and most of them I don't watch. Hulu Live TV has almost 100 channels and includes Disney plus and ESPN+ for free.

Cable isn't cheaper at all.

I find it really hard to justify MAX. They keep pulling content while increasing the price. Only one I am specifically subscribed to right now is Hulu/Disney. I also have Prime, but I keep that more for the free delivery, and Prime Video is a nice perk of that.

With how shitty streaming has been getting I am so happy that I never stopped collecting physical media and recently ripped everything and made a Plex server.

Does it have every season of the original L&O? When I was subbed years ago they only had starting at I think season 11 (whatever Briscoe's last season was) due to what I assume is a rights issue. I noticed a few months ago that Hulu randomly got every season of the original series and wondering if it's on Peacock too.

lmao that's hilarious. I'm tempted to just buy the DVDs for season 3-12 used (I just can't watch the early episodes with no Briscoe and/or McCoy) and loading it onto my server so I don't have to worry about the rights bouncing around.
