I have a friend who gets laughably pissed if we play a fighting game and he loses, including shouting in rage and slamming the controller down. Another friend won't react nearly that dramatically but they'll start acting like a downer if they lose in Mario Kart. I get that Mario Kart is cheap as hell with blue shells, but that's why I don't take it too seriously in the first place and am just there to have some fun with a friend.

Is this kind of reaction annoying as fuck to anyone else? I think cheap single-player mechanics or online play can be different but if I get my ass kicked by someone I'm spending time with then I'm laughing about it, making a joke about how they cheated, etc.

Raging during online play or single-player is kind of fun because success at the game is my primary focus and it's cathartic to shout a curse word into the void at nobody. But with a friend next to you, it's just awkward and a bad look IMO.

This but it depends a bit on my skill level at the game. I don't mind losing in a fighting game or a sports game I've barely played. But a game like Everybody's Golf (2017) that I have 10000 hours on, I get a little more salty

I've been going back and forth between thinking it's not a big deal vs it's rude and I'm settling on the latter. Part of my issue is not knowing wtf to say in response and it feels like the burden is on me to cheer them up, which is not a factor online. When friends are at someone's house there's a certain host-guest etiquette dynamic going on and the priority should be having a good time with company.

Lol, what goes on with your board game sessions? We had to stop playing a competitive card game (Netrunner) because said friend would also rage react when losing at that. Board games have gone well, though. It stings less when you lose because of a random dice roll vs a deck-building card game.

Local multiplayer means I'm playing with friends or family (and likely drinking), so I don't care about W/L and just want everyone to have a good time

Online multiplayer I get annoyed sometimes but then remember I'm 37 and it's a game

No. If I'm playing locally it's with people I don't mind beating me. Either family, or kids. Plus, it's fun regardless.

Now, I do have a cousin that lives with me and he was a sore winner. If he won, he'd do nothing but insult and trash talk. Not in joking way, like personal insults, and that really bothered me. I used to go easy on him a bit, but I stopped and he'd get absolutely furious if he lost. So either way, you'd end up being insulted. So I just stopped playing with him.

Being a downer after losing is not something I would personally do but is at least understandable

On the other hand, if someone was shouting angry and slamming their controller I would probably just never play local multiplayer games with them anymore

I genuinely don't care if I lose or win when playing with a friend or family. The kinds of games we would play, we would just be laughing the whole time, like Mario Party, Mario Kart, or some generic fighter. Me and my friend played the My Hero Academia fighting game multiplayer and it was hilarious cause we both suck at fighting games, so we just latch onto whatever character we like and find the most spammable move.

In general no. If it's with friends and family I don't really care about winning or losing. But I do care about fun, and sometimes a friend will decide to play in a distinctly unfun way. Like in certain board games they might start self-sabotaging or trolling the board the moment they realize they can no longer win, or in video games maybe they start ganging up on other players to knock out competitions so they can survive longer. Depending on general attitude and the group it can get real old real fast, and then I might start getting upset.

Generally no. The closest was while playing a board game called Letters from Whitechapel. It's a game where one player (in this case me) is playing as Jack the Ripper going around committing murders while the other players are police trying to track you down. They have pieces on the board that they move, but the person playing as Jack just writes their movement down on a piece of paper (to keep track of it and so it can be verified afterwards if necessary), so during the game they only know where you are when a murder is committed.

So during the game in question I was basically running circles around them, and was close to victory, and one turn one of the other players was certain where I was, but it was a spot I mathematically could not have been based on where my last murder had been committed and how little time had passed since. But he was so certain about it that he assumed he must have just been off by one or two spaces, so on the next turn he choose a spot based on that assumption which was mathematically impossible, however because I had assumed he would have realized his mistake, I had actually gone to a spot that I could have also gone to from where he mistakenly thought I was, and he managed to catch me.

I wasn't mad after that, but it was a bit anti-climatic to me that I had lost because of an assumption that happened to be correct but which was based on a previous assumption that couldn't have been correct. Pretty sure I said something like, "What?! How?! No! Dammit..."

Same here. I would much rather lose a close match than completely dominate somebody else.

Only time I ever sent a message online was thanking somebody for dumbing down their playstyle so I felt like I had a chance. He wanted to know how I knew. Told him I used to do the same thing back in the day when I was halfway decent at fighting games in the early 90's.
