The second movie is more tonally similar, but a lot more of a personal and slow moving story. The third movie starts to show Freddy in the comedic light that later sequels overdo, but still keep his intimidating aura. There are objectively better horror movies, obviously, but I personally love the themes of Nightmare, and Im a sucker for stories that blur the line between illusion/dreams and reality, which the first one does extremely well. Robert Englund also knocks his performance out of the park, along with Heather Langenkamp, who is my favorite of the final girls in slasher films. She is ultra resourceful, while still being believable, and takes the fight directly to Freddy at the end. Freddy is so charismatic that we guiltily love and root for him, even though he is an unrepentant child killer, and truthfully a pedo, which they cut the direct lines about that out from the OG film due to a scandal going on at the time in California, but it is still obvious to anyone paying attention to the subtext, especially in the later films (and I dont mean the remake, where they say it outright). It takes quite a performance to make a character like that likable, in a twisted, black humor type of way, but Englund pulls it off in spades. You also have to give Craven and the crew of the film big props making that movie work as well as it does on the shoe string budget they were working with, and they werent doing basic kills like Friday the 13th and Halloween. If you don't like watching violence, that's one thing, but not all movie violence is Torture Porn. People still get killed on screen, yes, but both the approach and overall appeal are pretty different.
