Highschool in a suburb of NYC. I remember it very clearly. Lots of kids had parents that worked in the buildings or for NYPD or whatever.

I got up for high school. I got my cereal and milk. Turned on the TV. Flipped the channels and ended up on CNN. Saw there were some breaking news that a tower was hit. Thought that was crazy.

I then went to school. There were murmurs between some students in class. "We're going to war! Did you hear? They're going into defcon 3." Then the teacher pulled out a tv and we watched the news. We did pretty much that throughout the day and they sent us home early as well.

A week later we had a school assembly and watched some tribute and memorial videos of the event. I remember some girls were crying.

Oh yeah, and when we were waiting for the busses to go home, there was this girl with the hugest you-know-what I've ever seen (at the time). It almost made me forget about the planes.

It was different for me over some. At the time, I was in 7th grade when I lived in California. I remember waking up slightly early that day (I can't remember the exact time, but I think the second tower had been hit at that point) and hearing the TV from the living room. I saw my mom watching and talking with a friend on the phone who lived in NY. I felt like the experience was different due to being in the Pacific Time Zone while my wife was in 9th grade and found out as it was happening since she was already at school due to being in the Eastern Time Zone.

Was in college. Got woken up by a call from my mom telling me to turn on the TV. Both towers had already been hit, but were still up.

Pretty much was glued to the TV all day. All classes were canceled except for one because the professor wanted everyone to talk about their feelings. I went, but wanted to be back at the TV instead of there.

At the time, I was a software developer in my first failed dot-com. At that point, they were flying me between DC and Newport Beach, CA. I had just flown an American Airlines red-eye from DCA to LAX the night before, and woke up to the news. It took me a few days before I could reach my parents in NJ, due to phone line disruption. A week later, I had to fly back to BWI, since DCA was still closed.

When I got back to DC, I remember the distinctive skateboard-like sound of fighter jets patrolling high overhead, unlike the commercial aircraft I'd usually hear.

About five years prior, In college, I interviewed at two financial companies at WTC (Banker's Trust and Salmon Brothers), and even stayed at the WTC hotel during interviews. In an alternate universe, I took one of those jobs, and might have only been saved by my then-inability to wake up early.

I was in a tall dorm at college - over 20 stories. My mom was insistent that I needed to get out because we might be the next target. I had to try to reason with her that the terrorists plan of attack wasnt the World Trade Center, then the Pentagon, then my dorm.

Some four star general probably told his mom that the terrorists plan of attack wasnt the World Trade Center, his office at the Pentagon, then some schmoes dorm room.

Was in middle school, but yeah, same here. Fucking scary.

Teachers were all quiet about it (how the hell do you break this news?), but you could tell some shit had happened. The teachers did their best to get through the day, and then we all went home and found out what happened. For some kids it was horrifying - their parents worked in the area. One teacher had a husband who worked in the WTC and she obviously wasn't at work for a few days - luckily he ended up making his way back home over the course of a few days - it was impossible to get out of Manhattan so folks hitchhiked, walked, and did who knows what else to make it back home.

I was in bed and saw it when I woke up and turned on the TV. Every channel had "RED ALERT AMERICA UNDER ATTACK" or something along those lines at the bottom of the screen. I legit thought we were being invaded.

My mom called me from work and sounded like she was crying, telling me not to go anywhere and her job is being evacuated. Then all the local schools were evacuated. I watched the second plane hit and both towers fall as it happened.

I work nights, and I had just finished watching WWF Raw, decided to play some Perfect Dark before bed. Except my TV didn't have video in, I had to run my N64 into my VCR, then turn to channel 2 and go backwards to select the VCR video in. Turn to channel 2 (the local CBS affiliate) and there's one of the towers on fire. I vividly remember the newscasters wondering just how a plane could not realize they were heading toward a skyscraper, and right then, the second tower was hit. Talk about an oh shit moment.

I was in my sophomore year of high school, and was in study hall when the news of the first plane hitting was being talked about. We all assumed it was an accident, and then the second plane hit towards the end of study hall, and speculation was running wild during English class. Me and my buddy tried to get on the internet on the one computer we had in English, while our teacher sat silently, and most of the other students were just quietly whispering to each other. We couldnt get on the net though, as web traffic made it impossible to load anything.
