Israel intends to take control of all of Gaza, Netanyahu says ahead of security cabinet meeting

(CNN) Israels security cabinet is set to decide on a full reoccupation of Gaza, a move that would mark a major escalation of the conflict in after nearly two years of war in the territory.

In an interview with Fox News shortly before the security cabinet meeting, Netanyahu was asked whether Israel plans to take military control of all of Gaza.

We intend to, Netanyahu said. He claimed Israel is aiming to remove Hamas in Gaza, before handing the territory to civilian governance that is not Hamas, and not anyone advocating the destruction of Israel.

The phased plan under consideration would require up to five months, during which approximately a million Palestinians in Gaza City and other areas would once again be forced into evacuation areas in southern Gaza, according to an Israeli official with knowledge of the proposal. The military would establish compounds to house the massive influx of displaced Palestinians.

As part of the plan, Israel and the US would increase the number of aid distribution sites operated by the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) from the current four up to 16 sites, the official said.

On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump said it was pretty much up to Israel whether to occupy all of Gaza, effectively giving Netanyahu the green light to proceed however he wants.

No idea how they intend to fully root out Hamas other than make regions of Gaza zones where no inhabitants are allowed. Heck, maybe Israel will open up settlements in Gaza similar to the West Bank.

As for giving it back to civilian authority, I wonder who that would be (assuming Israel even intends to leave). Fatah/PLO? They have been irrelevant since the 2000 Camp David Summit failure / Second Intifada. Still, I wouldn't mind it they stepped up.

well i mean they funded hamas for years so its not like israel is running with a new plan. they need an enemy at all times to legitimize their forced military service and to keep their people angry enough to support genocide.

Honestly Israel is so close to losing their global soft power at this point. Outside America literally everybody knows this is genocide and Netanyahu's forces have looked at the Holocaust as an instruction manual rather than a warning.

There was a protest last weekend on Sydney Harbour Bridge that had an estimated 100k people attend. If you take that and expand that to the total population that means 1 in 250 Australians are so anti-Gaza occupation they are willing to protest, however it's likely closer to 1 in 80 when you take into account how only citizens of New South Wales and a small number of people from the other two Eastern States could actually feasibly attend (it was enough to actually spook the federal government, that's for sure).

I think it's rather clear the general populace in developed nations has pretty much had it with the Israeli governments bullshit at this point and that is going to heavily damage their global soft power.

Now that's not enough to stop them doing what they're doing (so long as the US keep giving them military equipment and hardware nothing will), but it does very much damage their ability to be a global player going forward. It also is another small erosion for the US's soft power as well.

Multiple Israeli Ministers have said a ton of times that there will be settlements in Gaza like there was before 2005.

I've heard as much. Looks like 20 years of "progress" (if you can call it that) is being reversed.

Kind of sad how the 2005 withdrawal went down. Within 2 years Hamas ended up taking over Gaza with Israel and Egypt putting a blockade on Gaza that has never really gone away. Things would have been better had Fatah won the legislative elections and Hamas been left in the dust, although after the Camp David Summit regrettably failed and the Second Intifada (unlike the First) left Palestinians worse off, I guess people wanted a change, although no good options were available...so they picked a "greater evil".

I can't say I like the PLO after how the Camp David Summit went down, but I don't see any other option outside whatever group Israel tries to install (proceeding presumably direct military rule).

Civilian governance is ambiguous for now.

And then the question comes up of how Hamas can even be ousted considering how imbedded they are in Gaza. I mean, almost all of Hamas's leadership has been taken out and Israel launched the offensive after the October 7, 2023 terrorist attack (almost 2 years...damn) and still Hamas is in control of much of Gaza.

I don't know. The situation looks grim.
