It's always funny to me that most of the same people who say that "political violence is never ok" is also the same people who don't even raise an eyebrow when the government is out commiting violence as if those two things aren't one and the same.

Political violence happens all the time. We just don't think it's bad because Big Brother is the one doing it and we have legitimized it. A lone gunmen kills a political commentator that supports totalitarian regime is a tragedy. Thousands are dragged into concentration camps, separated from their family and never given due process before being disappeared out of the country? That's a statistic.

Reminds me of the Joker quote from The Dark Knight "Nobody panics when things go according to plan. Even if the plan is horrifying"

And to those who abhor both... at what point are the people actively promoting violence and not just doing the violence, become fair targets? I think about that radio personality during the Rwandan genocide who did so much to egg on the forces of that horror

This "tragedy" reminds me of that moment in the first Joker movie where some poor person died and the media didn't give a shit, but when Joker killed those rich assholes, suddenly the media was covering it and treating the loss like it was something big.

It just hit me that the last thing Charlie said was an attempt to downplay school shootings.

He was shot at a university, and probably not to a gang member.

It's a cruel irony, and a cruel reminder of the reality people go through. If Kirk was one of the students at that university, the media would already be bored of the story. The usual suspects would already be telling us that this tragedy is a small price to pay so they can keep their guns.

Kirk became the very statistic he likely argued against in the past.

Do we, as a nation, care about the violence going on in our schools now?

The media is making this man into a saint when in reality he was just a doofus who lucked into finding an audience with young men. All of his talking points are now being used when black crime is shown. His legacy is one of hate and I dont blame anyone if they dont feel bad hes dead.

Republicans control the House, Senate, Presidency, and Supreme Court. If they didnt do this would this anger their base in the elections that are coming up in a couple months.

Makes me wonder if the shooter planned to do it around a gun control/school shooting debate. I havent really seen the full Kirk speech so no idea what he talked about before it. The recordings and discussion on this seem to be mainly the death video and that section.

I am finding the attempted lionization and washing of what Charlie was to be very disturbing. The media is even pushing it like he was some grand figure cruelly cut down in his prime. I've seen almost no discussion of his racism, his bigotry, the people he called friends and allies...this is troubling.

As disturbing as it is, it's also not at all surprising to me.

Any updates on the shooter? I tried googling and saw no info on an identity. I thought the cops had pic of Luigi after he did that shooting within 24 hours.

It's really frustrating to see it framed as he was killed because he used free speech.

1. We don't know why he was killed
2. WHILE and BECAUSE are two different things. The likely thing is Kirk was killed because he engaged in political violence in advancing policies aimed at inflicting maximum harm against a plethora of minorities

If there was anything good to come out of the average American having a goldfish memory, it's that Charlie Kirk will be forgotten. Even right wingers will forget once the next hateful grifter takes his place.

I do think people (mostly conservatives) saying this will like transform society or politics or whatever are fooling themselves. At the end of the day this is waaaay bigger of a loss than a gain for the conservative movement.

People really overrate how important it was that he was "calm and patient" in all those college debate videos.

You can be the most unflustered, soft spoken person ever and still be capable of saying horrible, bigoted bullshit.
