honestly sounds like hell. middle school is the age little kids stop being cute and start being smart asses. i guess its better then high school kids.

I taught tertiary school students and they were far more manageable. It helps a lot how you don't have to parent them anymore.

apathy might be an issue in high school, but from memory the bigger issue in mine was the complete disregard of authority. so many of my classes were filled with students that didn't let the teacher actually teach. i can think of at least 5 teacher in my 4 years in high school that quit because of how shit the student body was and how poorly the school actually handled disruptive students.

That is the one thing my older daughter hates about math - none of her female friends are in her classes. Shes taking AP Calculus AB as a junior and there are only a couple of girls in the class.

Congratulations! Middle school is a tough age, but also a very rewarding one. I teach high school now (well, technically, grades 8-12), but I started my career off teaching middle school. I thought I'd hate it but I actually miss a lot of it...

Thank you for doing this! I am a high school math teacher, and I can pretty safely say that the overwhelming majority of the challenge in teaching students is cemented by a losers' mindset in mathematics - namely, this idea that math can't be learned, or is based solely on innate talent. In reality, this may be true if you're talking about completing a graduate degree in graph theory, but the notion that learning how to add fractions or calculate taxes is something that can only be done by "math people" is a big-ass joke and a sad thing that many parents still believe.

Phones are a serious problem in high school, but you're right that apathy is probably the biggest problem. It is very hard to teach students who do not care, and I happen to work in a district where everyone is expected to learn Algebra 2. Teaching the graph of a cosine function to an apathetic student is an exercise in futility. Middle school is an age where you can still get most kids *interested* in something.

Yes, this much is true. I have to write a few that I promised I would...there are pros and cons. For high school teachers, we really do get the chance to see kids grow up into young adults. Hearing about college rejections sucks when it's a hard-working kid who deserves it, but you also get a laugh every once in a while hearing about a kid with a 1200 on the SATs who's shocked that he doesn't get into Yale.

Wow, that's a very advanced course for a junior!

It's a sad problem that we're dealing with as a country. A lot of academic research has actually found that there is a strong *NEGATIVE* correlation between gender equality and the percentage of women obtaining degrees in STEM fields - namely, that the countries with the most women studying engineering and related fields are the ones where women are treated most unequally, whereas progressive countries where women can vote and own property are much less likely to have women in STEM. It's one of those things that policymakers are still having a hard time figuring out.
